Audition tips from the Idols judges

This Saturday (23 June, 2007) sees the start of the Idols auditions - I was going to say countrywide but they aren't taking place everywhere.

I've been stumped about why they aren't happening in downtown Durban so I asked and apparently the show's trying out new venues like Margate and Knysna 'cos of it being holiday time. The idea is that there'll be lots of people holidaying in these places who are looking for fun things to do on the spur of the moment type thing. I must say one thing I'm pleased about is that this cuts out Bloem completely.

Saturday's auditions sing off in Jozi at the Standard Bank Arena and the judges have sent through this advice to everyone entering:

Dave "I could be sexy if I loosened up" Thompson
"I'm looking for someone who is ready to work. Idols doesn't make you an instant star, Idols gives you an opportunity to work very hard in the entertainment industry to make yourself a star and that hunger for success is what I will be looking for in this year's contestants." Dave Thompson
Yeah, yeah whatever Dave. I see he's at least tried to do something about his image. The Metallica beard almost works but those glasses are an eyesore.

Mara "Sasko" Louw
"Just sing the tune. Don't try to sound like Beyoncé or Mariah Carey doing vocal callisthenics.Remember that you can't recreate a slickly-produced sound in a chilly audition room. Just sing the song as it's written. If you can sing, we'll hear it."
Verry wishful thinking at the end there methinks.

Randall "slap me with six more beers" Abrahams
"Don't try to be too fancy. Pick a song we wouldn¹t already have heard ad nauseam and which really showcases your voice, and just sing it."
Randall told me that he never knows who gets eliminated from week to week when contestants get voted off - even towards the end part. Apparently he only finds out when he gets to the next show once they're gone.

Gareth Spliff
Stand up straight and don't fart. No, seriously just don't sing "You Raise Me Up". Everyone thinks they can sing that song and, listen, they can't. gareth
The only excuse for that joke is spliffification. Too true about the song though.

If you want to enter the show check out this story that has all the details about venues and what you need to take with you: How To Enter Idols 4. If you're going for it, good luck!
