Tribute To Lelethu Lumkwana...

This week is not starting off on a good note...

I was very shocked on Monday when I received a call informing me that "They found Lelethu...."
That alone spoke volumes but I still asked
..."what do you mean 'they found her"?
The caller told me she was found in her pool......I was shocked! It just seemed like such a cruel death. Besides, she was only 24....too young to die. She still had so much to offer SA and I really don't understand why we keep losing talented young people like this.
God, we know you have to take what's yours but we ask you to slow the pace down...please Bawo.

I didn't know Lelethu Lumkwana that well but I'm still saddened by her passing....
I first met her when we went to Nigeria
(African Movie Academy Awards) in April this year. I knew her name, having read some of her stuff in True Love magazine and later when she was appointed the editor of True Love Babe and I knew she was one of the judges at the Miss SA Teen last year but that was about it....

Melanie, Lelethu & me...

She was really a sweet person...so calm, so stylish and damn beautiful!
I remember telling her that she would make a great talkshow host because I just thought she was so warm, smart and really a fun and down to earth person. I discovered this just in the week we spent in Lagos/Abuja so I can only imagine how her close friends and family feel about her passing. My deepest condolences to all of you guys, her family, her mom, her 3 year old boy and all her close friends. Akuhlanga lungehlanga bafethu.

The shocking news only reached the area she grew up in Mdantsane only yesterday and its one of those incidents that leave you with a lot of unanswered questions and the realization that life is simply too damn short. As the only child to her mom, no one can even imagine what she maybe going through but with the strength of God I hope she can heal.

For her mom’s and little boy’s sake I hope the speculations don’t turn into a circus and hope they are given the space and time to process and heal.

To the Lumkwana family, may you find solace and peace in the realization that your daughter is now in God’s realm. My sincere condolences.

This is one of the saddest and most unjust things to have happened. It is still not known what exactly took place because she went for an early morning swim and ended up floating in the complex pool. I can only imagine what hetr mother and family must be going through. The people who were close to her- her friends, are visibly shaken. She was only 24. How unjust!

She is from NU 17. I met this girl in 1998, in the next two years  after that we were very close and did everything together. Even though she was  3years my junior, I looked up to her,so inspiring and truly stylish. She loved creative writing and I was not suprised by her chosen career path, it was what she loved . I always knew she was going to shine.

She was there at the most memorable times of my life , my matric dance etc.in actual fact she designed the dress .

I remember the first day I met her mom and I told her that I was also an only child and had a single parents. U Mama ka Lelethu wabe esiyala that sithi amathemba oomama bethu and yonke into abayenzayo bayenzela thina . I can only imagine what her mom is going through now.

I had not spoken to her for years and since March when I moved to Jo'burg I always thought  I would call her but kept on postponing and now this...

All I can say is ,"Each and everyday we should give it all our best, dont forget to tell the people you love how much they matter to you". You know yesterday another good friend of mine at work passed away. She went to see a dentist on tuesday, yesterday morning we were sitting outside here at work and she told me that she thinks the dentist must have done something wrong to her tooth because the pain was unbearable . When we got back to the office she made an appointment to see the dentist  .She went around 12 o' clock apparently they had to operate and she never woke up... just like that. Hayi people I think we should pray like there is no tomorrow  ,no one should die like that and God does not want things like this happening to us. He is a loving father. It is the devil and God has given us all authority.

You know the bible says :" My people perish for lack of knowledge".

Let us pray for the people in our sphere of contact because God is trusting us for those souls.

Eish this is sad. Last saturday i buried my beloved couzin. I do understand what the family and loved ones are going through. They say pain is love, to feel pain that means we have loved, but if we dont feel pain, we havent yet loved.  I always comfort myself with this words

Akekho umntu osisimakade somhlaba
Sohamba sonke nangona kunzima
Kodwa lets rejoice in knowing her (him)
Lets thank God for esiboleke yena
We are sad that she is gone, but may his will be done

I cried until my tears dried
I pointed fingers until I had more enemies than friends
I cursed everyone including the Lord
I drank soo much that I forgot my name

But
I forgot all the good times we had
I forgot that we all have to travel that road
I forgot that nobody knows but God
I forgot that, its his will and it will be done

I lost a brother and I hid away from my creator. But the creator came and found me

He didnt give me my brother back
He reminded me of all he was to me
God helped me achieve all my brother had wanted me to
He stood by me and comforted me.

He is the best, lets trust in him, and all our tears will be removed.

From a very shattered heart

We are awating olwethu usuku, but we will pray for the living and the late
so that when he comes to collect, we shall be 2geda again.

I cried until my tears dried
I pointed fingers until I had more enemies than friends
I cursed everyone including the Lord
I drank soo much that I forgot my name

But
I forgot all the good times we had
I forgot that we all have to travel that road
I forgot that nobody knows but God
I forgot that, its his will and it will be done

I lost a brother and I hid away from my creator. But the creator came and found me

He didnt give me my brother back
He reminded me of all he was to me
God helped me achieve all my brother had wanted me to
He stood by me and comforted me.

He is the best, lets trust in him, and all our tears will be removed.

From a very shattered heart

LELETHU LUMKWANA
25/01/1984 – 03/11/2008

A memorial service for Lelethu Lumkwana, writer, editor, traveller, friend, sister, daughter and mother to Zenande will be held at His People Christian Church, 20a 7th Avenue, Parktown North, Johannesburg, on Friday, 7 November at 2pm. Her friends, colleagues and all who were touched by her wonderful spirit are invited to come and celebrate her extraordinary life.

To celebrate Leza's individuality and love for self-expression, the family would like everyone to come dressed in whatever way they feel best represents her spirit.

Instead of flowers, we would prefer people to write a letter, dedication, memory, poem and anything else that will preserve her memory for her son, Zenande.
A creative soul, Leza lived her life to the fullest – and this showed in everything that she did. The former editor of True Love Babe had previously worked as features writer for Cosmopolitan and True Love magazine. Prior to her untimely death, she was the editor of Campus Times, TL.com and a freelance writer for a number of other publications. Leza's online presence on Studio 83, as well as her blogs, Couture Conversations and on Gusto Projects will be sadly missed. Her dream to open her own media company was about to be realised.

Leza's love for Africa was limitless and fuelled by mountainous passion. True to her independent self, she went to the Lake of the Stars Music Festival in Malawi on her own – and loved it! Botswana and Nigeria were also honoured to feel her presence. Over and above travelling, her dream was to break borders and create a collective voice for artists, writers and other creatives across the continent, and to the rest of the world.

Twenty-four-year-old Leza passed away on the afternoon of 3 November 2008, when paramedics failed to resuscitate her after a swimming pool accident.
If you had had the opportunity to have met her, you would have recognised a truly beautiful and compassionate soul. Leza was a dreamer, whose thoughts and actions were often more profound than her young age.
She will be sadly missed.

The funeral will be held in East London on 15 November 2008. More details to follow.
