I tuned in to YFM on the weekend by accident—I was channel hopping- and came across this woman. Do you know how difficult it is to find a good radio show on weekends where half the content is NOT shout-outs or soccer broadcasts?
Well, right after the world chart shows, the urban top 10s, top 40s and top whatevers, there really is little to listen to. I was pleasantly surprised to hear how different Bridget’s show is.
I caught the tail-end of a conversation with a caller and she was saying something along the lines of, “They said I was ugly and now I’m a model, they said I had a squeaky voice and now I’m on radio, they said I was skinny and now I’m a model!!!” It would read like an arrogant statement but she said it so matter-of-factly that I took note.
Sure her voice does sound child-like but it’s what she does with the show that matters. Her interaction with the people that call in makes you wish you were in the studio with her to see why she sounds so A-N-I-M-A-T-E-D (not excited, not ecstatic, not thrilled, not happy, not even energised BUT animated).
Here’s someone that’s not apologetic about herself, her achievements, her looks. Here’s someone whose personality shines through the airwaves..I feel like I’m listening to the REAL Bridget and not someone who’s earning an income. Her energy is so contagious……!!
Some DJ’s, even on national stations, come across as something different on the radio. Slyso on Umhlobo sounds like he’s much more suited to do a jazz show (the kind that Brenda Sisane did/does on MetroFM), Glen Lewis sounds nothing like the HOT man Shwashwi wants to father her 3 kids; Rudeboy Paul sounds like he’s trying too hard to be whatever it is he wants to be (all those yeah’s where a pause is needed are giving me a headache); Sanza sounds like he should be in politics-he politicises everything including his sports show (& why does he need sound effects BTW?)- but I like him cause he’s a Mshengu; Thomas on Metro really needs to thank Lupi for his breakfast show cause on his own, he’s yawn material and tries too hard to be controversial. I will not even say anything about KayaFM..nxxxxxxx!
If Bridget had a breakfast show I’d never switch channels cause this woman rocks!
Okay when I was researching info on this young sexy lass, I came across this picture, shot for Marie Claire’s (no, I do not read this magazine!!) Each One Reach One campaign against HIV/AIDS. Some of celebrities that took part in this naked campaign, whose pictures I’d love to see are: Hlubi Mboya, Kuli Roberts, Tim Horwood and Unathi Nkayi!! I asked Bridget to tell us what happened behind the scenes in this photo shoot:
(damn, can't remember the last time i saw my dimples on my lower back)
T: Is that a real snake?
B: WHY Does everyone ask me that? Does it not look real? (that's me getting phoxa'd)
T: How heavy was it?
B: It was bloody heavy especially when it decided to use my neck as a resting place. But there was something about that cold scaly skin rubbing against my bare soft skin that just did something to me…he he (get yr minds off the gutter guys!!)
T:What was going through your mind when this shot was taken?
B:I just wanted it to be over. I was the first person on the set and it was cold that morning. When I got to see the snakes, I thought please don’t let them give me the brown hungry looking one.
T:Which other celebrity was approached to take part in the campaign but declined?
B:I don’t know but I do know that indeed there were a few people who changed their minds at the last minute.
T:Any hilarious (read scandalous) moments during the shoot?
B:Actually none. It was over before it even began. And plus we shot at different times so maybe something happened later on.
T:Do you know how much money was raised for the campaign?
B:Well if the corporate fund raiser was anything to go by then I am sure that the campaign was a true success. I am happy knowing that I was able to do my bit.
If you’re wondering where you know her from, she was a Miss SA finalist and was on Generations. I still think it was the introduction of her character on the show that gave Cleo that edge. Her character made Cleo feel she had to lose weight and that’s why she ended up looking so sexy in the end, even though she left the show just as her role was getting interesting. It is because of Bridget that Linda Sokhulu was my favourite actress on the soap. But, even when Bridget joined the Generations cast, her face was already familiar and I still can't figure out where else I saw her besides on the Miss SA pageant (i know it wasn't on MNET's Temptation SA cause ya'll know my LSM right?). I mean c’mon, if Uyanda Mbuli had faded into obscurity I doubt I’d remember that she was once a Miss Mpumalanga (he he he) at some point in her life!
You can catch Bridget on YFM (99.2) , Saturdays and Sundays 12.00- 15.00pm.
