If this topic has been discussed before (which I’m sure it has) please accept my humble apologies for writing a similar article. It’s just that i've recently rekindled my love for radio. there was a period whereby i felt that many radio personalities were too mediocre for my liking and they were not worth me lending them my ear. But of lately, because of the competitive nature, high-quality, and work ethic of some DJ’s, I find myself indecisive of which radio station to keep my dial tuned-into. I’m just going to mention a few breakfast shows that I have listened to, but feel free to add the ones that I did not mention.
Here are my observations.
Metro
Wow! The arrival of Matona and her crew (Bob and Segale) has resulted in some much needed upgrading to the station.
The most noticeable and appreciated change for me, was the introduction of Thomas as the host of the breakfast show. The show oozes quality, good content, exceptional radio personalities, and a well balanced genre of music (although there is room for improvement, on the local front).
I often find myself leaving late for work because I can’t get enough of BWT. Whether it’s him or Lupi that’s behind the success of the show, I couldn’t care less because they provide me with all the element of a first-class, entertaining, informative and exciting radio show.
I love Lupi’s candidness, and don’t be fooled by BBK’s typical Zulu farm boy character because the brother is well-informed. Naked’s choice of music and his one-liners always leave me yearning for more…
Basically breakfast with Thomas is on another new level and that’s why I choose to wake up (to them/ with them). Did I mention Regina????
Ukhozi
This is the biggest radio station in Umzansi but their reshuffling and poaching of top-notch DJ’s from other radio stations has not worked to their advantage. I lost interest in their breakfast show about a year ago, when Sbu joined the station. Don’t get me wrong, I adore Sbu, but he just didn’t fit in with their set up and style of broadcasting. It then went from bad to worse when they moved Linda Sibiya from afternoon drive to morning drive. Pairing up a person of his caliber with Sbonga Zungu was suicidal on their part. She’s just to “flat” (a lack of a better word) for a breakfast show. She should present the kiddies or women show. I find that she is often overshadowed by Mr Magic.
Gagasi
It is affectionately known as the “sound of the city” and the Y-f.m of KZN. Only on its second year of inception, this station has basically taken over in KZN. While they have lost some of their DJ’s to Ukhozi, the station is still one of the fastest growing stations in the country, boosting a listener-ship of an estimated 1, 6 million. Alex and Mamgo balance each other out perfectly and I love the daily prank calls.
Others
With Gagasi gaining daily popularity, it is questionable whether East Coast Radio is still Durban’s no 1 as they have publicly stated over the years.
Being a fan of Gareth Cliff, I find myself tuning in to listen to his witty comments, once in a while. Unfortunately I am unable to listen to Y, so I can’t really comment but I hear that u Sbu is holding it down.
