The most prestigious music awards in the country are happening again this year. As usual the event promises to be bigger and better than the previous ones.

The date has been set to the 17th April 2010 at the Sun City superbowl, with a live broadcast on SABC1 at 20h00.

I was lucky enough to have an invite land in my inbox for both the event and the launch that’s happening this Thursday, the 4th March @ Taboo. This means I get to be one of the first few to find out who gets nominated in each of the categories for MTN SAMA 16.

I know it’s a bit too late but who will we want to see being nominated this year and for what categories?

Recording companies, promoters e.t.c were given the opportunity from the 2nd November to 27th November last year to submit their entries to stand a chance to be nominated for the 16th MTN SAMA, only for albums that were released between the 29th November 2008 and 27th November 2009.

I hope the following artists meet the criteria and that they get nominated for at least 1 category.

1. BIG NUZ for Best Kwaito, Best Duo/Group, Song of the year for Umlilo

                                      Umlilo we Big Nuz ongawothi

2. The house/DANCE category is probably the most contested with abo Tira, Euphonik, Oskido, Cleo, Fresh, Culoe De Song, Lulo Café, Liquideep, Cindo and there is just too many to mention. So I hope they all get a nomination for something, even if they create new categories like “The most played song in a club/tavern/shebeen/pub or whatever else”. I know most of them will qualify.

                           Culoe De Song

3. The Gospel category, I don’t want to lie shem I don’t know anyone who should be nominated here because I hardly listen to the music uyangthola? But I know for sure Joyous Celebration and sis Reebs will def be nominated for something.

4. The AFRO POP category, andikho sure yazi. Who released last year?? OK I know Malaika did but their album was not their best so I don’t want to see them in any category unless there is no one else to nominate.
Abo Siphokazi? Thandiswa what music genre do the fall under vele??

                                    Siphokazi thanking Makhulu

I know Lira won 4 awards last year for her current album, so she clearly released her album way before the starting date.

There is also this song by Robie Malinga and Kelly Khumalo that goes something like
*uthando lwami nawe,
ngolwethu sobabili
umuntu wesithathu akafuneke
Indaba sethu lezo*

Ooh i just remembered Ntando & Nhlanhla also released, so yeah  they deserve a spot on the AFRICAN POP category

5. The HIPHOP/RAP category we looking at bo Teargas, Jozi(still sad that Bongani has left), HHP, Tuks, Skwatta Kamp and whoever else I don’t remember. It is probably the second most contested genre after house/dance.
Still on Hip Hop I don’t know if Jub Jub will be okay in this category maara I want him to be nominated for something shame, he deserves it!

There are also other categories that you can assist with, which are
Best Female
Best Male
Video of the year
Best Jazz
Best Maskandi
Best Newcomer i.e Culoe De Song, Relo e.t.c

or you can also add you own categories that you will like to see in the future
e.g Best lyrics in a song.. tl tl tl
      Best music producer
      Best song writer
      Best Club DJ

I will be back on Friday with the photo’s and nominees list.

Peace!!!

Louise Carver better win this year or the SAMAs will loose credibilty like the SAFTAs. SA music is not all about Kwaito, Afro POP and House. It seems when it comes to so called "white categories" the judges just pull a name randomly. Louise deserves to win a SAMA
