Now, This Is Ridiculous

Everytime you switch on the tele to watch the news or listen to the radio, the Haiti trauma is being addressed as the journos there reveal such harrowing stories that you are left wondering, why is relief taking so long when the super power country America is so heavily involved in the rescue mission.

haiti search

The survivors are hungry, thirsty and heavily in need of medical supplies and attention BUT everything is taking long getting to them so they have no choice but to fend for themselves. Somewhere in the rubble, where people are waiting for rescuers – a week later – there are some shops which still have food, water and supplies that can help a little. SO, the survivors reach in and take some pasta, water and whatever is necessary for the simple human basic needs – hunger and thirst!!!

haiti survivor

What happens? They get shot at by the police! WTF? You are securing rubble with food in it and survivors are starving! What the hell are those gun-totting idiots thinking? “Oh, I’d rather these people starve than break-in to somebody’s shop?” Maybe the person you are shooting is a family member of the owner of that tiny store with food? Is is absolutely critical that you shoot at the starving people trying to get by? Who the *bleep!* has money to go buy the damn food? Who is managing that store at this point?

wyclef
I have so much respect for this man!! yeh, he went home to his country and pulled those people out - no guns!!

PEOPLE THINK!!!!!!! Those people need help! And if they can help themselves – why shoot at them? That food is perishables!!! Should it go to waste and go off because you are eager to shoot your gun? The situation in Haiti is too desperate to consider what the survivors are doing 'looting'!!!!!!!??

It is just not possible to consider the desperation of the people as looting and unruly behavior!! Some have not eaten or drank a drop of water in 8 days, and a second earthquake just hit the place yesterday!

haiti gal

ADDING TO THE TRAGEDY: Fabienne Geismar, 15, lies dead on top of a collapsed building after being shot in the head. Police had tried to disperse looters in Haiti's capital, Port-au-Prince, and Fabienne was a casualty. Haiti is being described as 'hell on earth' after being hit by a devastating earthquake last week, and another yesterday Picture: ALON SKUY

Check The Times front-page today!! Did that girl have to die? Was it absolutely neccessary to end her life for taking pasta in a dreadful situation???!!! After she survived 2 horrid earthquakes!!!???

Did she have to be killled by a bullet from an idiot for getting FOOD!!!!!!??? WHY??!!! Such cruelty!!

What's happening in Haiti is truly a desperate and dire situation. However we need to be objective in judging the situation the law enforcement are faced with. Yes people are starving and their desperation leads them to looting etc. Sensationalizing the stories that come from Haiti is not helping the situation either. What you may not read about in this story is the fact that someof the looters were actually shooting at the police.

The police shouldnt be using live amunition to disperse this looters but I doubt anyone in their right mind would take a gun and aim it at a 15 year old for stealing pasta. Responsible reporting is really key here. What happened is unfortunate and regretable but we need not fan the fire by painting the people who are trying to keep order as monsters who kill hungry kids for stealing food. I can only imagine how difficult it must be for the police in that country. This are their fellow country men and to be in a situation where u have to stop people from getting food when you know they desperately need it must be daunting for these police.

If looters were just left to do as they please the country's limited resources and economic stability (whateva is left of it) will collapse and then the situation will get worse and death will be a certainty for mainy Haitians.

My heart felt condolences goes to the little girls''s family and the nation at large but I also feel sorry for the men and women in the law enforcement agencies there. It cant be easy for.

God hear the plight of Haiti!!!  Much luvvv Blaque

<<Yes people are starving and their desperation leads them to looting >> looting? looting?!!!! BLAQUE, I have a problem with the acts of the people in Haitib being called looting... those people are tnot taking jewellery and fancy stuff... they are taking FOOOOD!!!!!!!

what journos report and are seeing and what wyclef has done in that country is not bein sensationalised... my dear, those people are suffering!! that NATURAL disaster caused havoc, they don't need GUNMEN in their counries... they need support and help!

Segololo
21 Jan 2010 12:39

<<I can only imagine how difficult it must be for the police in that country. >>
should police even be carrying those damn guns!?? should there be even what we call police in that situation? what exactly are they policing?!!! they should be helping get people out and saving lives... there is no law... there should only be rescue efforts, not law-enforcement... when eventually the country starts being rebuilt, they will need law-enforcement... at this point, people need food, water and to be helped from the situation NOW!

Segololo
21 Jan 2010 12:43

yes, some control needs to be enforced but make sure the survivors are moved to centers where they can get help... the reports I have herd, the people are not sure where to get supplies and they are desperate as they see trucks driving past them with no information being given on where they can get help... AND what about the French help that got refused and sent back?

the people reportedly shot at where taking pasta from the rubbled shops, they were not just randomly looting fancy nonsense!! they were taking food!

Haiti is having a huge governance issue, the local authority are struggling to cope and abducted most of their responsibilities to NGO"s and the UN .i was listening to 702 as they were interviewing one of the NGO their biggest complain was that the government is not doing enough,to make their job easy. They are not flying in enough military and police forces from other towns to help with relief efforts.NGo's are even struggling to get to trouble arears cause theres a shortage of security.

the earthquake only affected the capital but we are not hearing of any efforts from the other regions within haiti coming to port au princes aid.the lawlessness is actually very disgraceful cause it makes everyone jobs hard, from relief efforts such as handing out food to rescueing trapped people.its not that black and white sego

Oh Segololo... sometimes we need to use our brains and not let emotions cloud logic.

Desperate situations leads to desperate measures. Human nature teaches that where there is no form of control greed and other ill-behaviours flourish. I never said people should be denied HELP but Haiti needs some form of control now before the situation gets worse. Fact it some of the Haitians have guns on them and they use them to get what they want. If all the guns from the police were taken out of Haiti and everyone was left to take anything they want that would worsen the situation.

Haiti's recovery also heavily lies in haiti's ability to sustain some form of trade. if the economic sector of that country were to collapse then the country will become a death pit. Haitian traders need to be able to suatain their businesses.

By the way this is the sort of sensationalism Im talking about. Get your facts right Sego. THE STORE AWAS NOT A FOOD STORE IT WAS AN ORNAMENT STORE. The people were not stealing food they we stealing ornament and paintings. The girl was shot by a stray bullet that was fired in the air and she was carrying 2 paintings and a glass ornament with some money in her hand that one of the passerby stole. They were not looting FOOD!!!!

READ the detailed story here :

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/jan/20/haiti-earthquake-teenager-shot-police

You can go to Haiti and give every survivor a million $, trust me within a few months the country will be back to what it is now. At this stage from what I have read and seen on the news, Haiti needs some security!! Doctors had to leave hopitals because they feared for their lives. read cnn.com blog

there is no law... there should only be rescue efforts, not law-enforcement

The only way you can guarantee that aide is getting to the people who need it is by having some form of control on its distribution. Human beings only think of themselves. If there were no law enforments there and everyone was left to do as they please do you think the most vulnerable of Haitian society would ever get aide?

It's really sad. I do not understand how/why food is taking so long to get to people.
What happened to hellicopters? Cant they have helicopers bringing food  with these soldiers protecting it and handing it out in a proper and organised manner?

I really do not get it?

We really dont know what happen to cause these people to start shooting but whatever it is people need understand that people are starving out there...

I hope the food is not being delayed by the never ending debates in different parliaments. They are debating how the food should be distributed.

blaque, a diguised insult still remains an insult... kindly respect my views just as I respect yours and don't insult you in any way....

I have family in Haiti who are seeing and experiencing the trauma in Port-au-Prince. Thankfully, they survived both earthquakes and we pray that they will return home to us safely - soon.

I have followed the reports from haiti through different medias, not just american sites and news stations so have read the reports of people looting pasta and getting shot at, as early as tuesday, and chose not to blog but the article about that little girl hurt me more than anything in some time...

I will not insult your references and your research, or yourself in any of anyone's blogs and yours. Kindly refrain from doing so on mine.

Segololo,  your emotions got the better of you here

GML, even most of the money donated to Haiti is getting through there slowly because most banks are not working and  companies are struggling to gain access to currency because of the quake. Buildings were destroyed, banks, churches, companies, etc. So basically everything is slow, even the means of transport.

Rescue teams and the police are frustrated and giving up hope as we speak. People have nothing, hence they are stealing anything in sight and getting shot in the process, hence they are fighting for the little food that goes through.

Now one of the main concerns is the crime because most prisons went down and criminals either died or escaped (or saved, whichever way you look at it).

Things are really out of hand after the second quake, rescue teams are scared that a  third quake might strike and just like the first one, kill thousands of people...

Sad story it is,particulalry the little girl.

There is something that i cant quite undeestand with the people in this natural disaster prone areas. WHY do they return to these places when they know that the same disaster could occuir again?

I read during the week that Senegal (is it) is willing to extent citizenship to Haitians if they are willing. A gesture i thought noble from 3rd world country, because if you cant give money you can give other things as well....
But i wonder if they actually would take up the offer, because rebuilding their lives in that island makes no sense to me at all (senstiments aside...). As it did not with the New Orleans situation. I dont know, my view may be very shortsighted and narrow ofcourse...
But then i imagine them prefering to be part of the Americanas(is it) by all means more that they would want to be a part of Africa. We'll see.

And the other sad thing about Haiti is that the natural disaster just exarcebated the other issues that they were contending with. Its a sad sad situation.

On the matter of police carrying guns....I heard that since the prisons also collapsed, very dangerous prisoners escaped and some of them even got hold of the guns their warders had and now they are on the loose killing and doing more damaged to the very poor and damaged island...

The WE in that statement emphasises that this is a general statement. If it was meant to be an insult on you it would have been "YOU need to use your brain...." mara this is just demoralisisng. I tend to believe that criminals nommater how hardened still have a bit of a heart that needs to be inspired out, and you would expect that in a time like this, they would pull together with everyone to show that they are still human. They deserve to be locked up in the phantom zone with the heartless extraterestrial criminals (wishfull thinking). This is just wrong.

@ mabhe....we are indeed fortunate in SA....because it is not a natural disaster prone dry land, unless ofcourse global warming changes things. Our issues can be dealt with by human initiative, if only those in leadership could shape shape shape up...

You know i was so touched yesterday when I heard that a 3 weeks old baby had been removed alive from the rubble after being there for a week, A full week without food or water. I got so emotional because I was actually asking myself where is God in that situation then I got my answer. He is there, he is always there. That child is the least person anyone could have expected to survive, but she made it out alive.
