How London Was Built is a British documentary series which traces the history of a group of London landmarks, showing how those buildings were constructed and how they changed life for Londoners.

The series premiered in the UK on ITV on 19 July, 2005. It airs in South Africa on DStv's The History Channel.

Synopsis

Adam Hart-Davis brings his own inimitable presenting style to this eye opening guided tour of some of London's most important structures.

Each episode will trace the history of a group of London landmarks, showing how those buildings were constructed and how they changed life for Londoners.

Season 3 Synopsis

Adam Hart-Davis is back with a third season exploring the fascinating story of the construction of London.

In this new season, we learn about the history of some of London’s most famous landmarks, including the Tower of London, the Royal Opera House and Wembley Stadium.

We also look at how war, the economy and globalisation have changed the city.

Episodes

Justice and Death (5 March)
Presenter Adam Hart-Davis looks at some of London's most infamous jails and finds out how Londoners have dealt with illness and death across the centuries.

Music and Letters (12 March)
Adam gets vocal at the Royal Opera House, visits the only building in England on the world list of endangered buildings and makes his own paper.

The City and Housing (19 March)
Adam visits the city of London and discovers how ancient customs and buildings sit side by side with hi-tech banking institutions. He also visits the site of a Roman amphitheatre that once hosted gladiatorial combats and discovers a huge and seemingly unsupported staircase in the Bank of England.

Docks and Sports (26 March)
Adam visits London’s docks and looks at how the city’s seafaring traditions and trade links helped turn it into the world capital it is today. He also visits some of London’s top sporting venues, from Wembley stadium to Lords. He finds out about the ancient art of cricket bat making and uncovers the origins of tennis.
