Do You Frigging Mind?

I wanted to relax and take my mind away, maybe shed a tear so I went to the movies on Saturday. I chose to watch 27 dresses because I figured it was a true chick flick. All the romantic twists, lotsa sex and fights with the hero and heroine but you can tell from the first 6 seconds of the movie that they will declare their love in the last 2 minutes of the movie.

27 dresses

When I chose my chair, I made sure it is close to the isle and hopefully not between 2 couples. However, as I sat down laden with popcorn and a huge glass of coke I regretted my choice. I was sandwiched between two sets of girlfriends out for a movie – they looked like they had man issues. Oh my gaad! I wanted a refund!

As the movie began, the gals on my right started talking about their boyfriends who “just do not have time for me” *roll my eyes* wouldn’t a restaurant (or MacDonalds) have been a better place to really get into such a conversation? At some point of the movie, they played an Amy Winehouse song (I assumed) and the gals on my left started singing out loud – and the actors were engaged in a crucial jerk a tear conversation that I was really interested to hear.

At some point, the gals on my left's phone rang and she had a good 2 and half minutre conversation! WTF? Do you know how much a 2 and half minute is worth in a chick flick? Actually for the entire damn movie? Why did you pay for the movie, buy that huge popcorn and softdrink and then do this?

Why? Why? Why? Why do you go to a movie and behave as such? Am I stuck up? Have the times changed? Is this normal? I remember my student days in Vereeniging when I used to walk to Vanderbijlpark from Tech to watch a R5 movie – I looked forward to everyone clapping when a scene is really funny or emotional, some people even going as far as a standing ovation when the movie ended with the stars kissing or making-up! But that was 9 years ago!!! And clearly for that price I kinda expected those kind of viewers in those movies. But now, we pay more, hope for a mature viewership and do not want extra totally unnecessary special effects to the movie…

Am I overreacting? What makes people do that? This is not the first time I have experienced this – I have witnessed people walking out of the theater after gooi-ing the huge softdrink glass on another loud viewer out of frustration after shushing them for half the movie! What should I do if I encounter this problem again? Since I am not brave enough to shush or gooi a drink?

No youre not over-reacting my lavh it's exactly as you have describes LOL and the sad part is .it does not happen only at cinema also in churches, reasturant libraries and etc people have lost respect so much it's scary a lot of people (adults) take nothing seriously these days and it's so annoying and friggin dumb if you ask me ,people don't know when to stop And  I do not if they are too dumb to notice that they are not  being funny or going overboard  or disrespectful to others with their chidish behaviour

What? ppl really do that ish? Hai bo!! I thought ppl are only disruptive in the movies(the irony!!!), not in real life at a cinema. Eish i dont know wat i'd do if someone did that, but how come no one was saying anything to them, coz surely u weren't the only one they were bothering...?

Wat to do, jst a polite, "guys please, I cannot concentrate here", and if they give you attitude, that will stir u up, and I'm sure you can handle it from there.

what about the clappers? they clap so long you miss some really good comebacks cause bona they're still clapping from 5 minutes back and shushing them seems to fuel them up!

Renegade:<<but how come no one was saying anything to them, coz surely u weren't the only one they were bothering...?>>
What niggles me the most: I was the sandwiched lone person and the 3 oldish couples in front of us were looking at me like I was part of it... they kept turning to look at us and I think they thought I was part of the crew... I couldn't exactly say "I don't know these idiots!!" when I was just so angry too!

I now know exactly why I appreciate Cinema Noveau - mature viewers!

Come to think of it hiring movies is the only thing that makes sense these days especially in these cinemas, but i've notice ukuthi if you go for late movie especially at Eastgate, people are well behaved there Sego. Sorry about this experience Sego, i was once in a situation like this in Carlton centre, luckily for me it was a bunch of 16 year olds and i told them to shut up, the one said phela we also paid jsut like you, yazi abantwana bathese days, but i really raised my voice and they did shut up.

annoying couples, irritating mothers & their broods, people with verbal diarrhea, farting folks, mr/mrs i'veseenthemoviebefore are all the reason i dont do cinemas anymore. only dvd's. if there's a new movie i have to see badly i only go during the week @ 9 in the morning. the fact that i'm my own boss comes in handy

Segololo
25 Feb 2008 05:04

@ belz: haayi belz! You are brave! I always worry that they will gooi the softdrink on me - rasberry or cremesoda do not look really good on clothes. and they are really loud colours!

<<Come to think of it hiring movies is the only thing that makes sense these days especially in these cinemas>> But NOTHING beats the chair vibrating when the sound is REEEEAAALLY good! He he he! ANd I can't get my dvd home theater sound to make my sofa vibrate!

Honestly and with all due respect,I think you are overreacting, because going to a public place comes with its nonsense..better said it comes with the territory and all you bloggers dont start throwing the popcorn on me,I am just stating my honest opinion

sponono
25 Feb 2008 23:50

Nanana...I agree with you BUT...whats wrong with talkin about it.(e.g being in a relationship comes with its own nonsense yet we still talk about it)
..it makes one feel betta knowing that somebody shares the same sentiments..and maybe JUST maybe these fools in cinemas might be reading and might just change their behavior at least once...(in fact I might be doin something in a cinema unaware that its irritating and reading such comments makes me realise that eh eh ITS NOT ON
ANYWAYS
when we were kids weused to go to this cinema whre you watch five/six movies the whole day..and its really dark..and there was this old man who kept on purazing kids and it used to scare the hell outa me coz we neva knew where he's sitting..and he'll just thumela his hand to your lap and start fiddling until you jump outta your sit..but you'd neva see him..(and this was way before the word "abuse" even existed...LOL)

sweetie my baby
26 Feb 2008 07:04

noo, nanana  - duck, coz here comes the popcorn! i'm chucking in your direction -  you cannot think it's acceptable to chat out loud in the cinema - go to a restaurant, the park, or betta yet - stay home! no, just like belz, nna i tell people to shut up - and if they don't, best believe i go get the usher to chuck them out. i paid good money for a MOVIE, not your nonsensical prattle....

do i look like i give a damn about your life????? coz if i did, it was just a mistake, so stop talking about your troubles please - i really don't give an ish... can we just watch the damn movie, PLEASE???

as you can see, i feel very strongly about this...

26 Feb 2008 07:14

Segololo....I have a not so nyasty way of dealing with such. It works like a charm everytime. Make them actually notice that you can hear what they are talking about, its not your choice but you are listening.
For instance if they are talking about their man issues laugh and sigh where appropriatre....
They'll shut up - GUARANTEED

Went to see this movie and it was great!!

26 Feb 2008 07:44

Nna what really irritates me is when you are out on your first date and the guy wants to start chatting in the middle of a dramatic scene. I mean why don't u wait until we at the restaurant, to speak to me. The movies is not a place for conversations and chatting up chicks. That ish is flippin irritatin!!!!

Fluffy Head
26 Feb 2008 07:48

Honeypot_LMAO,  why do ppl think a movie is a right place for a 1st date.
You can't talk during a movie and you are supposed to talk on your 1st date....figure it out.

sweetie: thank you my love! I have been trying to find an appropriate way to reply to Nanana without kicking myself later. I accept her/his respectful apology and her/his opinion BUT WITH ALL DUE RESPECT TOO, Nanana

When I am in public, I am considerate, kind and always polite. I behave well because I know that people don't always have the nicest things to say to each other but I am  different. I don't behave like a lunatic simply because I am in public! When I am in my house, I will talk during the movie - we can always rewind it. When I am with my girls and have man issues we hire a movie and stay in then bash the brothers all we want, sing along to the songs and generally have a great time but when we go to the movies we acknowledge that there are people there that so not need our issues and horrible voices as special effects. We keep our mouth zipped unless we are laughing or gagging on the damn soda!

My mum loves saying "A person treats family badly because they can take it, can't actually wish you away and you can get away with it, but when dealing with strangers they don't give a f** and will kick you a** when you don't treat them well. Masepa ke masepa le ga o ka a apesa dipalesa" (ish is ish even if decorated with flowers) So I keep in mind that my family will love me and I treat them well, but with strangers I treat them with kid gloves uless they put on their gloves!

Ok inconsiderate people should b chucked with popcorn but are we supposed to b quiet throughout the entire movie, is it wrong to make a- and I hightlight- whispered comment about some intriguing scene that just happened or how hot the star is, coz I do that and suddendly I get these wicked stares from some cranky middle aged lady in front of me, ok people its unnatural to go for 2-3 hours without saying a word. Carrying on conversations is a completly different story, u have 2 note.

Then there's people who go watch a comedy and have the audacity to actually shush you when u laugh out loud, like the time I went to see Rush Hour 3, my friend and I were LingOL to Chis Tucker n Jackie Chan rendering a hilarious rendition of "Closer I get 2 u" now all of a sudden all them white people start shushing us and stuff, hayi that was it for me, we told them where 2 get off( respectfully of course, hehehe) so they started moving away from us and taking other seats. ( seriously, who doesnt LOL at Chris Tucker, say what u may)

Moral of the story: Don't go to  c a comedy if u dont have a single funny bone in u.
