In the tightest Idols SA competition ever, Bunny Majaja (26) from Florida Glen in Johannesburg had to bid Season 9 farewell last night, leaving only four contenders still competing for Mzansi's greatest music title.
The Strepsils Scream O’ Meter, which measures the crowd's response to performances, demonstrated during Sunday's Top 5 Spectacular how close the race to the final is this season.
Bunny was right at the top of the Scream O’ Meter behind Sonke Mazibuko (21) after the contestants had performed their first round of songs, but they then both dropped right to the bottom at the end of Round 2.
But it’s the votes and only the votes that matter and when this week’s votes were counted Sonke, Musa Sukwene and Brenden Ledwaba - who was in the Bottom 3 last week - were safe. That left 19-year-old Zoe Zana from Cape Town and Bunny in the Bottom 2.
Randall Abrahams said the competition is so tight this year because the Top 5 are that good, and the voting keeps varying because all the contestants have had inconsistent performances over the weeks. “It’s anybody’s game,” he said. And with that in mind the judges have decided not to use their 'Save' at all this season. “Anybody on that stage, including you, Bunny, would be a worthy winner,” Gareth Cliff remarked.
The Top 5 were mentored for their performances last week by Pam De Menezes of the South African girl group The Arrows and they were in the house at the Moreleta Park Church Auditorium in Pretoria to perform their hit “Spin My World Around”.
The remaining four contestants will again each perform two songs in the Top 4 Spectacular at the Moreleta Park Church Auditorium this Friday (8 November), with the added pressure of two duets. This week the Top 4 will be mentored by Mzansi superstar ZONKE.
