I don't like to debate matters relating to Generations, because it feels very much like debating matters of the ANC - If you oppose it, then you'll never hear the end of it. And like politics, we've heard it all before.
But, I have to get this off my chest...
A while back, I started losing interest in the storyline of Generations and didn't understand the direction it was taking, so I stopped watching... to quit moaning and talking about how bad it was.
My Generationless life was good, until I found myself back at home by 8pm. I'd be watching any other program or movie but come 8pm I'm forced to change to SABC 1. For what??? Generations of course... because it's the tradition to watch it.
A couple of years ago we were enjoying our December holidays by the beach at Amanzimtoti. With all the braais, parties and socialising, 1 of our friends had set an alarm for 19:55 for every weekday to go back to the hotel room. For what??? She said she HAD to watch Generations.
We are in Swaziland, getting ready to go out clubbing and leave at 8pm. Oh, no, we have to leave at 8:30pm. For what??? Because someone needs to watch Generations. Mind you there's an omnibus on Saturday but somehow, we still "HAVE TO" wait..
In Botswana, at a party, we are spotted as the South Africans. Barely 10 minutes into the conversation, the question pops "Don't you just love Generations?" *Crickets*
Mind you, these are all different people who suffer from Generationsitis.
Currently, Generations has increased its' viewership to 6 561 000, from the previous week's 6 141 000. Clearly, people love this soapie and I still wonder why?
Really now, what's so entertaining about Generations, that even SAFA had to be told to sit down and schedule games for after 8:30pm?
The funny thing is that I haven't met anyone who can tell me why they "love" Generations so much. The common response is always "Nje!" "Cos it's Nice," or "I just like it."
Shem, these remarks explain nothing about you loving the soapie. Why is it easier to explain the love for other soapies like Rhythm City, Scandal and Isidingo, that tell real life stories and are coupled with brilliant acting?
I've always concluded that Generations' success is based on its' convenient time slot where most families are winding down and are going into "lazy mode." Because this is the perfect time to "switch off," it has become more of a habit rather than entertainment.
Further proof is that, any SABC1 show that comes immediately after Generations, is bound to have big numbers in viewership. Can we honestly say that Montana is the best drama on TV at the moment? Really?
I could be wrong, but I think I'm right...
As a last resort... Could all the Generations lovers, please school us on what it is you love so much about the soapie. And then... We can put this matter to rest before it becomes a yawn.
