SABC3 isn't the only channel to
undergo a schedule overhaul in July. SABC2 will be going through one too, with changes to the daytime and primetime schedule.
According to the SABC, the changes have been introduced to "increase local content on the public broadcaster's platforms" but only one international show has been canned: Dr Phil.
The other changes don't embrace the local content quota but are rather a reshuffling of South African shows, with a specific focus on primetime between 18h00 and 20h00.
The most notable and mindboggling change is that 7de Laan has been moved from 18h30 to 19h00, which means that the SABC has placed two of the broadcaster's signature family soapies in direct competition with each other -
and both have to compete against a third soapie.
Instead of strengthening local content, this does the opposite. It dilutes and damages the landscape by forcing viewers to choose between 7de Laan, Isidingo and
e.tv's popular Rhythm City.
Isidingo has faced an extremely tough ratings battle against Rhythm City since it moved to 19h00 and now the battle will be even tougher.
As you'll see from the schedule below, the move doesn't increase the local content quota, it's simply a reshuffle.
