Under the microscope
AS MUCH as I wouldn’t say “No” to having millions in my bank account and zillions of freebies for no other reason but being famous, I think the price celebrities pay for their fame and fortune is a tad high.
Imagine never being able to dash into a shop dressed in sloppy trackers on a Sunday morning because the paparazzi will splash that image on the front page of a tabloid together with a nasty caption about how this must indicate you’re due for another rehab visit and, oh my goodness, look how hideous you look without makeup!
What about when you wear a spangly number your stylist assured you made you look “Fabulous, darling”, only to make the “What were you thinking?” pages in the fashion postmortem in the tabloids. Never mind the fact that you’re being judged by nobodies who whip out snide comments when they could never look like you even if they did a Demi Moore. No, in tabloids there is no such thing as respect for those who sell the papers they work for and therefore indirectly employ them.
Which is why I really like and respect Kirstie Alley, who stars in Fat Actress tonight on M-Net at 10.30pm. Ever since I heard Alley was making this comedy/reality series that unapologetically sticks a proud finger at celeb watchers who have ridiculed her weight gain over the years, I knew I wanted to watch. There are only six episodes because she has since slimmed down.
This is recommended viewing for all normal folks who struggle with their weight ... thankfully out of the public eye. Anonymity can be priceless.
