Simpsons forever
IT’S NOT often that a television series runs for more than a couple of seasons before petering out and losing bored viewers.
Formulaic family sitcoms tend to flounder when the cute little brother grows into a teen monster, and there are only so many crime scenes a series can attack without their starting to repeat themselves.
One show that does not risk becoming outdated is The Simpsons, Wednesdays on M-Net at 6.30pm.
Bart will forever remain 10 years old, Homer will be perpetually half-tubby and Marge’s hair never needs a trim.
This animated series debuted on American screens in 1989, reaching us in South Africa a little later, and there are over 13 seasons already recorded.
That makes the irreverent show parodying life in small-town America the longest running cartoon in history.
An interesting fact, gleaned from one of the many websites on the Internet devoted to the Simpson family, is that creator Matt Groening named the wacky family after members in his own family – with the exception of Bart, which is an anagram for Brat.
I remember when Simpsons fever hit South Africa years ago.
My brother and I even bought matching Simpsons shirts, with Bart loudly and obnoxiously telling whoever read the message emblazoned across our chests to “Eat my shorts!”.
Who knows what the Simpson family and the residents of Springfield (not a real town) are up to tonight?
It’s bound to be entertaining.
