About the Show

Eddie Izzard: Circle is a British standup comedy special produced by Ella Communications Ltd. and Line by Line Productions which was filmed at the Belasco Theatre in New York City in 2000 as part of Izzard's tour of the same name in which the main theme of the show is religion.

The special was released on VHS and DVD in the United Kingdom on 18 November, 2002. It is 82 minutes long.

Eddie Izzard: Circle aired in South Africa on DStv's Comedy Central channel on Thursday 6 June 2013, at 20h55.

Synopsis

In October 1999, Eddie began performing his 6th stand-up show, Circle, throughout the UK, Scotland, Ireland and 13 performances in French in Paris, during which Eddie found the time to make a return trip to London in support for Keith Vaz, the then Minister for Europe. He then returned to London for 5 performances at the Brixton Academy in December.

The show opens with Eddie descending from the petals of a giant indigo rose and is an evening in which he moves back and forth in time, with religion as the loose but constant theme.

He begins with Pope John Paul II, then criss-crosses to Pius XII, the Spanish Inquisition, the Crusades and Jerusalem, the world's five major religions, the Dark Ages, Jesus and the future.

Along the way, Izzard makes observations about guns and monkeys, the World Series, the NRA and the IRA, mad cows, Socrates, the Stoned Olympics, the Roman Empire, the Renaissance, and the Mona Lisa.

Izzard wears black nylons, black leather pants, a black jacket and a diamond necklace.
