I always complain about some of the programming on SABC 1 but I really think SABC 1 has out done itself when it comes to funding and producing some very cool and innovative local programmes.
Last night I was watching Head Wrap and I was totally blown away. On the show they had an afrikaans kid ,who specialises in stop-animation and a Venda Mama who specialises in clay and pottery work. Their story was such a joy to watch, the two overcoming language barriers, the interaction between the two from very different worlds that was actually positve and rewarding for both and the merger of both art forms.
The cherry on top was their final outcome of a clay animated short done through stop animation. It was both visually stunning and creativily well excuted. It was one of the best episodes i've ever seen on tv.Plus the show is shot well and edited nicely,it made me feel very proud.
then theres the Yo-tv set up. I believe SABC 's1 yo-tv-room or wild room or whatever they call it now is probably the best watched kids - teen programming in the country. The energy and innovation on the show beats the Ktv and the craze brands hands down.
Once in a while when im bumming around the house,i actually get entartained by the show although im way out of the target market. Plus they keep reinventing it by getting fresh blood almost on a yearly basis.which is cool.
SABC 1 support for local dramas is unmatched by any of the sister channels, the ugly step sister etv and even mnet in my humble opinion. From the four part mini-serieses that brought us Society, After 9 and Chisa to the Shakespeare in Mzansi. I dont think any of the other local stations have funded as much local drama as SABC 1 has done for the past two years alone. Which i think is really cool.
Then theres the local doccies and short films that SABC 1 has continued to screen, year in and year out. Although a case could be made they are not always new and fresh but at least they try to screen more of our own produced doccies and shorts which i think they have to complimented on.
Although there are still alot of things wrong with the SABC in general and SABC 1 by default, for me theres a lot of positives that if SABC 1 builds on and improves on.It can be a better and more note worthy channel, but i believe their on the right track. They are truely Mzansi story tellers
