Valentines Day 

NB: this article was originally created by Nonny for Valentines Day but has now been edited as an after-the-effect thought. Enjoy the read.

We’ve been going out for years, and every year is the same, you seldom treat me special, every day is a normal day and yet on Valentines day I am your queen, you tell me you love me a thousand times and you buy me expensive presents attached with a beautiful card and make me feel like the special lady that I am!

I appreciate that, but I ask why on Valentines and not on any other day?
Why do you wait for a day that the meaning of has been truly forgotten. The real meaning of Valentines is about two Saints who were men and they were imprisoned and killed for being Christians in the 3rd Century A.D. One saint wrote a letter to his daughter and signed it: “Your Valentine” Both these saints died on February 14, which in Roman times is a night for a certain festival. That’s the true meaning of Valentines. But nowadays people exchange gifts and cards to commemorate this day.

This day should not only have meaning to those in relationships, but it should be a day where everyone celebrates love in general, whether in family, friends or lovers.

Now I believe that life if too short to wait for one day in the calendar to show your love and appreciation of the people whom are special in your life. It’s the little things in life that have more meaning than any material thing we will ever have.

Advertsiers are exploiting the fact that we do not know what it really means to show love and therefore we feel that they best way to show our love is through material things and yet that is not the true meaning of love. The true meaning of love is in our daily actions and we should live love and not let the world tell us when to love at our best.

I do not celebrate Valentines because I have told myself that I will not wait for a calendar date to show my parents, family and friends how much I love them. I have also realised that when you do things in an unexpected manner they tend to have more meaning than things that are done because of a certain command. So treat your loved one’s in special way when they least expect it and the value of your love for them will have more meaning than when you do it with the rest of the world.

To my extended family here at TVSA I hope you all had a happy Valentines Day and to also remind you all that the origin of Valentines is about the love of a father and the a daughter and overall it is about the love of God. So whether this day finds you single or not remember that Valentines is not just about lovers but about all forms of relationships that have more meaning than that of lovers.

Now the questions I pose to you all today are:

• Do you celebrate Valentines or not? No i always have sumthing to do i.e study for a test. VD most of the yrs has been in weekdays, which i happened to be @school/ varsity.

Havent heard...I only heard in passing about someone called Saint Valentine.

Havent celebrated it in my life and dont get the hype people make out of it because that hype can happen everyday should one want it to.

I think space, good food and wine would do it....followed by passionate sessions although this can still happen everyday or weekly should one decide to.

People turn to think so but to me its the same.

I am not a big fan or receiver of gifts so anything nice and small would mean a lot. I havent celebrated it anyway but did get gifts from someone who cares this year... not on the day but days before and it meant so much to me.

But i have my black version story about the the day. The day is commemorated in honour of an Italian stallion (I am talking about a man) that was a Casanova/udlabantwana or their extreme version of uHlomla Dandala in the whole of Rome and he died on 14th Feb and it is believed that his funeral was attended by mostly females that were devastated by the death of this super lover. Emngcwabeni wakhe onke lawo makhosikazi ayenxibe red/white. Igama lakhe yayinguValentino.

Do you celebrate Valentines or not? No i dont think its relevant to me and i feell its too commercialised and overrated. And i dont understand why it should only be on one day that we remember to shower our loved ones with gifts and affection.

dinner dates, flowers and the little gifts sometimes....maara this year angitholanga neks...my boo aint the valentines type of guy,he just does it coz uyayazi ukuthi ngizomvimba for a week if not two LOL...
What kinds of gifts do you receive and what do they mean to you? 2006 i got red roses,a card and a big teddy,2007, we had i dinner date and flowers and this year i got nothing and i am very pissed....havent called him today and naye uyayazi he's in trouble.

@Nonny, im sorry i'll put an article within your article. but that is the knowledge i have about the origin of valentines day and theirfore i do not celebrate it.

In the days of the Roman Empire, the month of February was the last and shortest month of the year. February originally had 30 days, but when Julius Caesar named the month of July after himself, he decided to make that month longer and shortened February to 29 days while making July a month of 31 days. Later when Octavius Caesar, also known as Augustus, came to power, he named the month of August after himself, and not be outdone he also subtracted a day from February and gave the month of August 31 days. To this very day it remains that way. The ancient Romans believed that every month had a spirit that gained in strength and reached its peak or apex of power in the middle or ides of the month.

This was usually the 15th day, and it was a day when witches and augurs, or soothsayers worked their magic. An augur was a person filled with a spirit of divination, and from the word augur we get the word "inaugurate", which means to "take omens." Since February had been robbed by Caesars and had only 28 days, the ides of February became the 14th day of that month. Since the Ides of a month was celebrated on the preceding eve, the month of February was unique, because it was the 13th day that became the eve of the Ides that month, and it became a very important pagan holiday in the Empire of Rome. The sacred day of February 14th was called "Lupercalia" or "day of the wolf." This was a day that was sacred to the sexual frenzy of the goddess Juno. This day also honored the Roman gods, Lupercus and Faunus, as well as the legendary twin brothers, who supposedly founded Rome, Remus and Romulus. These two are said to have been suckled by wolves in a cave on Palatine Hill in Rome. The cave was called Lupercal and was the center of the celebrating on the eve of Lupercalia or February 14th. On this day, Lupercalia, which was later named Valentine's Day, the Luperci or priests of Lupercus dressed in goatskins for a bloody ceremony.

The priests of Lupercus, the wolf god, would sacrifice goats and a dog and then smear themselves with blood. These priests, made red with sacrificial blood, would run around Palatine Hill in a wild frenzy while carving a goatskin thong called a "februa." Women would sit all around the hill, as the bloody priests would strike them with the goatskin thongs to make them fertile. The young women would then gather in the city and their names were put in boxes. These "love notes" were called "billets." The men of Rome would draw a billet, and the woman whose name was on it became his sexual lust partner with whom he would fornicate until the next Lupercalia or February 14th.

Thus, February 14th became a day of unbridled sexual lust. The color "red" was sacred to that day because of the blood and the "heart shape" that is popular to this day. Congrats Nonny ur article is superb, I never celebrated V bfr.
The reason is I never had anyone to celebrate it with but yesterday i told myself I am going to celebrate this day.
I will appreciate myself as I deserve it.
I cooked a storm and guess what while i was busy doing that my ex pitched with a friend of his and we all had dinner, my treat. 
They even asked me was I expecting someone coz it was indeed a 3 course meal.
I normally do not cook coz it is not nice to always cook 4 1 so at leats it was diffent this yr as the theme was myself and only myself

I just think there are many stories going around about the exact origins of valentines. Everyday I learn a new version.

None the less, I don't celebrate it. To me one should be able to celebrate their loved one on any day the so wish. Which is why I don't believe in a whole lot of other days set apart to celebrate people like mothers/father etc days. With the way its being commercialised, I bet in a few years I would have lost the whole meaning of christmas and easter as well.

Halala Halala Nonny & nice one sana. Mna shame i think i have a bad luck. Whenever im involved with some1 during these days like Valentinos & Birthdays i always fight with my partner so in my life i neva get a gift except my best freind. The last time i got a card i was doing grade 12 then after i neva got anything. So Nonny luv i dont celebrate valentines day bcoz ndibanesimnyama. The only thing i do is(like yesterday), i play music Very loud & sing with my bad voice & go to sleep peacefully

Always thought Valentines originated from a couples forbidden love and the man was hanged on the day.........

Only good thing was that for the first time ever in my life I had a man on Valentines day but still dont celebrate the day and had to act like I did.
