Episode 315
Left Behind

It’s flashbacks like these that almost make me appreciate Jack’s tattoo flashback. Let’s face it, Kate’s back story ran its course last season, and what a disappointment it turned out to be.

As much as I disliked her, I always thought her story was so intriguing; that is, until we got to see all of it and I realized it wasn’t quite as spectacular as I’d hoping it would be. I really hope we don’t get any more Kate flashbacks. I’d be willing to make an exception if Captain Mal appears in it though.

Well, back on the island, Kate has finally met her match. And I wouldn’t even call Juliet her match, as I think that it’s laughable that Kate thinks that she can take Juliet on. But yes, I know what you are all going to say… Kate dislocated Juliet’s shoulder. Lucky break, as far as I am concerned.

Anyway, before my Kate-hate gets the better of me, let’s get on with the story. While handcuffed to each other and left alone in the middle of the jungle Kate and Juliet encounter the monster. The first time it flashes light in their faces while they cower between a thicket of trees.

What interests me here is that Locke implies that he has seen the monster and he saw light. Could this be what he’s seen? What confuses me, however, is why can’t the monster penetrate the thicket of trees? It’s a cloud of smoke right? Or something similar, anyway. Surely, if it can form a cloud fist, it can weave between trees?

The second time they encounter the monster is just as interesting. We learn a few interesting things at this point. The first is that Juliet has had the key to the cuffs all the time!!! Her reasoning was that if Kate found her handcuffed to Juliet, Kate would be more accepting of her if she thought that Juliet had been left behind as well. Huh? I must admit that up until that point, I really did think that Juliet had been left behind.

Now, I am not so sure. This could be interpreted in three ways:
1. They left Juliet behind just as she says and this all really was a ploy on Juliet’s part to be accepted
2. The Others orchestrated this whole thing in order to infiltrate the losties camp and get one of their own in the camp
3. Or, as Juliet infers… it’s all a part of Benry’s mind games... to further gain control of Jack. Because, let’s face it, the losties are not going to be jumping for joy when Juliet goes back to camp with them.

My take on it varies between option 1 and 3, and leaning more towards option 3. I don’t think that it’s beneath Benry to do something like this, and I am not entirely convinced of exactly where Juliet’s loyalties lie.

Anyway, the 2nd thing of interest is that the Others are aware of the monster. Apparently, they know about it, but not what it is. Juliet here again proved herself a capable liar as she initially said she didn’t know anything about the monster. I’m wondering if the fence with its weird properties were more to protect the Others from the monster than from anyone who could wander across it.

Anyway, before we move on to other island happenings, Juliet also informs Kate that she broke Jack’s heart. So, when they eventually get to Otherville, Kate snivelingly apologizes to Jack, but Jack is having none of it, and asks about…. Juliet. Ha Ha Ha!

Locke… I am running out of words to describe what I think of him. Traitor comes to mind though. Has he joined up with the Others now? He wasn’t cuffed, and seemed to be leaving of his own free will. In his most condescending statement yet, he tells Kate that he made a case for her.

Honestly! Locke has gotten very condescending when it comes to the island and believes that he (and maybe he alone) deserves everything that the island offers. He even went as far as to imply that Benry was not deserving of the island’s magic when he wasn’t getting healed.

Ooh, before I go on to the other end of the island, isn’t Sayid just incredible? He checks out the camp and has the situation all sussed out by the time Jack regains use of legs.

Meanwhile, on the other end of the island, Hurley has more character growth when he conned Sawyer into believing that he (Sawyer) would be banished from camp. I’m really impressed with Hurley. In season 1 most especially, he didn’t seem to be integral to the camp. He’s emerging as a young man with a good head on his shoulders. I think he’d make a good camp leader.

As we start winding down towards the season finale in approximately 2 months, one has to wonder what is in store for us. Each episode is so full of twists and turns that it’s becoming impossible to even try and theorise anymore. Not that any of my theories have ever been right, by the way. I can’t wait to see what happens when Kate, Sayid and Jack waltz into camp with Juliet next week.

New Mysteries

• Where did the Others go to? Back to the other island or do they have Otherville 2 elsewhere on the island?
• Has Locke joined up with the Others
• Will the Losties move into Otherville? I would petition for it…running water, electricity… it’s like an island paradise there.
• Can Juliet be trusted?

What we learnt this week

• Kate encountered Cassidy while Cassidy was pregnant with Sawyer’s child
• The Others know about the monster

Interesting Trivia

• The game room where Kate was held contained the game Mouse Trap - Locke stated this was his favourite game as a child.
• In the season 2 episode "Lockdown," the word "Cerberus" was written on the map that appeared on the blast door. Cerberus is the three headed dog that guards the underworld and is thought by many fans to be the name of the smoke monster. When it hits the sonic fence, the smoke morphs into what looks like three separate heads stemming from a tail.

• The book Claire is reading is called Rick Romer's Vision of Astrology. Rick Romer is also Lost's set-decorator.
