Your “reality”?
WITH four different reality shows currently on our screens, I’m sure thoughts along the lines of: “How would I cope?” and, more interestingly, “Do I have what it takes to win?” has crossed many a mind.
The four are, in no particular order, Big Brother: Nigeria (Dstv channel 37), The Amazing Race(Tuesdays, SABC 3, 7.30pm), Fear Factor: South Africa (Mondays, etv, 8pm) and The Apprentice (Thirsdays, SABC 3, 8.30pm).
Each show presents its own challenges and I reckon someone who wins one would not necessarily win the other.
The eejit who manages to annoy the most people cooped in one space for weeks on end in Big Brother may simply whimper at the sight of a sheep’s testicle on Fear Factor and be sent packing. And where Fear Factor relies heavily on strength and sheer will power, these are not characteristics you necessarily need in The Apprentice. This show is closely related to Survivor (another season of which is coming soon to SABC 3) where backstabbing, strategy and intellectual gymnastics are crucial to keeping in the game and ahead of a hungry pack.
As for The Amazing Race, thinking on your toes, quickly getting over culture shocks and having the right partner are key ingredients in a successful race. Of course, even if all of the above are sorted that doesn’t always save you from elimination.
The common denominator in all these “reality” shows is a giant pot of gold enticing contestants to behave ridiculously. How far would you go for the grand prize?
