Smh...that is sad @segs. To be honest, in Nigeria we hardly talk of race. All we talk about most times are tribe, ethnic groups, states....the likes. It's globalization that open most of our eyes to the fact that the world see us as black. We never really knew about it. People like keegan are seen as black here and talia biracial but then again we ask about tribe like what tribe or state are you from type of question. It's quite sad. I found out about this coloured thing on wikipedia and immediately i read, i thought it was messed up.

Being coloured is more to do with culture, it is a culture. Apartheid messed things up with its race categories (i.e where members of one family depending on their shade would be split up to live in separate areas). Within the coloured population you get many different shades, so to say, one would be so close to white, another so close to 'black'. Obviously they also have different decendents, from the Malay, Jamaican, etc slaves that came over to South Africa, to the colonisers (dutch, french, english etc), to the indeginous San/bushmen.
Junia on the other hand is from Namibia, and there, the differentiation is more explicit, she is of the Nama culture/people (and not coloured per say), who are more direct decendents of the San/Bushmen. The Nama language consists of click sounds, however, afrikaans is spoken by many.
As an umbrella term, black is used in South Africa to include those who were previously disadvantaged i.e. black africans, coloured africans, indian africans (at least this is the rhetoric in economics/politics).

@nonwe. In Kenya we also ask about tribe (we have about 40). When it comes to race you're black, white, Indian or Arab. The concept of "colored" as a racial group doesn't exist. President Obama, for example, is considered claimed by the Luo tribe.

@nst no he is coloured lol! i had a hard time accepting him as a black person #hides# when he kept appearing on Oprah early on in his campaign.does Keegan say my nigga?i have been listening very carefully to his converation just to look out for that term - thats how paranoid SA's about race.they do say my nigga to him but i have heard him say it.
