The quest to find Mzansi's next Idol begins when Season 17 premieres, promising drama, fashion, tears, triumphs and unforgettable moments.

The show retains ProVerb as host this season, accompanied by returning judges Unathi, Somizi and Randall Abrahams.

Kwaito artist, producer and musical director Zwai Bala and singer, producer and EFF grandee Ringo Madlingozi are among the guest judges this season.

This season attracted 15,000 online entrants and the season begins with the airing of these auditions.

The season's theme is "Reuniting Mzansi" and all auditions were held online to adhere to COVID-19 safety regulations.

Nineteen-year-old Emalahleni-born singer Zama Khumalo won last year's edition of the competition dubbed "Sweet Sixteen".

In the Season 17 premiere: It's the job of host ProVerb along with judges Unathi, Randall and Somizi - and guest judge Prince KB - to begin the search for the next big star in the SA music scene.

Actress Cheryl Hines and daytime host Adrienne Bailon-Houghton join host Ken Jeong, a rotating panel of celebrity detectives comprised of comedians and pop culture experts, and a musical superstar to help one contestant tell the difference between good and bad singers, without ever hearing them sing a note.

With $100,000 on the line, the contestant will attempt to weed out the bad "Secret Voices" from the good, based on a series of clues, interrogation and lip synch challenges.

In the end, the singer whom the contestant picks will reveal if they are good or bad in a duet performance with the musical superstar, resulting in an amazing musical collaboration or a totally hilarious train wreck.

The guest panellists in the series premiere are Aen Jeongl and Kelly Osborne, and the "musical superstar" is Nick Lachey.
