“Movie Magic Anthems”
The Idols SA Season 9 Top 8 contestants are performing one of the show’s most loved musical themes this week: “Movie Magic Anthems”, with the support of a full orchestra behind them.
And to help them prepare their big movie songs the Top 8 have some really expert mentorship from the South African-born film composer Trevor Jones, who has scored such famous and prestigious movies over the years as John Boorman’s Excalibur, Alan Parker’s Angel Heart and Mississippi Burning, Michael Mann’s The Last of the Mohicans, Jim Sheridan’s In The Name of the Father and Ridley Scott’s G.I. Jane.
Their song choices, in alphabetical order:
Brenden: Kate Bush’s “This Woman’s Work”, from the 1988 John Hughes romantic comedy She’s Having A Baby, starring Kevin Bacon.
Bunny decided to go dramatic, performing the Seal hit “Kiss From a Rose” from the Batman Forever movie soundtrack in 1995.
Maybe heeding Randall Abrahams’s advice from the Top 9 Spectacular, Christina has selected Adele’s big Oscar-winning ballad from last year’s James Bond adventure, Skyfall.
Crystalene went back to 1995 for the Whitney Houston hit “Waiting To Exhale”, from the groundbreaking romantic drama of the same name directed by Forest Whitaker.
Innocent reached even further back into the past for the Phil Collins hit “Two Hearts”, from the soundtrack of the 1988 British true life crime comedy Buster, starring Collins himself in the lead role.
Musa chose the Brian McKnight ballad “Win” from the 2000 biographical flick “Men of Honor”, starring Cuba Gooding Jnr and Robert De Niro.
Sonke chose a Disney song for his performance, “Go The Distance” from the 1997 animated comedy “Hercules”, which was covered for the movie soundtrack by Michael Bolton and by Ricky Martin for the Spanish version.
And Zoe plans to rock the house with her interpretation of the Grammy-winning “Lady Marmalade” cover by Pink, Christina Aguilera, Mýa and Lil’Kim from the 2001 Baz Luhrmann movie Moulin Rouge.
