The mere mention of the word sexy in todays modern day society elicits thoughts of coolness, in fashion, hot and to do with the in thing.
In a more literal sense, one cannot be blamed if skimpily clad girls come to mind, or explicit lyrics of Justin Timberlakes Im bringing sexy back come to mind . The dictionary definition of sexy explains that sexy has to do with the act of sexual intercourse, hence the sexy sway of the hips, or the sexy bedroom eyes.
But, nowadays, the word sexy is bandied about and one is left feeling slightly confused when a pair of shoes are labeled as sexy! Maybe I should rephrase that, no one bats an eyelid when a pair of shoes which are meant to be placed on maybe stinky, cracked nailed feet are branded as sexy.
Nor when a radio station is marketed as Gauteng Provinces sexiest frequency.
Do the above mentioned have anything to do with the physical act of sexual intercourse? Of course not, one may think! Call me stupid or deliberately ignorant but I think that something is amiss in the vocabulary norms of society. Should not items associated with sex be linked to sexy?
The mass obsession with sexy has been glorified through the media, social movements such as the sexual revolution of the 1960s and frankly the moral degeneration evident in today&s society.
Not only are these to blame but also the individual;s willingness to use the word sexy to describe items, feelings and people. One knows that sexy has to do with sexual intercourse then why freely label a hairstyle as sexy?
In my opinion some people have been brainwashed into believing that ; is an adjective hence the incorrect use of the word.
The multiple (note:various)connotations of the wrong(note; incorrect) utilisation (note; use) of sexy are that the youth are influenced by such language especially through music, television and fashion.
For example: Sixteen year old Jane pesters her parents to buy her the latest Hannah Montana dvd all because she can sing and dance sexily, is that what all girls should aspire to do at that age?
Theres 12 year old Josh, who cannot help but watch Mtv, it has all the coolest people, who have women draped all over them. Josh simply cant wait to go and try the latest bumpin and gridin moves on his next door neighbour, 10 year old Anna.
15 year old Busi, is bristling with excitement to see her favourite star, Justin Timberlake she hopes he will be generous and share the secret to bagging a fine boyfriend, he is after all bringing sexy back.
Six year old Myrna is amazed that mommy is looking for her kitten heels.
Arent her and daddy suppose to wait before shes asleep? She hopes mommy doesn find her heels because she doesnt want another baby brother or sister for that matter.
In all the above sexy has metamorphisized into an acceptable word that everybody uses, even children!
