Since it was easter, i decided to go visit my family in Limpopo. It was at the awe of seeing family and long lost friends that i felt at perfect peace. Nonetheless, it was my grandmother i missed the most and all the wisdom she provided to make me the man i am today.
However, most of the wisdom she provided was accompanied by myth that i grew to question trying to find any logic within these myth. For instance, in Venda culture (my culture) you are not supposed to leave a broom outside as they believed that the witch is going to use it to get into the house.
Furthermore, you are not allowed to stand at the door of the house, as granny puts it, 'because you will get all the bad luck from the people who pass on that door' (Haaibo!). Amongst other things you are not allowed to borrow salt from your neighbour at night (i am yet to find the reason behind this).
Nonetheless, some of those myth that really made me question my Gran was the one that that says you are not allowed to sit on the 'driefoot' (what came to mind was when was the 'driefoot' invented that made it included in some of these ancient myths?)
From your respective cultures, what are some of the myths that you picked up or were taught that you feel like you will pass to your kids and what are those that you questioned and felt that it was all nonsense?
Let us hear!
