Season 4

Jam Sandwich, which started off as a late night signature show in 2008, has become a major mainstream sensation, regularly breaking records for audience ratings for that particular time slot.

It also boasts three SAFTAS in three different categories: Best Music Show, Best Reality Television and Best Concept and Script.

The premise of the show – two musicians from different musical genres who get together for three days to write, rehearse and record a song together - stays mainly unchanged, with a few minor tweaks to the format.

The one major difference is the addition of a new producer every week. The role that the producer plays has been extended over the past season. Producers used include Nutty Nys, DJ Stethoscope, Peter Pearlson, Marius Brouwer and a variety of others.

Increasingly, the producer seems to be the point of conflict as pressure and stress due to time constraints start playing a role.

Due to the success of the show and the popularity amongst both musicians and audiences alike, more and more big name artists are requesting to be on the show.

This has allowed the producers to create more interesting collaboration without compromising the basic premise of the show – showcasing the similarities and differences in South Africa's very wide musical range.

The programme's Facebook and Twitter following is also very active in the opinions it expresses about the artists and the show, making it hugely interactive and giving both broadcaster and manufacturer a direct link to the people who have made the show such a huge success.

Quite a few of the collaborations have continued working together after being on the show.

Participants in the new season include Robbie Malinga, Maleh, Claire Johnston, Arno Carstens, Black Motion, Soweto Gospel Choir, Brian Temba, Bongeziwe Mabandla, Mfiliseni Magubane, L'vovo, Die Campbells and many more.

Jam Sandwich is a joint venture between Meerkat Media and Mahala Empowerment Media. Meerkat Media is co-owned by music industry expert, Deon Maas.

The producer is Pauli van Dyk and Michael Lee is the director. Sibusiso Molefe of Publicity Stunt is the Associate Producer.
