Thank you everyone, for your responses.

To be honest… I was overwhelmed with frustration over the way so many people reacted to this cartoon and weighed down at how sensitive people can be when it comes to certain individuals. That is the reason I did this article yesterday but couldn’t write much and just waited for bloggers’ reactions and opinions.

Now I suppose its old news… But personally I think this sketch is ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUS! Yet controversial.
I have to admit, after having a good hard laugh, I also thought, for a little while there, that maybe Zapiro has gone a bit too far but then I thought he’s been doing this long enough to know how far to go…

I’m not a Zuma fan and I doubt I’ll ever be…but missing the humour in this drawing is not only ignorant, but its arrogant too..

Jonathan Shapiro is a great cartoonist and one of South Africa’s very few high-quality journalists. He’s been cartooning issues in South Africa and around the world for a very long time and he knows exactly which buttons to press...that my only words to him right now are... "well done! good job! they needed to see exactly how society sees them.. and no better way to do it than this... Look at them, running up and down...hi hi hi hi hi...now lets work on next week's graphic...hi hi hi hi.... "

He always used to draw Manto’s face as a garlic bulb and everyone found it funny, right?? Now when its Zuma raping Lady Justice it’s referred to as “racist”

Black people should get over themselves… Just because you were hurt by one Verwoerd twenty years ago, it doesn’t mean every white man is out to kill you.

It just goes to show how LSM 1 our country’s politics actually are compared to the rest of the world… Barak Obama’s face was put on Paris Hilton’s body not so long ago… Was that racist?

The only way to describe the ANC’s reaction is that it is defense mechanism they know how true the cartoon is, and fully understand that it is a true reflection of the present state of affairs but I suppose Nnete e a baba.
We are going on and on about how it was “distasteful and borders defamation of character” that we are missing the message in the cartoon. Isn’t it just sad how menial and petty our so called politicians can be? I actually wont be surprised if Jonathan can be found dead one of these days… yes, they’ve sworn “to eliminate remnants of counter-revolution

PRESENT I think that this cartoon is a great reflection of what is actually going on in our justice system & if things carry on this way we'll c that prominent people in our society are giong to go scott free and this is giong directly da opposite direction of w@ our constitution is aiming for. yes its funny but i feel that these things should be taken seriously becoz uzuma might just become the next president and do we realy need one who now seems as if he is giong the mugabe root as in if his charges are dropped he would have played our justice system and the people enormusly becoz he should be facing up to the allegations against him and not promoting the fact that the people want the charges dropped he shouldnt be condoning this. becoz there r persons who actually feel that they should kill, fast, go to sangomas because of a man whom that they think is GOD  and gonna bring them out of the hell holes that they are in i doubt it coz cum on wat umbeki didnt do or didnt do well what makes u think u zuma will do better. As a proud ANC member and a supporter of whom-ever we feel should represent us as the next president. i feel that the ANC has lost the mandate given to them by the voters and supporters. We are concerned more about what the people say about us, rather than leading thi country to teh best of our abilities. This cartoon is an eye-opener to all of us, that we are going around in circles and killing (eliminating) what ever we have achieved. If ANC lead with integrity and consideration to all humans, they shouldnt be worried about the cartoon, but rather the message behind it.

I dont see anything wrong when using Zuma in reference to rape coz his surname is ZUMA which in Xhosa MEANS to rape, or (have consentual sex with someone who isnt your partner).

The ANC must stop being ignorant, over-protective (for lack of a better word), and they shudnt over-react, na for umsuzo lo.

Hayi ke, after waiting for what feels like forever for Carino's comments, i'll post what i think.

We have become too sensitive a society that we even have time to analyse a depiction of reality through a cartoonist's eyes. The justice system has always been represented by a female figure & what better way to send out a statement that really SHOWS us how Zuma and his people are trying to bypass the justice system, than by a rape scene. I don't think this pic would have made the country sit and up and think if it was showing Zuma ducking and diving with the woman chasing him. We'd be laughing if anything.

I think Zapiro is very brave that's for sure but i doubt he's that stupid as to create something he doesn't believe in. Even more stupid would be the editor of the paper in which this cartoon appeared.

I am generally apathetic about Zuma and anything Zumaesque and the last thing i want to see is headline after headline after headline over this cartoon. The more bad guy he comes out 'smelling' the more frustrated i become that this man is about to be the next president.

The last time i checked everyone had a right to an opinion and Zapiro is expressing his the best way he knows how.

What Julious said in response to this cartoon actually made sense.  The boy can think after all, he said that it depicts African leaders as irresponsible for his full response log on to The Times.  I have said it before that Zuma is a leader and therefore should be respected.  He might have done questionable deeds but my understanding is that leaders should be respected whether you like it or not.

Today on Kaya fm. Zapiro was like he is not a racist and he feels like he has to hide just as he did those days and he has not been threatened as yet.  I believe that this freedom of speech thing is being taken too far.

too lazy to go the website for a full response. He's a hypocrite for uttering irresponsible statements on the one hand and wanting to defend the honour of African leaders.

Clutching at straws is all his response smells of. He'll say anything to get the masses to agree with him. Anything at all. If the race card doesn't work then let's look at the "continental" card.

Okay, maybe i will go to the Times page to read it afterall.

From the website:

The cartoon shows that the principles she represents — fair and equal administration of the law, without corruption, avarice, prejudice or favour — are about to be violated. It is a truly terrifying image.

The immediate reaction of the alliance was to accuse Shapiro of depicting Zuma as a rapist.

But that’s a shallow interpretation of the cartoon.

Shapiro has encapsulated in one drawing the biggest threat to South Africa’s future — that our justice system will be the sacrificial lamb offered up on the altar of “our saviour”, Zuma.

The alliance has openly attacked the judiciary, including our highest court, and has announced national strikes and other protests should Zuma’s corruption trial proceed.

They have called for a “political solution” to the criminal case against Zuma.

Their willingness to “kill for Zuma”, to strike for Zuma and to mortgage our democracy for Zuma is frightening.

Zuma might be a bit of a joke, but what’s being done in his name is definitely not funny.

Toxic
10 Sep 2008 04:47

Malema described the cartoon as “racist” and said it exposed Zapiro’s “attitude not only about black leaders, but about black people in general”.

The ANC said the cartoon reflected Sunday Times editor Mondli Makhanya’s “dictatorial nature” and said he had “abused press freedom”.

The cartoon has drawn strong reaction from the ANC and its partners, who immediately linked the cartoon to the 2006 rape trial in which Zuma was accused of raping a young woman, but was later acquitted.

Malema said: “What Zapiro fails to understand is that Zuma was never found guilty of rape.”

Shapiro said linking the cartoon to the rape trial missed the point.

“It depicts that the justice system is being raped by Zuma and his alliance partners.

“The cartoon is about the justice system and the attacks that have been launched on it [by Zuma and the alliance partners]. What sparked it [the cartoon] had zip, nada, to do with the rape trial,” he said.

Shapiro is currently being sued by Zuma for cartoons that appeared during the rape trial. The initial claim against him was for R15-million, but this has been reduced to R2-million.

“If he thought that [the lawsuit] is going to intimidate me, then he must think again,” Shapiro said.

Vavi, who is known to be a fan of Zapiro’s work and has several of his cartoons displayed on the walls leading to his office in Cosatu House, said the cartoon had left him “shocked, devastated and lost for words”.

He said: “Zapiro has equated us to rapists. There is no basis for this cartoon. What is he saying to the world? Is he saying Zuma is a rapist? This cartoon goes way beyond acceptable levels of freedom of expression. While we battle rape in this country, he goes and does this!”

In a joint statement the ANC, its Youth League and the SA Communist Party accused Zapiro and Makhanya of abusing press freedom.

“We have never attacked the judiciary, but criticised unfair treatment of our president. This we did in a normal public discourse of a democratic society. There can, therefore, be no justification for such unwarranted insults on our leadership by the Sunday Times.”

The statement also called into question Makhanya’s credibility as an editor.

“We can only hope that the newspaper will find a suitable leadership other than the ranting dictator who finds joy in manipulating the truth. The ANC is keen that the public should get Makhanya to answer for abuse of press freedom by the Sunday Times.”

Makhanya said the cartoon portrayed the recent vicious attacks on the judiciary and legal system by Zuma and his allies.

“I wish there was a similar level of outrage about the labelling of the judiciary as counter-revolutionaries and the description of the highest court in the land as a shebeen,” he said.

Makhanya was referring to Congress of SA Students secretary Buda Tsotetsi’s recent comparison of the Constitutional Court with a shebeen, and Mantashe’s labelling of the court’s judges as counter- revolutionary.

Cosatu’s Patrick Craven said the cartoon was “in extremely bad taste” and questioned why a woman had been used to depict the justice system.

Shapiro said: “Lady [of] Justice is a universally recognised figure. Cosatu is simply pretending not to know that.”

Vavi and Malema said though they were not happy with Zapiro’s latest work, the alliance was not planning to take any action against him.

“We do need a Zapiro to express himself, but he must not agitate the masses,” Vavi said.

Ditto to your edited article.

I found the cartoon disturbing in the sense it’s making the rest of SA think *those who don’t have their heads so far up Zuma’s ass* about the future and the reality that we are being held ransom by a few individuals who are running SA into anarchy and in their minds there is absolutely nothing anyone can do. With force they can do anything they want and no one can stop them.

@Mathaz, respect is earned, not given.

Zapiro has even drawn some unflattering cartoons about Mbeki and there was not even a whinge from the ANC ranks.

Julius Malema threatened to kill those who do not bow to ANC demands, that’s freedom of speech taken to far. Whether or not that was taken out of context.

Why dont they want to let him go to trial, stand in front of the court of law and prove his innocence?? like he did with the rape trial?? WHY?

As long as they are black, let no white man point out the bad they are doing and let them dare not crack a joke about them in your presence....that kinda thing? Like,WTF?

distasteful and borders defamation of character- @ Carino, to be honest, i think Mr Zuma did this (defamation of character) all by himself. And we as his supporters are making things worse by not giving him the honest criticism.  We as the ANC (myself, Malema, etc) are the people that are trusted by the president. We are his right wing, if we mislead him into thinking he is always right, we are actually misleading ourselves and mostly misleading the people that have faith in us.

Also I think people should stop using "racism" as a scapegoat for everything. If we call this racism, what are we calling Mondli (the editor), is he now a coconut or an uncle Tom. if you ask me I would say he is just an honest guy, just like Jonathan Shapiro is.

@Sweety my baby-they have to use a womans body being hurt to illustrate the point. as a woman, that pic didn't sit well with, i get ur point, but on the contrary I wud say that using the woman there was the best thing ever. We as women in SA in the last year have shown gullibility and naive-ness. Mr Zuma during his trial said somethings ngabafazi that showed his lack of respect for the specie (i.e when u wear short kanga u are asking for it). Secondly he has many wives, he risked their lives by shagging an hiv+ woman. Yet when we go to Polokwane, we as womens League turn our backs on the man (Mbeki) who gave us recognition as women (look at his cabinet, and even his deputy) and voted for the men who has no shame in treating us like second best.

My point is Baleka Mbete (if thats her representing justice system ), shud be careful, she is very close to Zuma at the moment. if this man disrespects a portion of women out there, what makes her think he wont disrepectct her someday. ( I am of course looking at the picture literally)

@ TDC-ANC must stop the crying the do because they are the creators of all this isht. You are so right my brother, we as the ANC have the "power" to make things work, but we choose to use that power to our own gains, to make things worse and we also use that power to stand up in huge crowds and fart a lot of *bleep!*, coz according to me what (Malema, Vavi etc) have been saying these past few weeks is a lot of *bleep!* and shouldnt be tolerated.

These people represent us (our thoughts and opinions), for them to go out there and embarass us like this sends out teh message that we are all idiots, which is not true. They create their own mandate and according to me its unacceptable. We are loyal to this organisation, and to have representatives like them, its a disgrace. you too Tony Yengeni, Blade Nzimande etc I have a thing or two to say to you, then you can eliminate me. I would rather die for an idea that would live, than live for an idea that would die, coz clear thinking that Zuma will be a great president, that "idea" is dead already./

Main Entry: 1dit·to
Function: noun
Inflected Form(s): plural dittos
Etymology: Italian ditto, detto, past participle of dire to say, from Latin dicere — more at diction
Date: circa 1639
1 : a thing mentioned previously or above —used to avoid repeating a word —often symbolized by inverted commas or apostrophes

andi01

@ Carino ;Doesnt ditto mean a repeat, now are you saying  I have repeated something thas been said, if so i apologise coz I didnt have the chance to go through all teh response.

carino
10 Sep 2008 06:42

dit·to (dt)
n. pl. dit·tos
1. The same as stated above or before.
2. A duplicate; a copy.
3. A pair of small marks ( " ) used to indicated that the word, phrase, or figure given above is to be repeated.
adv.
As before.
tr.v. dit·toed, dit·to·ing, dit·tos
To duplicate (a document, for example).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[Italian dialectal, past participle of Italian dire, to say, from Latin dcere; see deik- in Indo-European roots.]
Word History: Ditto, which at first glance seems a handy and insignificant sort of word, actually has a Roman past, for it comes from dictus, "having been said," the past participle of the verb dcere, "to say." In Italian dcere became dire and dictus became detto, or in the Tuscan dialect ditto. Italian detto or ditto meant what said does in English, as in the locution "the said story." Thus the word could be used in certain constructions to mean "the same as what has been said"; for example, having given the date December 22, one could use 26 detto or ditto for 26 December. The first recorded use of ditto in English occurs in such a construction in 1625. The sense "copy" is an English development, first recorded in 1818. Ditto has even become a trademark for a duplicating machine.

About Zuma, it is not about being guilty or not, but "why put yourself in the position" whereby people question ur leadership skills. Yes he was acquited of rape, but the fact that he associated himself with this scandal and controversy will always be a stain in his life. "hello this person is running for presidency". And also this case is over, he is clean, but that doesnt mean we cant "joke" about it.

The corruption case: the ANC camp is confussing us, we dont know who to support anymore. Zuma says " I would have my day in court to prove my innocence{, yet his best friends say he wont go to court. What has he to loose, the tax payers will be paying his bills mos. I think "My future president" and fellow comrade should go to court and clear his name, like he did with the rape saak. Even afetr that, we will still joke about it, whether she likes it or not.

Jesse, Jesse who? read this and you'll be wiser because the man who got wiser late in his life said it! Bullard himself. this doesn't go against any ground rules, so please don't remove my post!

I used to hunt when I lived in England. I wasn’t a good enough equestrian to stay on a horse long enough to take part in that most noble of English pursuits, a fox hunt, so I joined the Surrey and North Sussex Beagles and ran across muddy fields with a whole lot of other Sloane Rangers chasing frightened hares with a pack of beagles.

There is something about a pack hunt that is tremendously exciting, although probably not for the quarry. When hounds are drawing for a scent and put up a fugitive fox, stag or hare all hell breaks loose. The huntsman sounds his horn with a long, mournful tone that roughly translates as “let’s go kill something”. The “whipper in” brings the entire pack of hounds onto the scent and the chase begins. One frightened, defenceless animal pursued across the fields by a bloodthirsty mob in the name of a day’s sport. At the kill it used to be traditional to “blood” the youngest member of the hunt by smearing the dead animal’s still warm blood on the face of that lucky participant.

I was reminded of all this by the furore surrounding last Sunday’s Zapiro cartoon of Jacob Zuma unzipping his trousers in anticipation of raping Madame Justice who is being held down by some of his more terrifying supporters. The clear message in the cartoon was that this was a gang bang and after JZ had finished the others would be climbing upon Madame Justice for a quick knee trembler.

Many feel that this was Zapiro at his best and there is no doubt that South Africa’s best known cartoonist knows how to make his point. However, although I am usually a staunch supporter of freedom of expression I have to express my revulsion at this cartoon which goes way beyond the bounds of decency.

When a serious crime is committed the law takes into account the mental state of the person who committed the crime. For example, in the case of murder the wrong act (actus reus) has to be accompanied by the wrong thought (mens rea) for the charge of murder to stick. If the intention to kill wasn’t present then the charge may well be manslaughter. In order to properly evaluate the Zapiro cartoon we need to understand the thought processes of both the cartoonist and the bibulous editor of the Sunday Times.

When I was still working at the Sunday Times I had a huge showy desk for several years right outside the editor’s office. On Thursday the honchos would start to think about what was going to go into that week’s paper. They would unashamedly pick a victim and decide to put the boot in, irrespective of the accuracy of their information. A favourite victim was Jacob Zuma but others included Ronald Suresh Roberts and Jake White.

Mondli Makhanya, the Jorrocks of the newsroom, would sound the hunting horn and we would all go off to write some poisonous invective about that week’s chosen quarry, comfortable in the knowledge that, even if we were sued, the case would take ages to come to court and the shareholders would pay anyway. That’s why the term “journalistic integrity” is an oxymoron.

Jonathan Shapiro needed no editorial bidding to put the boot into Jacob Zuma. I met Shapiro at the Franschhoek Literary Festival earlier this year and I have never in my life met a man so consumed by hatred… on this occasion hatred for me, hatred for Zuma and a liberal dash of well justified self loathing.

In a panel session Shapiro had a go at me for “licking Jacob Zuma’s Guccis” after I had apologized for any offence he had taken in columns I had written. Z
