So what makes you buy a magazine?

Is it loyalty to the magazine?

Is it the star who's gracing the cover?

The screaming headlines that are sometimes in such painfully sharp colours?

The juicy stories that the mag promises you will read once you flip open?

Well, whatever your reason...here are a few June 2009 covers that I'd like you to look at and let us know whether they cover convince you to pop out your hard earned rands and pay.
I'm hoping Ill remain interested long enough to make this a monthly feature.

True Love

This is a beautiful cover, even though the cleavage is distracting. I won't buy it though coz whenever I buy True Love, I get disappointed with the quality of some of their stories. I'd rather read someone else's copy than buy.
I love the colours though, and Lira looks beautiful.

Real Magazine

Sizwe aka DJ Slyso (Umhlobo We Nene) is gracing the Real Mag cover with Glen & Unathi. First thing I noticed about the cover was Unathi's gorgeous dress, her shoes, Glen and then Slyso, who looks like he's not happy with being on the left. I mean, that's the worst position coz all this writing goes over you and it ends up being like you were actually a last minute inclusion. That's wrong coz I love Slyso, my first radio gig was on his breakfast show!!

Anyway, even though the colours are okay, I think this cover could have been more neat. Too many headlines = too much clutter.
Real is a nice mag though, a friend got me a 6 months subscription last year and I enjoyed it but honestly some of the advice given in this magazine is too lightweight for my hardcore heavyweight problems...
Will probably buy just to read about the Great One coz there's something about Glen I absolutely adore :-)

Intimacy

What a disappointment for such a beautiful thing. I DEMAND that they change their name to Intimacy In Die Plaas. If those two people on the cover are a real couple, could the mag not have taken a better pic of them? I mean, this looks like they just asked those two to send them a picture for the cover.
This cover screams CHEAP!
I mean those headlines are interesting but there's no way I'm taking sex tips from a magazine with that cover! No offence to the couple, I actually think the lady is beautiful and so is her hair mara the guy's suit...tie...actually when was this picture taken??? sigh

P.S. Even that "lobola" thing at the bottom seems so misplaced...like an afterthought.

P.S.S. That lime sticker on the right bottom corner says "happier marriage guaranteed". Kanti magazines are allowed to lie? Tjo!

Mamas & Papas

Beautiful family. It's nice to see the kids smiling so happily, considering they lost their mom not so long ago.
We'll forgive them for the gazillion colours coz it's all about parenting, kids etc.
I know there are those tabloid readers out there who would have liked it if the mag had written “Cheating Husband” rather than “Loving Husband”. Naughty kids!

I don't understand this mag means by “Reclaim ...Do It Your Way”. I mean, the magazine is all about giving tips and advice on parenting so where does the “Do it your way” come from if they still want you to read their tips?

MOVE!

Puntsu puntsu puntsu Khanu wa papa!! lol
I'm sure a lot of you will go out in numbers to buy this one coz that's what Khanyi does, she sells magazines! So on this cover she says she's not broke, she's even taking her daughter to Disneyland. Wow! This cover is VERY current... because it answers a question that everyone is wondering about. “Is Khanyi broke?” Well done to MOVE.

I see it's R7, wasn't it R5 the other day? Heheh anyway, I hope the cover has improved from that newspaper like feel it had.
That line about “My twins have different fathers” is also very interesting, I've never heard of that.
Khanyi takes great pictures and with each picture she knows what message she wants it to send out. This picture says "I'm Khanyi the mom."
NB: Move is a weekly so the above is the 3 June issue.

Move: Parent!

This is a new monthly mag that's an extension of Move! and it's all about Parenting. Their editor claims it's the first parenting magazine aimed at the black market but I don't know how true that is coz I don't think Mamas & Papas is aimed at the white market?
Menzi and his baby look so cute and really happy!
I won't buy it though coz none of those issues mentioned on the cover affect me. Besides, if she's his sunshine, why did he not mention her when he accepted the Mzansi Star Award?
Hahahah okay, I'm kidding. Nice cover bhut' Menzi.

BONA

First of all...SIGH!!!!!!!!!!

Secondly. Kudos to them for surviving the industry for so long!

Thirdly, what the hell is up with BONA making noise about Mshoza's BOOBS? Isn't this supposed to be a family magazine??? Sexy photos??
Hayi maan, kanti what happened to Bona since I last read (15 years ago)????
I grew up on this mag (and PACE) and we used to enjoy reading “The Bafanas” at the back pages. Are they still there?
Bona readers, is the mag still THICK? Is this where Bafana Bafana got their name from?

Anyway, I don't know why Mshoza (who, in this picture looks like she had a nose job too) is even getting a magazine cover just coz she had a boob job. I mean, there are more hardworking sisters out there. Can someone please put Zandile Msutwana on a cover?

P.S. I see there's also something in there about Bonang. ...well, I think B must take a lil break from mags/papers so we can miss her a little y'know.. create more demand, that kinda thing.

DESTINY

WOW, wow, WOW!!!!
Khanyi said my free subscription would only be for 6 months but 16 months later, I'm still receiving the
mag in the mail and I am NOT complaining because this is the best South African magazine I have ever come across. There is something in DESTINY's tone that leaves me wanting to be and do so much BETTER than I am now. These successful women's stories are written in such a way that there is no chance for that green-eyed thingy to show its face. Eish, let me just say there is a definite and positive difference between the first time you pick the magazine up and when you put it down. IF you are who the mag is the intended for. I'm curious about whether people really pay the kind of money those advertised clothes in there cost!

This is a BALANCED magazine, I love it! The Entrepreneur Report in this June issue is a must read for those wanna be businesswomen out there.

Oh, and there's Destiny Man coming out, the first issue will be in stores around the 17th June, I hope it gets the same amount of success as this one. Khanyi won't be editing that one and I'm glad she's given that task to a man. Oprah would still insist on gracing Oprah Man covers if there was ever to be one! Ahem.

I've said enough...here are other issues with international faced and I don't really care much to comment on them...

ELLE - Jessica Alba , I've seen BETTER pics of her! I had to look at this twice to notice it was Jessica.

FAIR LADY - Must every Charlize Theron cover be about her being South African??? *sigh*

For me its NEVER loyalty shame..... no ways, not in this recession! Sunday Times has proven over the last few months/ years that loyalty does NOT guarantee quality returns 4 my hard-earned money

This writing goes over you and it ends up being like you were actually a last minute inclusion.
kwa kwa kwa.... that was my first thought.... that they [mag] could not pay 4 photo shoot & just asked him 2 the email pic, & he sent the pic very late, unaware of the deadlines, by then layout was almost done.... then they just include 'for the sake' since they have already promissed you! I don't know the dude & so 4 a sec I thought he was the taxi driver who survived the accident!

well, I think B must take a lil break from mags/papers Nope, they must go back 2 their old story lines.... oooo Mprofethi Mhambi who caught isithundzela or has ressurected a dead person whose death was caused by 'baloyi".... my brother & ibandla lakhe lama Zioni used 2 love those stories years & years ago.... & the new issue with such headline would be advetrised on Radio TKI [Transkei....]

The green [forestish/ farming] background for both intimacy & move will be the reason I don't even look at those mags in stores coz the only green I buy is Golf/ sport related! Other greens r farm magazines that I only read them coz I have to, but then my boss pay 4 them

I won't buy it though coz whenever I buy True Love, I get disappointed with the quality of some of their stories. I'd rather read someone else's copy than buy.

I was also dissapointed with the magazine when they had Sonia Sedibe on the cover. The following month someone complained that she did not talk about her other son..I felt that to have it as a winning letter was just low because Sonia couldn't respond to the letter! And the truth is we don't know what really happened during the interview....

Real is like MOVE! but with a better paper quality! I don't even bother with it!

If I ever own a magazine it will seriously look like Destiny! Talk about class and wowness!

Its been a while...Nice one BS...please do this monthly...this might help the Mag editors out there.
Here's my 2 cents worth:
True Love - Love Lira but eish recession...only one mag a month bafethu and that goes to.....(read on)
True love is not the same anyhow...
Real - Big ups to this cover...Unathi and Glen and Slyso look clean...they all have a dirty kinda look on a day to day...or maybe Glen is a lil better or is it the orange and green clothes he likes wearing??? Unathi you look super fab...dont have money to buy the mag though..
Mama/Papa - What a name! 1st time I see this mag...Lucas, ur baby girl is sooo cute!
Move - R7 huh? I thought Khanyi doesnt do cheap...is she...errrrr...realy not broke? Anyways, dont care coz she looks hungry. Note to Khanyi: Why are you torturing the baby with braides? She's still too young hle..(and looks like Mandla)
Parent - Aisha's hair...read above!
Elle - Jessica Alba - you are one sexy chick!!!.. *singing Beyonce...If I was a boy* Wouldnt buy Elle anyways...waiste for my hungry brain!

Destiny - this is where my money goes...lots to learn...very inspiring...Mzansi has female stars****!!! @BS...yah neh..the clothes are quite pricy but hey, if you have a GUCCIlicious platinum card...you are the ish! Errrr....Mrs Bouwer, you are beautiful, would love to see your real hair. And yah, your smile is not convincing hle, even with the pics inside the mag.

I buy a mag for fashion tips coz sometimes I really need them.
Can't go wrong with a cosmopolitan wen it comes to that and it has tons and tons of improving your life with your man which one can't really complain about.
I buy move only after pay day wen the money is still driving me crazy but it's not worth it as the mag has two good stories.
So I religiously buy Drum and Cosmopolitan

I first check who is on the cover, i would buy Destiny because of Carol, i love her and she is still as beautiful as ever. I thought Bona was discontinued. You forgot to mention Marie Claire, it's my favourite.

I buy move every week despite who is on the cover coz its affordable and I like their fashion tips coz they choose clothes that I can afford. I also buy Cosmopolitan every month and I have all issues from last year I just cant throw them away coz you can re-read that magazine on that list its my no1

I buy Psychology, its so dense it actually takes me forever to finish. I used to buy Destiny a lot cos i like it, but its also too business dense for me, same theme all the time (business/money...etc) so i skip atleast 2 months in-between. I can't for the life of me read Cosmo every month, they recycle their material, i have Cosmos dating back to 2006 and what i can read in this months issue has already been covered before.

Real and Move are pretty much the same to me, i dislike them.

I dont buy mags every month or the same mag every month, i'd rather buy a book.

I dont like Drum/YOU either, you can only read about 5 pages out of the whole mag, the rest is gibberish.

I read Sarie and Huis Genoot,those are my fav magazines.I buy Destiny because i looooooove Khanyi,Cosmo because it makes me feel sophisticated.LOL! Any motoring magazine is a must have for me!

i used to love soul mag, back in the day but something about it changed so i stopped

subscribed with true love (i had 12 month subscription for only R29.00 thru discovery- vitality), i changed my address, informed them but they decided to continue sending it on my old address, so i didnt renew the subscription

i also used to bt drum and move ... mostly for puzzle, then recipes but i could get most of the recipes right so i stopped.

Nowadays, if i see a cover that interest me i go to pick n pay- brightwater commons, read the story that i want and leave in peace with my cash or i just tell a friend bot certain mag and the story that is so intereting in there, they buy then i read...lol

i've never seen some of those magazines in my life. Got a free copy of the True Love mag in May and have still not read it. I think that mag-reading is no longer my thing.

i'd buy a magazine if there was something i really wanted to read-forget the cover story- if it's an issue that resonates with me, i'll buy the mag (be it bona, drum or you mag).

The biggest competition to magazines is the internet, me thinks

I am a serious magazine buyer and my Fav are You, glamour, people, marie claire and Cosmo i love cooking and fashion tips so i have to buy every month i am even subcribed to four mags

I even got plenty of free hampers for my subs and they are so worth it..

I cant stop gazing at Lira's dress........tjo it is stunning....i think i'm gonna use the pattern for my bridesmaids......hai no shem...it is stunning.....Yep...TRUE LOVE IT IS FOR ME That's how i pic my magazines.....for checking out the outfits....so it the cover girl or guy is wearing a killer outfil i definately go for that mag........I am so gonna buy true love mag.........

Otherwise.......i know MOVE also features some interesting gossip at times so i would buy it for that...more like RGB in a MAG.........

But on the real.....Destiny is more a mag i would buy to read....It's realistic and that's just me right there......

intimacy *sigh!!!!!!!!!.......Couldn't they atleast take a pic with them naked and holding hands...that would have been more convincing....I think.

ELLE Mag....like True Love to you...i find more dissapointing......i expect too much and get to little or nothing......it's like the feeling you get when think you are about to sneeze and somehow you get distracted...and you end up not sneezing....Feel me??Yeah...that feeling......

PS: Great article BS......I love it.........this makes life easy when you want to choose which mag to buy........Great marketing for the magazines as well....are they reimbursing you for this....Well they bettar......

This is a fabulous article, mina I am a fan of Destiny all the way, anything else I read in the store and leave the mag right there. I took a picture of Lira's cover because I wanted to copy the pattern of her dress, minus the disturbing clevage.

BS, by the way, Move Mag increased from R5 to R7 because of the added pages and stories to the normally thin magazine. The feel of the paper is still newspaperlike because they do not have the funds to print on glossy paper.

i bought Bona for the first time in years bcos of Mshoza, I just wanted to c if our plastic surgeons are that good, and oh my she's looking great bagaetsho, jealous down.

destiny is vey expensive but i always find myself buying it anyway, very informative, it's true Shugs that it always make u want to achieve more, I mean 25 year olds e setse e le di CEO or General Managers

Move has improved so much, i love it especially their simple recipes

Oh, I would by Mama's and Papa's though I've never even heard of the magazine, just because I have a soft spot for Lucas, he loved his wife so much and he is such a good father shem. I still can't ever forget that he played: "Goodbye My Lover - James Blunt" at the wife's funeral and also the fact that after everyone had left the cemetry he remained there for four hours just to say his goodbye in private. I buy mostly because of the stars on the cover but Cosmo always have interesting stories. I used 2 buy Y-mag every month but now I don't see it anymore. I like soccer so I buy Kickoff as well

I am not big into magazine's but because of you BS (talk about marketing for Khanyi) I bought Destiny twice and I fail to read through all the stories. It just does not do it for me. TL is better ......that is my opinion!....

I prefere to read a book than a magazine though, so I would only buy a magazine if they feature a celeb I really like

KTSM u have petty issues yho. Khanyi generally has bad teeth, ive noticed that monied people dont like going to the dentist, if i had a whole lotta money i'd probably subcribe to a dentist, lol. A filling here, a crown there, root canal here...etc.

No comment on Lira's ( i dont care realy), i lurve her hair.

There is only one mag that i buy these days and it TVPLUS...i have around 100 copies of them in my house, i kid you not....coz its just tv and i really dont have time tow atch much tv due to work. I use to love TRUE LOVE when Khanyi was the editor before Busi screwed it up by making it less up-market, their topics are so outdated.

And i buy anything that has Connie Masilo on the cover, so yes - i still have the first edition of Destiny.....
Most mags will shut down thsi yaer due to economic meltdown as AD spend is being cut down. Mags only survive ka ads.

BS: ure such a COSMO freak....i find it to white

Well Well Well, this is really interesting sana.

Ok, i am a True Love Subscriber , and the past 3 covers have been their best, i loved the May one with Papi & Nonhle + their famous mamas.

Destiny, takes the trophy on the list above,classy,sexy,profesional and it says i am destined for bigger and better things so all u lil ones just back off. Carol is one of the most beautiful women apha emzansi.

I am one person that doesnt buy any magazine with Khanyi or Kelly on the cover....bayandidika nje,or maybe nginomona..lol

I love Unathi's dress on the Real cover but i am not so sure about those shoes...she is too African for them...lol

It's the 1st time i am seeing or hearing about Intimacy....and it didnt hook me @ all, so i wouldnt buy it coz from the lil that i saw or read above i aint missing nothing @ all.

i dont buy any magazines, the company paid for all the prescribed magazines, you just add yours in the list if you are new and from the next month you will receive your magazine, we have more that 30 magazines all kinds from fashion to home Decor. and our driver likes i Bona yesizulu he also has it every month.

Oh, I would by Mama's and Papa's though I've never even heard of the magazine, just because I have a soft spot for Lucas, he loved his wife so much and he is such a good father shem. I still can't ever forget that he played: "Goodbye My Lover - James Blunt" at the wife's funeral and also the fact that after everyone had left the cemetry he remained there for four hours just to say his goodbye in private. ...oh yes..then there is soul mag..havent read it in awhile...bcos my frined lives far away (sigh)......i used to love that " its ok to..." page.....
i hope its not discontinued bcos this artcle has inspired me to start investing inntwo of my fav mags of which soul is one of them....(i hate my friend for moving..nxa)..

I have been watching a lot of antm lately...and i still dont quite understand what the big deal is about being in the cover of a megazine....i dont get it at all..

Um Cosmo freak, i buy the mag even if i dont know the cover gal, yes they do repeat stuff from time to time, this month's issue has some 'positions' which have been on few previous cosmo issues, but I still buy it anyway..i have a collection of them, cant borrow to any1 coz ababuyisi,lol,

True love i get for kids' homework cuz thats the only one i dont mind them cutting pictures out of!

Destiny is one inspirational magazine, I'm forever complaining about why do i have to study, blah blah blah, but each time after reading destiny i see reason! Big ups Khanyi.

Cosmo is mdavazo, Elle - ai i dont know i just get it. Mens Health and Best Life - i want to see what these men read (those who do that is!)

Destiny does it for me even though its a bit pricey, amanye ama mag to me are just not doing it. Its like those baby magazines they speak about one thing like how to potty train, how to choose a creche, are vaccines important etc etc.

I think some magazines should go online like the sowetan. they can at least get a bit of my attention and a few cents. better than nothing.
