Compassion fatigue occurs when something that used to shock or revolt you becomes ordinary to the point of mundane. There is only so much dreadful information your brain can take before it orders your eyes to look elsewhere.
Drawing a very vague parallel, is there such a thing as celeb fatigue?
The constant preoccupation of the media, tabloid or otherwise, with celebs sometimes has the effect of not fuelling curiosity but rather causing a “Ho hum, tell me something I don’t know” response.
Take the cast of Desperate Housewives for example. With truckloads of ego being flown in especially for Oprah to fawn over, if you’re not a fan of Teri Hatcher, Eva Langoria, Marcia Cross, Nicolette Sheridan or Felicity Huffman then I strongly suggest you give this particular Oprah (SABC3, 4pm) a miss.
If this show doesn’t induce or contribute to a current case of celeb fatigue then I’m not sure what will.
Not that I have anything against the ladies per se, it’s just frightening that I know so much about them without even trying. Articles in the tabloids abound about how “former has-been” Hatcher is getting her groove on with this guy or that, how fantastic Langoria’s sex life is with her boy toy, or even how, gasp, Cross is not in fact a lesbian – she was actually gearing up to her recent wedding. Sheridan and Huffman also receive their fair share of coverage, the former for her relationship with Michael Bolton and the latter for an acclaimed performance as a transsexual.
How annoying – and slightly embarrassing – it is that I know all this.
I blame a serious case of celeb fatigue.
