Season 2

Filmed in the heart of Cape Town's District 6 and documenting life inside Charly's Bakery the 13-part second season was produced by Cooked in Africa Films over a period of 12 months from April 2012.

Since Charly's Cake Angels launched in 2012, Season 1 has been shown in more than 100 territories in Europe, Middle East and Africa, including Asia, the UK and Ireland.

Season 2 made its worldwide debut on DStv's Food Network channel in September 2013.

Founded 25 years ago by Charly and Jacqui Biess, the new season opens with the tragic news of Charly's death from cancer in May 2012, with Jacqui and daughters Alex, Dani and Roch having to deal with their loss while struggling to meet the increasing demands from new customers and eager fans.

"Since launching Charly's Cake Angels Season 1," says Jacqui, "we've received literally thousands of emails from people from all over the world and counted nine-hour queues stretching out the bakery door and into the parking lot.

"While fame hasn't changed us, it's certainly made us appreciate the goodwill and care that comes from the people around us. The appeal of this season goes beyond creating bigger and bolder cakes. We venture further outside of the bakery and into the heart of local communities and families in need, where we find a way of celebrating life in all its diversity."

Beyond the unrelenting orders and decadent cake decorations, Season 2 celebrates the sense of community, supporting relationships and random acts of kindness that have helped to turn Charly's Bakery into a surprising tourist hot spot and wedding cake mecca for fans from all over the world.

Filmed in the wake of the announcement of Cape Town as the 2014 Design Capital of the World, the Angels prove their reputation as one of the City's most treasured creative gems as they deliver on the weird, wonderful and sometimes whacky cake orders that come streaming into the bakery daily.

In the premiere episode of Season 2: it's been six months since Jacqui, Alex, Dani and Roch had cameras swarming around them in Cape Town's favourite bakery and a lot has happened.

Since Charly's death - and with Jacqui needing some much-needed time-out - Alex, Dani and Roch have taken over the reins and most of the operational responsibilities of the business.

With their popularity soaring and the bakery doors bursting at the seams, the girls have hired extra staff to help them cope with the endless cake orders, fan mail and job applications from hopeful bakers and fans desperate to be part of the action.

Each 26-minute episode is themed, from "Roch & Charles' Big Adventure" episode where Roch makes her own five-tiered wedding cake and walks down the aisle with her fiancé Charles; to the spectacular three-tier circus cake, 3D Lego cake and risqué 50 Shades of Grey themed cake in "It's Going to be Spooktacular" Halloween episode.

The heart warming "The Best Feeling in the World" episode sees the Angels celebrating Christmas by collecting 8500 toys for kids at the Red Cross Children's Hospital.

This act of kindness is no easy task, but the Queen of Hearts manages to fill an entire room in the bakery with toys just in time for Christmas.

The Angels

Jacqui Biess

Jacqui, the dynamic owner of the bakery, is the wacky wife of the elusive and retired Charly. She's warm-hearted and wedding crazy. She's a proud mother, whose daughters, Alex and Dani, and adopted daughter Roche, all work at the madcap bakery with her.

Alex Biess

Oldest daughter of Jacqui and Charly, Alex is a workaholic dynamo, who manages the bakery with aplomb. She's creative, witty and weathers the bakery storms with a shrug and the proverbial dance in the rain.

Dani Biess

Youngest daughter of Jacqui and Charly, Dani is the big-hearted ninja-bread girl. She's a whiz with words and cupcakes, loves mucking-in and is a devilishly talented and foxy cake decorator.

Roche Riva Schollij

The adopted daughter of Jacqui and Charly and sister of Alex and Dani, Roche is the one who feeds everyone and keeps them all sane – a job at the bakery, which can't be underrated. She's the fairy godmother of big hugs and warmth.

Frances Bell

The backbone of the bakery, Frances heads up the shape-cake section of the bakery. She's wonderful, hardworking and creates the most astonishing cakes. With a background in cake decorating, she's a purist who's learnt (with raised eyebrows) to bend the rules to create the screwball Charly's Bakery style cakes.
