Oh well… I’m here to talk about Generations too. I am no writer and I am not very good at analyzing acting – but hell.. am I a loyal viewer of Generations. I am one of those viewers who rush home at 19:55.. and when I’m staring at the TV so attentively and you ask me.. “you love it, nhe..” I’ll say.. “huh?” then you repeat yourself and I go.. “oh, please, no! I just watch.” But the truth is especially this month, I’d leave in the middle of a church service just to get home in time right after the weather news.. Yes!
Now! Me being such a loyal viewer, I have been very excited about Karabo leaving coz believe it or not I wanted to see how that was going to be creatively included into the storyline and how the producers were going to play-out her exit. To my disappointment writing it in hasn’t been very creative at all. The one creative person was whoever came up with the idea of bringing Tau back. From there on, it’s been disastrous.
When Tau left, I think I remember Rapulana giving in his notice a few months before and the producers had to write his exit in – and it was also shaky. I remember very well that there was a wedding planned for Tau and Karabo and I think the Generations team had anticipated it to be a huge affair. They even ran a competition on TrueLove magazine – with the couple on the cover and inviting us, readers, to the wedding – there was some question you had to answer and if you win you’d be come to the set when they shoot the wedding. Clearly Rapulana resigned before they got that far.
Now back to yesterday’s episode and the events that led to it…and whatever other crap will follow. Including today’s announcement that they buried the wrong body in 2006 – or “Shona Ferguson” killed the wrong person – Tau just disappeared in that building and went into hiding – for four year ! *rolling my eyes*
Yha.. as much as the drama is intriguing, there’s just something wrong with the way it is acted. I’m not sure if it was badly written or it is badly acted, but something just doesn’t add up properly. Well… when Tau appeared on Tuesday night and said “Karabo” I got so excited I wasn’t sure whether to jump or to melt. But that was just for Rapulana. Not the storyline!
Yesterday when he screamed out of the blue “mo tlogelleng! mo tlogelleng” I felt like I was watching some students play at the Baxter Theatre which I’ve paid R30 for. Or an old episode of Lesilo. That was just too funny for words. Like, really now. It’s a good idea to bring Tau back and I’m sure they have all the explanations on where he’s been for the past four years and why he didn’t show up earlier and wara wara.
All Im saying is that couldn’t we have been a little less clumsy about it. All of a sudden Karabo is acting on impulse – being with Lungile out of nowhere – then she goes a bit crazy – screaming ko mashaba media and all. I mean really! Whatsup with that. Then Tau seems to be following her – then he happens to be real. Not much is wrong about that story. Something just doesn’t sit well with the sudden unfolding of events – and the way everything is portrayed. If it had been played like that on Zone 14 or Tshisa or Soul City or even City Sesla. Believe me it would’ve been brilliant. Coz those are dramas (and comedies) and my understanding is they are after immediate impact – you act right and you act now to deliver the right message so that the everything will be completed within 13 episodes. I thought it’s supposed to be a little more relaxed and clever with soapies. Haikhona maan.
You see, I’m trying to put myself in the shoes of a 40+ mama in the rural areas who is a loyal follower of this soapie and has no idea that Connie has left Generations. Looking at the way things have been happening, all I see is confusion on the face of the mama…wondering.. oookaay!???. And it feels like an insult to her intelligence. No man, I think Gene what what writers need to be more respectable towards the viewers.
And the thing that we complain and still watch is also disrespect.
Aag man, I’m struggling to put into words the exact things that Im feeling about this whole Tau thing.
But above everything else, I just want to commend SisConnie on the acting… and above all for her humility. She’s playing these recent scenes just as well as she executed the miscarriage of Siyabonga back then. Brilliant, sisi. And she has been humble enough to play the ridiculous storyline anyway. The screaming and jumping – she’s done it all humbly – the portrayal of a little girl confused by adolescence going back and forth from Paul to Lungile and back to Paul. Eish. Hats off.
