Women's Day Special!
Since I caught the
very first episode of the re-invented
Battlestar Galactica (BSG) I've been a sci-fi addict: any new sci-fi series that comes out now I have to see and know about - in detail. As if it's someone I'm perving and want to know them
more.
My reasons: the storylines are always so universal and timeless they really set you free to explore the meaning of life - without having to worry when you have no clue what it is. No-one in any series has ever figured it out.
Much more importantly though, I'm always finished for the lead chicki'poo characters. I've had a girlcrush on every lead girl in all the shows I've been hooked on - not a word of a lie.
On TV it started with Starbuck on BSG, played by
Katee Sackhoff - who re-invented the role played by Dirk Benedict in the original cheesy, 1D series.
Who would you rather get dirrrty with?
In contrast to him she's so much stronger and more handsome - I always enjoy imagining him cringing at himself when he's watching her.
First crushes at the movies: Angela Bassett in Strange Days and Linda Hamilton in Terminator.
I'm convinced these are three ringleader poster-girls for the babedom revolution that's resulted in sci-fi. A trend that's ever-increasing and taking over the world in yaydom - to the point that the Sci-Fi channel has even gone so far as to change it's name to reflect the shift.
Originally written "Sci-Fi" the channel changed it's name to "SyFy" last year. There were all sorts of logistical reasons for it but word is, one aspect is that adding the "y"s softens the original title to embrace feminity.
As for the channel itself and it's accessibility to us - it used to be on DStv and then got whacked. The cool news is it may be returning in the not-too-distant future.
It belongs to Universal Networks, who own five different channels - including Universal Channel on DStv. A Universal insider
spilt that they'll definitely be introducing another channel on DStv later this year - so it's very possible it'll be SyFy.
In the meantime there are lots of shows to sink your girl-perve into. The new re-invented
V premiered on M-Net Action recently and embraces women's lib completely through two hardcore's:
Erica.
FBI agent drawn into the dark world of the truth about the alien's who've arrived. One of only a handful of people who see the world the same way.
Instigator of a revolution.
Played by
Elizabeth Mitchell: Juliet on
Lost.
VS
Anna.
Whose "Do" reveals the truth a.k.a she's an alien nutjob, who needs to chillax.
With huge power.
Which she can use for good or whack.
Played by
Morena Baccarin.
Also on M-Net Action currently:
Caprica - the prequel to Battlestar Galactica. It is a self-contained story but if you haven't seen BSG it doesn't have quite the same impact unfort.
Still, it's worth catching to see the rad aspects in it, specifically - seductive cyber-technology, virtual reality,
Esai Morales and Zoe Graystone:
My advice if you haven't seen BSG yet: get it on DVD, then see Caprica. PS: If you're watching on DStv - a headsup that it goes on hiatus soon (from 10 August) and returns next year. Both series split seasons like this by a year.
Also, coming up:
Terminator - The Sarah Connor Chronicles. It's been on M-Net and M-Net Action and premieres on SABC3 this Monday (9 August) at 22h15. It airs Mondays to Thursdays at the same time, with back-to-seasons - Season 2 starts immediately after 1 ends.
The story picks up from the Terminator movies, with Linda Hamilton's new version at the centre of the action:
I was very iffy when I first heard she'd be playing Sarah - concerned that she could never deliver the same arm muscle-hustle as Linda but she's made it work for her - espesh because she doesn't try to be Linda, rather herself.
With her, holding the torch for chickdom is:
Summer Glau as Cameron Phillips.
A Terminator sent to protect John Connor with her hottness.
She can also terminate.
Bigtime.
Other cool sci-fi shows filled with max girl power:
Dollhouse (recently on M-Net Action),
Blade (was on M-Net Action and didn't get nearly enough hype),
Alias (on SABC1 and TopTV's Fox Entertainment), Haven (brand new - not confirmed on any channel yet) and
Fringe (Season 2: currently on M-Net Series).
