Things that parents do.......

There are many kinds of relationships. Love, friendship, work related and family related relationships. The relationship I wanna talk about is my relationship with my dad.

My father is a good man who has raised my sisters and me very well. He was not a single parent but he did his part. He is the kind of man who cares about his kids and wants the best for them (which father doesnt?).  He wants us to succeed so bad that he has resorted to lying about stuff. My dad should have been a rich man. Not because he is a hard worker but because he is an intelligent man who gets bored easily and likes to start trouble. he can never go into any partnership and not mess t up. He thinks we should look up to him and want to be like him

Back to the story.

My father thinks or has gotten himself to believe that he has achieved. I cannot tell my dad about my job because he ends up saying he did the same thing when he was at Investec.

Example- I would tell my dad that our company is doing accreditations for the 2010 soccer World cup. My dad would say and I quote" I also did the same thing at Investec"
The sad part about this is that he forces my mom to say Yes I remember. I swear she just says it to get him to shut up.

Anyway, my dad knows I'm studying towards a degree in Industrial Psychology. There goes my Dad and I quote: " You know i also did the same thing when I was your age and at work I was working in HR".

Now this only happens to me because when I asked my sisters about it they had no idea what I was talking about.

It's so bad that my dad has told my hubby all these things- I warned hubby not to talk about what he does at work, because my dad will tell him that he did the exact same thing at Investec.

Some things that my father has been/ done in his lifetime.

1- Driving Instructor
2- Freedom Fighter
3- Recruiter (I used to do recruitment)
4- Trainer ( I want to do a training course next semester)
5- investigator ( there are investigators that i work with).

I love my dad mara haai no! i have asked him to stop and he said he would. Shame he was telling about how he almost played for Pirates back in the day- i'm a pirates supporter.

Lol GML... This is funny and I hope its not a serious lying problem... Are you the last born? maybe you're his favourite and he wants to impress you the most.

My dad and I have a different kind of relationship. Its us against the rest of the family. We even defend each other when we're obviously wrong.

And now????? This is abnormal.

GML
05 May 2009 09:21

@ belz: It doesnt offend me at all. I used to think it's funny but now he does it all the  time. he tells any1 who can listen his stories. He interrupts me everytime I talk because he wants to tell us how he did the same thing. what irritates me the most is that he wants my mom and I to say we remember that he was everything he says he was. And if you say No you dont remember or even tell him that he is lying, he gets so upset and he would say an I qoute: " you cant say you dont remember or argue with me about something that I have years of experience in"

It's become so boring and so irritating that I just avoid talking to him about work all together.

@belz: My dad  has never had much of a relationship with my sisters and I, especially me. I am the most outspoken one followed by my baby sister. So  I was always vocal about what I hated and liked about him. He never really got it until I just started avoiding him. Throughout my late high school years I just avoided having a conversation with him. Not because of his lying (it only started about a year ago) but because I just couldn't stand him. So when my sisters and I decided it's time to mend fences with him, he thought it would be funny for him to make us laugh by lying ( we did laugh) until we got tired of not being able to tell him about stuff that happens in our lives.

the lying was a way for him to get us to laugh with him (which we never did before).

belz

the lying was a way for him to get us to laugh with him (which we never did before>>> then maybe ask your  mom to tell him you are fine with him now and he does not need to act, sad thing is he seems to have gotten used to it and its gonna be hard not to do it, he is your dad, accept him as Lady D mentioned, irritating as he is.
