The Amazing Return

After a very prolonged absence, The Amazing Race is finally back! Hooray! It’s been so long, I momentarily forgot what happened in the last season. Or maybe my mind willfully repressed all memory of those damn Hippies. Thanks, mind!

Like an old friend, Phil greeted us from the rainy streets of Seattle and introduced us to our new set of teams. My excitement over having TAR back was such that I was even happy to see the annoying mainstays like the vapid pretty boys and girls, and the obligatory Bickering Couple I Will Want To Kill After Five Minutes. This time it took me seven whole minutes before I wanted to kill the latter.

This season is one of the most diverse yet. Not only are there various people of all races, creeds, and sexualities but there are also not one but two separate pretty girl/boy teams and even a chick with only one leg. The first few minutes saw the introduction of the following teams:

Peter and Sarah: Friends. She’s the Heather Mills type except without the gold-digging tendencies, oodles of money or German porn past. I think. You never know.

Bilal and Sa’eed: Friends with beards (not the Katie Holmes variety). Muslim dudes who like to praise Allah. That’s really all I got out of the whole fifteen minutes they lasted. Can you imagine if Ma Weaver was on this season?

Rob and Kimberly: Dating douchebags. He says she’s the controlling type. OK, I lied about being happy to see the bickering couple. I hated them from second one.

Dustin and Kandice: Beauty Queen friends. Blonde and slightly toothier Blonde. They haven’t mentioned either world peace or how people would underestimate them because of their looks, so that’s a plus.

David and Mary: Married. He’s a coalminer who may or may not have the Black Lung, she’s a housewife without a dental plan. Trust me, you can tell.

Erwin and Godwin: Brothers and Wins. Self-described Meatheads. I would have given the Meathead title to another team but if they really want to claim it, it’s theirs.

Duke and Lauren: Father and Daughter. He gets weepy over the fact that she’s a big ol’ lesbian. Why? It’s not like she’s even dating some scary tattooed biker chick with a record.

Vipul and Arti: Sweet Marrieds. Completely unable to follow directions and lasted all of one episode. Seem to like ironic T-shirts.

Kellie and Jamie: Cheerleader friends. As stereotypical as they seem. These are actually the clueless pretty girls that Dustin and Kandice initially seem to be.

Tyler and James: Models and former druggies. Drug abuse? In the entertainment industry? Well I never!

Lyn and Karlyn: Friends and Lyns. Single mothers brought together by their creepily similar names.

Tom and Terry: Gay couple who kind of look alike. Not the guys from Survivor, unfortunately.

Got that? Good. Phil raised that starting eyebrow and they were off. The first destination was Beijing. Woo, human rights abusers represent! Bilal and Sa’eed gave a shout-out to Allah. Somewhere Ma Weaver’s toes are curling.

Rob and Kimberly immediately got into argumentative mode. Five whole minutes into the show and they’re already at each other’s throats. I can just tell they’re going to be loads of fun.

"So which do you like better? Blue Steel or Le Tigre?"

At the airport, Jamie and Kellie did their best to dispel stereotypes about cheerleaders being dumb as they wondered whether Bilal and Sa’eed worshipped Buddha. Just remember; there are no stupid questions…but there are stupid cheerleaders. Hey, they did say they were fond of talking to doorknobs.

Jamie and Kellie are disappointed to find fish heads lack the scintillating conversation skills of door knobs

Wow, an instance of massive cultural idiocy and the teams weren’t even out of the US yet. To Beijing they went, as I salivated over the potential cultural D’oh moments to come.

The first task was to find The Gold House Restaurant and eat some fish eyes. A gross eating challenge already? The show usually waits until at least midway through the season until it pulls this Fear Factor crap. Fish eyes may look icky but they can’t taste half as bad as they look because no-one threw up.

When in China, never order Chinese

Dustin and Kandice’s cab driver could just not find the Gold Restaurant. Maybe he was colourblind? Meanwhile Mary and David tried to communicate with their taxi driver by quacking in terribly mangled Chinese. I can’t wait until they do their chicken impersonations in Mongolia.

The next clue told the teams to go to the Forbidden City and find a specific gate where they had to choose a whole bunch of departure times as Chairman Mao watched from the wall like some less moustachey Big Brother. Er…the 1984 kind, not the naked reality show kind.

But sneaky Phil and sneaky Mao had a nasty surprise in store. There were only 11 departure times and one envelope marked “The Last Team”. Ominous. I could almost hear the thunder when they showed it.

Bilal and Sa’eed were the unlucky stragglers to come in twelfth and have to present Phil and Mao with the dreaded envelope. They were immediately eliminated. That’s just harsh. Phil got mean since we last saw him.

Sa’eed and Bilal lamented the fact that they couldn’t ever control what the Creator does. Yep, Bruckheimer giveth and he taketh away. The teams bid the Beards a sad farewell as they walked back to Buddha or whoever the hell it is they worship. Goodbye, Beards. We hardly knew ye or your facial hair.

Maybe if they had worshipped Buddha, they would have lasted longer.

The next day the remaining teams had to get to Huahua (pronounced Hooha by those wacky quacks, David and Mary) via pedicurecab where they would face their first Detour. Their choices were either to lay some bricks in a specific pattern or to master the art of Tai Ji Ba Long, which is Mandarin for dancing on downers.

Most of the teams chose the brick-laying except for Tom/Terry and the Cheerleaders (they would since cheerleaders are dancers gone retarded). Imagine tennis crossed with synchronised swimming and slowed down like a scene from The Matrix and you have Tai Ji Ba Long, a new kind of Chinese relaxation technique. Now why couldn’t Rob and Kimberly have chosen that one? If anyone needs to relax, it’s them.

Man, Maria Sharapova and Amelie Mauresmo's new training programme is really out there

Tyler and James were the first to complete the bricklaying and found out they had to make their way to the Great Wall. Guess they’re not quite Zoolander and Hansel in the problem-solving stakes. Peter and Sarah also completed it quickly but Duke and Lauren looked like they had a bit of trouble despite being one of the first couple of teams to arrive. Dammit, Lauren, you’re supposed to be good at home improvement. What kind of lesbian are you?

In her attempt to hail a taxi, she pulled a Charla and played the one leg card by pointing to her artificial leg and saying “This is an emergency”. What, it’s about to rust? How can anyone even fall for that? She could at least take off the steel part and smear some tomato sauce on the stump to really play the emergency card.

"It's just a flesh wound."

Vipul and Arti had managed to find the worst pedicab driver in Beijing and couldn’t even find the Detour. They were clearly in a lot of trouble especially since Godwin and Erwin teamed up with Rob and Kimberly to lead them to the right place. Gah, why are you helping them?! Damn you, Meatheads!

It was at this point that I noticed Vipul’s shirt had “college” misspelled as “colege”. Is it an ironic T-shirt? Designed by Jamie and Kellie? We’ll never know.

Before any of the teams could check into the Pit Stop, they had to rappel up there. Yes, the teams had to rappel the Great Wall of China. Next up: shining and polishing the Eiffel Tower. The Ex-Junkies had no trouble scaling it and checked in first at the Pit Stop where Phil announced their prize of $20 000. Woohoo! Wonder how much crack that’ll buy ya?

Sarah had a big problem. She couldn’t get any traction with her artificial leg. That sucks. Can’t she just stick a suction cup on it or something? She persevered and conquered the pesky wall but not before Duke and Lauren had conquered it themselves. At the Pit Stop, they raved about overcoming their differences and finding their similarities (such as them both liking girls). Awww, I’m a sucker for a good parent/child team.

The Wall posed a challenge for several other racers, including Terry (I think), Mary and the Lyns. All things considered, the Great Wall doesn’t seem that bad compared to some other places past racers have had to climb/rappel. Now if they had to do a couple of laps all the way around the Wall, then we’d have a challenge on our hands.

Sadly, it was Vipul and Arti who arrived last and were given the bad news by Phil that they would be joining the Beards in Sequesterville. Damn, I liked them. They seemed really sweet. Plus all the lovely diversity this season has already taken a major blow. Naturally, I blame Ma Weaver.

United in love and ironic clothing

Next week: The teams wear funny hats that may or may not be Mongolian and get dragged behind horses that also may or may not be Mongolian. Or maybe it’s Scotland and they’re re-enacting the movie Braveheart.

Hola Claudisto

Indeed it was interesting Vutmi, Kim & Rob reminds of the other series where they had a very verbally abusive husband, i think the wife's name was Veronica.  Claudia where's my favorite couple on this list? the one with the woman with an artificial leg, i just love the way the husband goes all out for her and supports despite the odds. I was teary through the show at the love showed by the hubby and the way he treats her.

I love the way you describe the contestants - very funny.
I hate the models (ex drug addicts) they are so perfect, win all the games.

Great recap. This season started off well (diversity) but i am predicting the same ending. Luved Bilal and Sa’eed , thought they added flavour to the otherwise "usual" gang!!

Thanks for the welcome back, guys. Sorry I didn't get to do my pre-season first impressions of the teams but Tuesday just kinda snuck up on me before I realised it.

Cnglemother, is the verbally abusive couple you're thinking of Jonathan and Victoria? Thankfully they don't seem nearly as bad as those two, as annoying as they may be.

Oh my goodness Cloud, those comments had me in stitches, thanks for the fab recap.
THe teams in this season are very cool, you have all your tokens, and then some. I was sad to see the muslims go though...shame.

Cloud - you rocked my monday morning! That was cruel but really funny! I actually missed the muslim elimination! I kept asking where they were as the Lyns struggled up the wall!

I actually don't know if I should be sad or just miserable that there aren't any oldies! Those peeps are fun to watch... who can forget Meryll and Lynch! What was the wife's name again? Or is the "leggy" couple the representation of the oldies?

Segololo, do you mean Meredith and Gretchen? The couple during the Rob/Amber and Unchenna/Joyce season who went down a mine in SA?

I miss the Oldster team too. They could have gotten rid of one of the model/cheerleader/beauty queen teams or Rob and Kimberly to make space for an Oldster team.
