Bafana Bafana Demand Bonuses

So just 4 sleeps before the Confed Cup tournament, and we're hearing that there is unhappiness in the Bafana Bafana Camp about bonuses.

logo

Kick Off.com reports that :

According a source in camp; “The players want R180 000 each for every game of the group matches (against Iraq, New Zealand and Spain). They have also demanded R250 000 each for the semis should they win and R500 000 each to win the Final. There is a meeting today to try to solve the issue, because Safa say that’s too much money to pay the players,” the source revealed this morning.
(that was yesterday)

Rowen Fernandez was also quoted as saying:

".... nation shouldn’t panic ahead of the Confederations Cup opener against Iraq on Sunday. “It is not a major problem,” he tells KickOff.com. “It will be sorted out very soon and I can tell you the players are still focused on the job at hand.

“We all understand that it is not about the money, but representing our country. The players’ committee has had meetings with the management of the national team. But the general consensus among the players is that the tournament is more important than the money.”

Mina I don't have a problem with players negotiating bonuses but I just think their timing sucks. It might be strategic for them seeing that SAFA is at their mercy but for us the fans who are gearing up for the tourney, it's a bit unsettling.

I say SAFA must offer them R10 Million each for winning the Confederation Cup and I promise you they still won't win.
I'm not being negative, I'm one of Bafana's proudest supporters but sometimes we have to face the facts and one of them is that we might do well (and I hope we do) but we are not going to win the Confederation Cup 2009. I'm glad that Benni McCarthy is not in the squad coz the poor guy would be blamed for this!!!

I agree with Thato Mataboge on Metro FM when he said.....

Eintlik, iqalwe hubani lendaba????" Sifun'ukwazi!!!!!

So , what do you think of this whole thing?

This does NOT make sense at all.

According to 702:
Reports this morning that Bafana Bafana demanding more money, but Bafana manager Sipho Nkumane told 702 a settlement has been reached.

I am sick & tired of these poor Bafana Bafana. The Confed Cup has not even started yet and they are now starting the very same *bleep!* and they did in Barkina Faso (wanted big fat salaries) before the Tournament. SAFA need to show all these guys to door and we can start from the scratch to form another team that will represent SA. These guyz are not proud to play for SA all they want is money play *bleep!* afterwards! I can tell you now they are not going to win even a single match in this Tournament watch...the space!!!!!!!! Now it's up to SAFA to put all the money into a deep drain for useless Bafana Bafana.

kwa kwa kwa kwa that's exactly what I'd say as well. Mina I gave up on Bafana Bafana long time ago. And besides they are in no position to ask for more money coz the only goals they score are with their girlfriends and not on the soccer field.

Brown Shuga
10 Jun 2009 09:08

According to Cape Argus:

"Bafana Bafana players are reportedly set to pocket R650 000 each if they manage to lift the Confederations Cup.

The South African Football Association have yet to comment on the bonus structures, but the Cape Argus understands that if the nation's stars fail to win the tournament, they will still earn R500 000 each, while a place in the semi-finals will see each player walk away with R400 000.

The latter prize is tipped to be the most likely pay-out as European champions Spain along with Brazil and Italy stand in Bafana's way of winning the eight-team showpiece"

BS - so you dont see them bafana bafana winning the tourney?
thing is these are the first things that should be addressed when the boys come to the camp so that they choose whether they want to play on not. it will save  some of them time to be with their families LOL.

BUT is it really about representing the country and not about the money?
I think its about the players making a living for themselves. if it was about the nation then , they could be on government payroll.

Well this is Egypt African Nations cup all over again. Can somebody remind me how many games did they win and how many goals did they score. Yep zilch.

They need to get over themselves, they not all that. Talk about big ego's. Senegalese player's and the rest of the African teams don't even get payed sometimes for playing for their countries and look at how far they go in tournaments.

I don't remmember Clive Baker's squad demanding such huge bonuses and guess what they won tournaments and games.

Talk about waste of space.

Yes "I AM PISSED OFF".

They need to prove that they can deliver the goods first. You never hear of European and Latin American teams holding their confederations to randsom over pay. That's because they are proffessionals and not football wannabe journey men.

cameroon, ivory coast, senegal players - they play for recognition by the european countries and their countries cannot afford to pay them. what are our players playing for - to make money, this guys dont think of even playing in europe but to make enough before they are out of play. just like Steve Kekana said on afro cafe - music nowadays is easily forgotten like football players in SA.

it all shows how we blacks really operate - i am sorry to say this but it all boils down to poor management and bribery. Cricket is well managed so is rugby - this is why you will never hear the players boycotting games and making  unnecessary demand. if Khoza can demand millions for negotiating the ABSA deal what do you expect players who are supposed to look up to him do - simply do the same.

due to history this whole thing should have been solved why before they started training. i blame the SAFA management. all they think of is about themselves (monetary)

Aaron Mokoena, McBeth Sibaya, Benson Mhlongo....don't know if I heard Booth's name too??

I'm very disappointed at Bafana.Check out the rugby team or the cricket team, you never hear of such stories and the guys are the world champs9springboks).even when they were not world champs the team has discipline and pride to stoop to such low depths. We are all busy trying to drum support for these guys and then the demand high pay cheques even before kicking the ball or even winning something that will  justify such big pay cheques.the guys need to work on thei priorities.
The cricket team and rugby team players earn big money cause theyve earned it. We are a rugby and cricket powerhouse. Bafana need to get to that level then they wont even need to ask for bonuses they will be tricklingmore than teko Modise's endorsments.I think the spirit ofentitlemanship without doing anything to earn the entitlement is pathetic.sies on bafana

I personally do not see any problem with these demands if the players feel that they are worth more than what they're been offered they have a right to take this up with SAFA and SAFA has 2 options either to give them what they are asking or dismiss them.

Patriotism has nothing to do with this, most of these players have only one source of income which is soccer, you have to make as much money as you can before you reach the age of 35 at most. Prostituting themselves is not gonna help as it doesn't pay the bills and feed their families.

Remember these are not monkeys that you throw bananas at after performing stunts for you at the zoo. I'm sure the Coach and the Executives are gonna get way more than what the players are asking for after the tournament on top of their fat salaries nogal.

there is one thing thats becoming a trend here in SA. We seem to have resorted to striking as the solution for everything.
nurse - strike
doctors - strike
construction workers - strike - why the know that the govy has no way out but just to increase their salaries
teachers - strike
actors and actress - strike
Soccer players - they wil soon strike by boycoting the games

we need to learn and teach the next generation that striking is not the way forward and boycotting games. there are contracts and negotiations.

cleve
10 Jun 2009 12:34

For once I agree 100 % with One and Only, Soccer is their only income and the lifespan of their careers is much shorter than the average 9-5 job. This is history in the making and why can't they be compensated for it. Compared to the othercountries they are being paid nothing and it's not like SAFA does not have that kind of money.

Brown Shuga
10 Jun 2009 12:43

@ One & Only and Cleve
I don't think anyone is saying they should not be compensated or that they should not negotiate their salaries. My concern is the timing & their tactics..
I also can't comment on whether their demands are ludicrous or not coz as it is we are getting conflicting reports.

As BBK said, yes, soccer is their 9-5 but Bafana Bafana is not their employer, they are employed by their respective clubs, that's where they should toyi-toyi. This also does not mean that they should therefore get peanuts from SAFA, all it means is that they can't use the "soccer is my only income" argument with Bafana.
Besides, every player has a right to turn down a national call up.

tha - bang
10 Jun 2009 13:02

@ one and only
If bafana wants to get big bonuses like big teams they need to be winning games like big teams. Why should SAFA being paying huge bonuses and getting nothing in return.thats like saying its okay to spend a million on a UNO car cause its just a car just like a Ferrari.when the uno does not come with the luxury or the speed of a ferrari. It's not thesame thing.
The guys get paid, and they should be payed but if they want more they should produce trophies ,improve their world ranking to be at least in be in the top 20 in the world. Then everyone will gladly pay them whatever amuont they need. But as long as we are not getting result, why should we inflate their bonuses?

odie
10 Jun 2009 13:08

Brown sugar - its the only way the players know that their demands will be met.
doctors strike because they know that they will be given their demands

What job is this that makes her so indispensable?

Thabang as much as I would not like to admit this but you have to invest in the uno for it to perform like a ferrari. You can't invest nothing and expect it to perform like a ferrari. The worst part is that the players know that there is money and all this fat cats are doing is fattening their own pockets.

People like abo Mark Fish and Lucas Radebe have been complaining about the money since 1992 but these officials don't want to listen and they'd rather pay a coach who doesn't even speak the same language as the players. NX!

Don't even go to the coach issue, if he spoke English, there would even bigger communication issues.

It's not like they are getting paid peanuts. Wena if u want a raise at work, do u ask ur boss to just invest in u, without u showing an potential????

Nonny those guys won the African Cup of Nations but they were still payed peanuts SA squad once showed potential but still were not compensated for it.  I heard the today on Highveld there are bigger issues and we must not be biased because of what we read in the newspapers.

One listener to Radio 702 said: "When Bafana players start producing results and winning big tournaments, then they can earn the big bucks. They are mediocre at present and should earn their bonuses. They cannot expect money for nothing."
Thank u for the link Monchy, i agree with the above comment. I am so glad that SAFA aint bowing down to Bafana.

@ nonny - i would say i have learnt that experience plus what you bring to the company are valuable - her client base is significant and has ample experience. clients will follow her wherever she goes. people leave because of her and mind you the bosses are so aware.

@ Nonny, okay, i am officially in love with you after this comment, ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!!!!

nna, honestly, i'm not going to comment on the amount because i'm honestly not well versed in these issues...

where i have a SERIOUS issue is the timing, again i ask... why the hell did you leave your home and go to work, not knowing how much your pay packet is? WHO DOES THAT????? Imbeciles...

and the worst part is we all know they're not going to win (sorry peeps, but i don't see it happening)... i predict a stunning victory for iraq, everyone underestimates these guys. they beat all the other asian teams, and on that devastating news item on etv on monday night, Bafana players admitted knowing NOTHING about Iraq....errrr, aren't they supposed to be studying their opponents techniques and stuff????? re mathatheng....in fact, re masepeng...

I believe that this players have seen recession affecting the whole world i would personally like to advise them to at least lower a bit because the new administration is having a lot at stake, trying to creat jobs, if  this could be discussed i would like every player to donate at least half to organisations to create jobs. i will support you guys all the way.

This is history in the making and why can't they be compensated for it.

History my foot....these moegoes embarrassed the nation by failing to qualify for da African Nations Cup and if we were not hosting the World Cup, our national team would not be participating in next year's World Cup.

All the national teams that will be competing in da Confederations are champions in their Continents except Italy(World Champions). What have these overrated bunch of losers achieved, ngaphandle kokusi embarasa qha.

We are love our country.....look at what the Proteas and the Springboks are doing, putting South Africa on the map. It's time for them to pull up their socks and win the Confederations.....and then we will say they deserve the R34 million.

yes-yes agreed !! they need to DO first, then they can have bonuses up the wazoo.

(At least they're being open about how much they get paid - unlike their fellow-actors (TV actors) who refuse to mention a thing, tsk.)

15 Jun 2009 08:41

are you serious????? A game without GOALS is nothing, NOTHING!

M dead serious Shuggz….
I tell my Model C grand-children that we can read about the movie (eg John Q) and can therefore predict/ determine the final outcomes, but we still go to cinemas & / or rent the movie just to watch the movie again and again, just to see the talent, acting, emotions, processes, etc. So if we wanted the final outcomes in a game, we would not spend 90 min watching it…. We can just wait 4 Vuyo Mbuli to read the result on ML….!
That game was great, & BafanaX2 played well…. Pity our "huge-bonus-demanding boys did not win, they just did not have the God of the Iraqis on their side…. I have suggested that SA must consider having one God to pray… this multi-religion is not working 4 us…..!

60 Plus Madala
15 Jun 2009 08:46

I felt very sorry for the New Zealand team. # goals in 17 minutes....

I hope we dont suffer the same defeat. at least not 5-0.

I stoped watching after goal #3..

Otherwise I think Bafana Bafana's performance was good even though they did not score. It was a good game to watch

Matha

Parker GML Parker thats what i can say for now...ka bela mo ke leng teng.

xobho
15 Jun 2009 10:41

I would like to disagree with you GML. The bafana bafana perfomance was not good at all. And frankly, if that is how they will be playing through out the tournament then they will be defeated ngabo 10 nil. Did you see how spain played? Bafana can not play defending football. They need to attach to win. I think they should also cut the "a draw is fine" mentality coz that is not enough. Our couches should know when to make substitutes as well. You can not make substitutes at the last minute and expect a goal when there was none in 80 min. I think that makes sense.

GML
15 Jun 2009 10:47

I understand that Xobho and I also think that the coach should have made substitutes earlier on especially Parker for Simphiwe Tshabalala.

If you look at the shots at goal (I know that doesnt help but then), bafana had more shots than Iraq, which means that they are attacking or at least trying to.... The problem is that the balls just dont get into the net.

But the coach needs to make early substitutions man

Bafana should have won that game....this is unacceptable. How I wish Alberto Parreira was still the national team coach. We have guys like Elrio van Heerden, Siphiwe Tshabalala and Steven Pienaar who are match winners, but Santana chose to wait until the final 10 min to make substitutions.
