Okay.
So am I the only one who's realised that cartoons are no longer the bastions of escapism they used to be? Somewhere (and I have a sneaking suspicion it started with He-Man) the primary focus of cartoons morphed from entertainment to marketing tool. These days it seems all manner of nebulous tripe passes for animated entertainment: YuGiOh, Pokemon et-frickin-cetra!
What happened to the classics? Even the old paragons of yore have succumbed to the evil that is the marketing tie-in. Road-runner action figures, Pepe le Pew key-rings, Daffy Duck car mats, Tasmanian Devil feminine hygiene products!
Et tu Bugs? Et tu?
These days intelligent entertaining cartoons are the exception rather than the rule.
For every 4 clones of the Powerpuff Girls, there's one Animaniacs - with witty relevant commentary.
Don't get me wrong. I'm not asking for high-brow "Animation Art" - just quality.
And that means none of this bollocksy single frame no movement cop-out BS they've been serving on Cartoon Network. And no more badly dubbed Gallic offshoots of once-decent cartoons. And enough with the "Jr" series... "A pup named Scooby Doo" - such potential for greatness, massacred by a quick Scrappy Doo cop-out.
Is there hope? Are our kids doomed to be subjected to the marketing machine at it most diabolical? Stay tuned to find out?
