He’s now R1m richer, has a brand new BMW wheels and has media interviews lined up and more is set to follow. We take a look at
SA Sports Awards.
Olympic gold medallist Chad Le Clos who became a household name during the 2012 London Olympics after he beat up Michael Phelps by a whisker in the 200 metre butterfly to secure a gold medal for himself, was on Sunday night named South Africa’s best sports hero sjamboking all-time favourites such as Oscar Pistorius, Natalie du Toit and Caster Semenya.
The 20-year old spuperstar also bagged a silver medal in the 100 metre butterfly at London 2012.
Last night, his father who was spotted shedding tears of joy after his swimming son banked the R1m and a brand new car, couldn’t contain his joy, standing up when Chad was conveying his gratitude on stage.
Our all-time favourites sports heros and heroines who made it into the spotlight long before Chad and most probably made us fall in love with Olympics did not go home empty handed.
Oscar Pistorius walked away with the title of Male Sports Star of the year with a Disability and Natalie du Toit was also all smiles and bagged the title of Female Sports Star of the year with a Disability while Caster Semenya bowled me over with her signature style as she sprinted to the stage to collect her Sports Woman of the Year win, making me fall in love with her all over again.
Chad was very modest last night after he was announced a hero and congratulated his fellow nominees in the category of Sports Star of the Year and thanked everyone who voted. As if that was not enough, he took to Twitter to express his gratitude.
As Chad is probably preparing himself for Rio 2016, we wish him nothing but everything of the best and hopefully Oscar will stop his tantrums and prepare enough to secure a top spot for himself and the same goes to Caster Semenya and we are anticipating her to run away with a gold medal come Rio 2016.
Natalie just resigned from the sporting scene so we are hoping she will scout for talent to coach because as you all know, we can never put our sporting hopes on soccer and last night lack of soccer winners bares testament to that.
The good thing is that we cannot tolerate mediocrity and reward lazy soccer players. Congrats to Chad. Oscar, Natalie and Caster and others who won.
Oh and yes, I almost forgot now, Chad and Natalie walked away with The Shield of Jove thingie - you guys saw the Sports DG talk about what that means.
He gave a long speech
reading from the autocue about what The Shield means, its origin and all that. You saw that on TV mostaan!
