Was Mangope a punk?

Lucas Manyane Mangope former president aka tautona ya Bophutatswana from 1977 -1994. Some say he was a visionary, some a punk, a looser and a sell out.

After last nights sabc 2 doccie on Madiba, I asked myself the question what was/is mangope to me now?Cause in the doccie titled Mandela the peacemaker,it chronicled how Mandela manouvered and negotiated a peaceful settlement for the 1st great truely democratic vote in sa . The doccie touched on all the issues that led to 1994 but somehow skipped to mention the AWB incident and the former homelands refusing to participate in the general election.

Anyhow im dgressing a bi,t Mangope was responsible for such things as creating Mmabatho the town, Bop tv, radio bop, Radio Mmabatho (now known as Motsweding fm) , the mmabana artsand cultural centre basically what the former homeland was. That produced talents like Nothemba Madumo,Bob Mabena, Tich Matez, Felica Mabuza and many more
A good education system that saw Unibo now Uniwest produce good quality graduate who worked mostly for the civil service and are doing quite well in the new South Africa. Then him and his face fmous Madormkraga ( the dmocrats) where also very good at living the good life at the expense of the public and deciding for the public instead of talking to them but yet they left a very impressive infrastructure in the former bop region and mafikeng when they finalywere booted out.

But why was he then snubbed by history and particularly by the doccie? The man had achieved modest success with his bantustan , better than Ciskei and the other bantustands in promoting the lives of the populace.

I believe it comes from that fatal year which was 1994 when South Africa wanted to become one and there was a push for the April 27th poll that Mangope unilaterally pulled Bophutatswana out of the Codessa talks and the elections. That was hes undoing, that  created unrest that finaly pushed him out of power. Although until to this day the man still blames the ANC for it and not the citizens of the NW. Which is a shame cause it was 'batho bame'' (my people) who ejected him from power but he has still to come to terms with it.

For me the old Bophutatswana government insured a sheltered life for me,if it was not for my family relations outside of Bophutatswana. I would have grown in complete middle class ignorance of apartheid and the effects it had on the country and on me as a sheltered Motswana in a bubble that was Mafikeng. The old governtment contributed in giving me a good education, a good home and a goood neighbourhood to live in.

Its a pity the man was short sighted, if he had made different decision in 1994 I could be singing a different tune about him. So was Mangope a saint, a visionary leader, or megalomaniac? I'd say he was a flawed leader, but a leader nonetheless who forgot to put the peoples interest before his own.

Mangope was very passionate about his people that is y he always had their interest at heart.
As u said Thabby Bop was the only well established homeland that is y Sol Kezner invested in it.
For me he was the best out of all the others, even now I do not know what KaNgwane had and who was the boss there but with Mangope we knew what he stood up 4...

You so right, cande... I might not know the exact logistics of what exactly happened, i might not know the terms that they use and i might not have read tha-bang's article here above, but I know for sure that after 1994, all the developments that were happening in the rural areas were stopped... the Stadium in Itsoseng in standing there halfdone as well as the one in Ganyesa... MegaCity became just another Score Supermarket and Mafikeng/Mmabatho was turned into a almost-a-village that it is now...

So when you talking about Bophuthatswana and comparing it to NorthWest.. the graph goes downwards, people... downwards..

So my conclusion, mense, is, No, Tautona was not a punk.. he wasnt then, and he isnt one, now... Even if he could have been, in ANC terms, nna i love his punk'ness.

tell me about Megacity Carino, it hurts me when i see the place...there is not even Score in Megacity, the cinema's have been closed..i cannot shop in Mafikeng, its terrible...

Mafikeng in town, is bad..its like a shopping complex whereas its supposed to be the capital city of the NW..

Now it seems as if the Bophutatswana goverment wasted money tring to build those things...

To tell you the truth-A better life for all is the biggest hoax in history after the excuse of porn on e-tv....

Im sure Bop would have been a world class country by now.

Pity we were sacrificed at the altar of that scourge of the 21st century called DEMOCRACY..

Reminds me of Jabba'a Garona

Actually this Bophuthatswana issue is quite emotional
i know, its something ive been battling with for some tiem. uTata has done alot to reconcile the country espicially between black and whites. He's made guys like FW de Klerk and his kin feel welcomed in the new SA. he has goneout of his way to appease Mr Buthelezi but uTata and his co seem to have little regard for former Bantustand leaders.
My formative years were spend in maf-town, I grew up in Mmabatho and I grew up under the old system and to see whatshapening in mafikeng it realy makes me wonder.
Is the deterioration of mafikeng a fault of an over blown civil service or incompetence or a deliberate attempt to destroy whatever Mangope had built?

My aunt tells me they now have an RDP settlement behind unit 8, that is something that would have never hapened before but its now happening? Theres a shanty town developing infront of Rooigrond.let me not start about the portholes and the water issue?
Are these things all incompetence of local government ?if it is what happened to the old guys who made sure things were running smoothly? Wasnt there a proper hand over?
Although I do feel if Mangope had handled the 94 issue slightly differently things would be a bit different today but why couldnt the current local government build on what existed already?

Cande
21 Jul 2008 09:10

tell me about the RDP hoses that are thrown everywhere and anywhere and the Shanties in front of Rooigrond..Sies

do uou guys think its a conspiracy that mafiken gis going downthe tube, whilst places like klerksdorp seem to be doing well? or is there a reasonable explanation

You might have a point there

lepogo
21 Jul 2008 09:15

No there wasnt a hand over-they literally went running to destroy everything through incompetence and lack of proper schooling in Public Admin and ,I mean a few months earlier they were burning and throwing stones and suddenly they were having power beyond belief.

Typical of a sad African story-power and lack of capacity to use came all at once...

Mafikeng-once the Capital city of fun and sophistication is nothing but a rut and an all too distant memory of a life great and care-free..

Years from now we will be talking about Bop in the same way we now are speaking of the Ancient Mayan culture-of the old ruins of Mapungubwe...

Simmone
21 Jul 2008 09:32

I have always believed that the history of the apartheid struggle in South Africa is documented and presented in such a way that the ANC and its agenda prevail like the Saints and saviors and everything that is not ANC is viewed as taboo or anti-democracy.

What’s happening in Mafikeng is exactly what is going on in the Eastern Cape (aka) the former Ciskei region. Everything that was built pre 1994 is either in a state of despair or living in its former glory, Bisho the Capital of the Eastern Cape has become the ghost city.

UCdP) did for the NW province, what ANC can never dream of doing for the province....

It depends on which part of Buphuthatswana u are from!!! People in the urban areas benefitted at the cost of people in the rural areas!  That's Y the NW gov at the moment has a huge backlog of villages that still need basic things like electricity and running water.

There was no equal distribution of services to urban and rural areas.

hey Carin i'll drop you a PM later on today .
Vesa you are right areas like Mafikeng benefired more from the old regime than most rural areas.
look atthe Bafokeng tribe now, i think whats happening to them now cold only have happened in a truely democratic country. I doubt if Mangope would have ever given them rights to the platinium.
maybe the ANC is not so bad after all.

True...true!!! Phokeng and a lot of villages in and around Rusties were very underdeveloped before 1994. My grandmother stays in a village near Mogwase, they only got electricity and water taps after 1994, only got tar roads last yr (though 10km's from the village it's gravel road, but for the people living there it's better than nothing) they still don't have running water and a proper sewerage system! So to say Mangope did to NW what the ANC will never do is not true at all.

Mangope used to focus on the townships he created e.g. Mmabatho, Zeerust, Mogwase, Ga-Rankuwa, Hammanskraal and Mabopane etc.

As for the rural areas, they had to donate money to built places like a clinic/ school which I think are the Gov's responsibility

Cande

I am proud to say i grew up in the rural areas of the NW called Taung, and there was always developments in the rural areas..
I always had FREE water that the goverment purified for us, nowadays poor people pay for the water..
There was a pharmacies, restaurants and entertainment areas that we could access e.g Taung Tusk, all that has been shutdown.
I went to an Agricultural boarding school and during the time when the new goverment got in things went from bad to worse. the goverment used to give funds to assist with the food in the hostels, but all that changed..sometimes we will eat brown bread and tea for supper.
There was an agric college next to us, and that has since closed.
The clinics in the rural areas dont open 24/7 anymo..
They have moved some rural areas to the NC, which makes ti difficult for the poor to access goverment services eg. clinics, police stations..

i just get worked up when i think about it
