who do you have breakfast with?

If this topic has been discussed before (which I’m sure it has) please accept my humble apologies for writing a similar article. It’s just that i've recently rekindled my love for radio. there was a period whereby i felt that many radio personalities were too mediocre for my liking and they were not worth me lending them my ear. But of lately, because of the competitive nature, high-quality, and work ethic of some DJ’s, I find myself indecisive of which radio station to keep my dial tuned-into. I’m just going to mention a few breakfast shows that I have listened to, but feel free to add the ones that I did not mention.

Here are my observations.

Metro

Wow! The arrival of Matona and her crew (Bob and Segale) has resulted in some much needed upgrading to the station.
The most noticeable and appreciated change for me, was the introduction of Thomas as the host of the breakfast show. The show oozes quality, good content, exceptional radio personalities, and a well balanced genre of music (although there is room for improvement, on the local front).
I often find myself leaving late for work because I can’t get enough of BWT. Whether it’s him or Lupi that’s behind the success of the show, I couldn’t care less because they provide me with all the element of a first-class, entertaining, informative and exciting radio show.
I love Lupi’s candidness, and don’t be fooled by BBK’s typical Zulu farm boy character because the brother is well-informed. Naked’s choice of music and his one-liners always leave me yearning for more…
Basically breakfast with Thomas is on another new level and that’s why I choose to wake up (to them/ with them). Did I mention Regina????

Ukhozi

This is the biggest radio station in Umzansi but their reshuffling and poaching of top-notch DJ’s from other radio stations has not worked to their advantage. I lost interest in their breakfast show about a year ago, when Sbu joined the station. Don’t get me wrong, I adore Sbu, but he just didn’t fit in with their set up and style of broadcasting. It then went from bad to worse when they moved Linda Sibiya from afternoon drive to morning drive. Pairing up a person of his caliber with Sbonga Zungu was suicidal on their part. She’s just to “flat” (a lack of a better word) for a breakfast show. She should present the kiddies or women show. I find that she is often overshadowed by Mr Magic.

Gagasi

It is affectionately known as the “sound of the city” and the Y-f.m of KZN. Only on its second year of inception, this station has basically taken over in KZN. While they have lost some of their DJ’s to Ukhozi, the station is still one of the fastest growing stations in the country, boosting a listener-ship of an estimated 1, 6 million. Alex and Mamgo balance each other out perfectly and I love the daily prank calls.

Others

With Gagasi gaining daily popularity, it is questionable whether East Coast Radio is still Durban’s no 1 as they have publicly stated over the years.
Being a fan of Gareth Cliff, I find myself tuning in to listen to his witty comments, once in a while. Unfortunately I am unable to listen to Y, so I can’t really comment but I hear that u Sbu is holding it down.

Well I do not have a favourite breakfast show but way back in my day it used to be DJ Fresh, Thato and Aneesa on Y FM.  Oh i miss those days when radio was radio.  I used to love that jingle that they played before Aneesa could announce the traffic, it used to go like... traffic.....Aneesa, traffic ...Aneesa.  Thato, hello this is  Thato and both Fresh and Thato would go like aah.  (Those who used to listen to this show would know what i'm talking about).

I also lyk gareth but i just can't handle the music!

i think sbonga complements Linda's hyperactive persona very well, and I like how she doesnt just let him get away with some of his conservative comments....(i aslo like him as well)   I just dont think you should have abo-phaphios abayi-two ekseni...kunesdina....  but I love their show

as for igagasi....I'm not feeling uMamgo..sometimes when they do these topics, angazi I just feel like it lead people to belive that they have the answeres  when they are not realy qualified that much to give proffesional advices

unathi and Thomas....naahhhh...Glenzito does it for me ALL THE TIME

thats my two cents

I'm 100% proudly G99point5 aka Gagasi listener :-) Hey KAKAPANA...Ur only mentioned Alex & Mamgo and left out Kinishanduka how could u? Tell me, is the guy really a foreigner? What about their news readers especialy uVusie Zondi...The crew is damn tight! I don't have a prob with their music. Latest and classic songs, i'm so into that! Lately they're repeating same prank calls but i realised they've just moved into their new buildings! 1.6listeners AND STIL COUNTING!

Mina, I'm a channel flipper of note. Things is, i stay 15 minutes drive from work, 25 in the unlikely event that there is traffic. In that time, i switch btw, the following dials as programmed on my radio:
1. Phalaphala
2. 702
3. Highveld
4. Yfm
5. Metro FM
6. Khaya FM.

The sad thing is that although its only a short time i have to listen, sometimes i have to put on a CD, since nothing is appealing to me...so sad.

Mina I hardly ever listen to breakfast shows *ngivele ngisuthe kwi Metro on Sundays with Paul, Eddy & Wilson, and that's enough radio 4 me......LOL*

"as for igagasi....I'm not feeling uMamgo..sometimes when they do these topics, angazi I just feel like it lead people to belive that they have the answeres when they are not realy qualified that much to give proffesional advices"
I so agree with u abou uMamgo we Sponono, she does act like she is a professional and then abntu seem to buy in2 whatever advise she gives. As for u-Alex, I feel that he might as well be doing the show alone coz he always get the most time to speak on Air and I am glad Big Pun (Pumlani Dube) moved to uKhozi coz iGagasi worships Alex Mthiyane too much!!!

Breakfast with Thomas - eish iyangicika, that's all I can say.

"i think sbonga complements Linda's hyperactive persona very well, and I like how she doesnt just let him get away with some of his conservative comments....(i aslo like him as well)"
Linda Sibiya is the man, he sometimes gets too carried away with his motivations but still beno Sbongo they are doing a fair job on Vuka Mzansi. But ke the thing uKhozi has to work on is the flow of muisic, this habbit of rocking a maskandi song, staright after a slow jam, hayi mani that's not on!!!!!

kakapana, it depends which tribe the taxi driver belongs to coz if its the Limpopo taxi drivers it will be oPhalaphala ne Mitsweding. if ngoMageba it will be Ukhozi fosho, and if its the genge encane yama allstars they will rock iYFM and torture me ngo Sbuda. So i have variety, grand-grand i listen to the Mark Pilgrim on 94.7 for iTOP40 on saturdays.

My Breakfast Shows.
1. The DJ Sbu Breakfast Show is the biggest breakfast show on radio in Mzansi fullstop. Loved it when he called Gagasi live on Yfm to ask them why they not playing the Not in our Lifetime song because he is on it. Then when on hold they play you Classic FM hi hi hi hi. The music compiler litteraly hanged up on him after admitting they cant play it because of him.
2. Ashifa Breakfast Show on Capricorn FM am not from Limpopo but that radio station is HOT....
3. Breakfast with Thomas, I think they were in the comfort zone for too long and this thing of Lupi playing Regina eheheheheh....theya re my 3rd choice.

I tune it to Ukhozi at 6:45 just to hear Linda's motivation, when I used to ride in a taxi I would not get out of the house until I heard him but find him a bit boring these days. and yes nonny I agree the maskandi after a slow jam just does not sound right.

The problem I have with breakfast shows is their prank calls, it just does not do it for me, when they do that I just switch to something else. They are terrible and dont find them funny anymore

Oooh radio in the morning, let me see....when I get up at 5:00 am to switch  my geyser on, I tune in to Phat Joe until 6:00. From 6:00 to 07:00 is strictly Jeremy and his crew on Highveld stereo. On my way to work from 7:05 to 7:35,  I alternate between 94.7, 95.9 and 96.4(rarely get here or get stuck here). I once gave Sbu (99.2) 2minutes of my time and it was enough to last me a lifetime...torture!!!
