I’m back with another Isidingo weekly (4-8 June 2007) Recap. I recovered from 2 exams and Dance Africa Finals and meeting Shuga & Cande - wassup girls it was great meeting you...!!! Back to Isidingo.....

Where is Phil?

We all know that Nikki has been terrorized by her British boyfriend. Well she was still locked up in the house because she feared that her boyfriend may be waiting to pounce on her. Calvin begged Nikki to tell her mother about Phil being in SA, but of course she didn’t, she thinks she’s got the whole thing under control. Since Calvin couldn’t take it anymore, he decided to ask for some advice on how to handle this situation. Lolly was there to listen and told Calvin that whatever he does will put Nikki in trouble, so it’s best that he tell his father. Since Calvin has a crush on Lolly, everything that she says is right. So off he went to tell Frank that Phil in SA and that he's been harassing Nikki. Frank called Detective Nkwane (I got his name) and alerted him that Phil has been calling Nikki. Frank was surprised to learn that Phil is still in London because he was arrested, but is out on bail. Everyone was relieved because that means he’s not in South Africa and Nikki need not worry. Natasha rushed home to tell Nikki that Phil is still in London and she shouldn’t worry or live in fear. Natasha was also relieved that her daughter is not doing drugs as she thought.

Phil called Nikki and she gave him attitude on some “Listen here Phil; I know you are still in London. What did I do to you to terrorize me like this? Just leave me alone.” Phil didn’t listen to her; he told her that he’s watching her. She just hung up on. I believe Phil is in SA, but can they get on with it because I don’t see the point of dragging this. What does Phil want? It’s been 3 weeks – damn… we haven’t even seen this Phil – he’s been a ghost for 3 weeks.

Well since the rainbow family is all smiles now. Nikki and Calvin are hanging out like brother and sister and giving each other advice on love. Calvin has a crush on Lolly! When Len told her this (to stop leading Calvin on) she just thought Len is talking rubbish – there’s no way Calvin would like her, she’s 26 (she said this 4 times - I don’t know if she was convincing us or herself.) Apparently Calvin is 18 or 19 (they should’ve have said that 20 times so they can really convince me). Lolly seems interested (ofcoz she is –she needs to get some lahving) but seems to have issues that he’s the boss’ son. Calvin asked Lolly to come over for dinner because he’s cooking crayfish. But see he was lying because he didn’t even buy the damn thing. Even asked Nikki to shoplift a few since she’s got experience in shoplifting (hehehe very funny Calvin). So we’ll see where this love thing is going.

The Bornmans

Ok I’ll give Anton some space this week; only because I think he’s a brilliant actor. But I'm still tired of their role in Isidingo. The gangrene spread and he had to go for an emergency surgery. He called Farrow who dropped everything and went to see her brother. When he was wheeled off to the theater he begged her that she must be there for him when he comes back. She promised that she’ll be there. As any girl in love would do, Farrow called Len because she didn’t want to be alone. Len was there in a flash. Farrow was quick to throw herself at Len. Len stopped Farrow and asked, “Are you sure you want to do this?” Yeah right Len, we all know you want to tap dat a$$. Well Len tapped it. While they were getting freaky deaky, Anton returned from surgery early. When he eventually woke up (alone) he discovered that his leg has been amputated. Farrow was still bonding with Len and went to the hospital later, and obviously her brother took her on a guilt trip about not being there when he needed her. “Where were you Farrow???” he asked. She told him she fell asleep. Farrow felt guilty and called her rock (Len) for some strength. Len told her that she’s always put Anton first and sometimes she needs to be selfish with her time. She asked him to take her to her mother’s grave because she wanted to “speak” to her mom.

Anton went for another surgery on the other leg. So it seems like they might amputate that too. Farrow can’t seem to handling all of this.

New Evidence

When Len took Farrow to the gravesite he also decided to go speak to “Tanya”. He told her about Farrow, the fact that he’s involved with a girl who lost her mother because of Cherel. He told Tanya that he likes Farrow because she’s sexy and she doesn’t know it. While at the gravesite, Len saw fresh flowers with a card signed “Love Mom”, so he put two and three together – if the flowers are fresh then Cherel could still be around. He told Farrow about this and she will obviously tell Rajesh. Anton is more anxious of finding Cherel now that he’s lost one his leg (maybe he’ll loose the other leg too). Seems like no one knows that Cherel is pregnant because Len and Farrow are wondering why Rajesh is desperate to find her.

The Fighting club

Lee bought TFC from Len and sold it to Afri-cast. Ziyanda was a bit skeptical about why Lee wants to get rid of a show with the highest AR’s (Does AR stand for Audience Ratings?? – Yah it makes sense, please correct me if I’m wrong). Barker owns shares in Afri-cast (I didn’t know this), he told Ziyanda to jump for the opportunity. The next day, the deal with Afri-cast was signed. When ON!TV found out about this, they all thought Lee was being very stupid. Rajesh & Frank were angry that they were never consulted. Rajesh keeps telling Lee that she’s obsessed with getting rid of anything that’s connected to Cherel. Rajesh you shouldn’t even say anything. Len & his team was told that the show now belongs to Afri-cast, he was so angry at Lee for embarrassing him in front of his team – that she didn’t have the audacity to tell him first. Even though Len is R250 000 richer, he was still excited about being an Executive Producer for TFC – but Lee took that opportunity from him. Lee feels she made a mistake about selling the show - Lee when are you going to learn that you have to separate business and your personal life??

Learning IsiZulu

On a lighter note, Maggie and Lolly are learning to speak IsiZulu. Maggie is so excited, she speaks IsiZulu to everyone, even to Tswana speaking people. Len was saying some stuff in Fanakalo (that’s how they pronounced it – I always thought it was Fanakaloku) but Nandipha and Lettie were offended. Apparently it offends black people. Okay I’m black but I didn’t know that the language offends abantu. Well they gave some background on how Fanakalo was used in the mines so that the miners of different races and cultures could understand each other. (I knew that). Len didn’t understand why the ladies were so offended, he even sang some song in Fanakalo - didn’t understand it but knowing Len, it was obviously insulting. He also made a point that white people don’t complain when we (blacks) steal words from their language. That made me think - most words we use are taken from Afrikaans. Table – itafula – tafel. Chair – Isitulo – stool (okay that means something else in English). Eish I never liked Afrikaans, passing matric meant no more Afrikaans for me. I hated the language because I failed a term in standard 7 because I failed Afrikaans, even though I had a B aggregate. I couldn’t understand why I failed with such good marks and it was the first time ever that I saw a “FAIL” in my report card.

Then I understood why the youth in ’76 felt. Imagine being taught everything in Afrikaans! On that note -
                Happy Youth Month Y’all!!!

I’ll leave you with the lyrics of HHP’s Harambe:

I’m not the political type
not they type to fake an image for the sake of this whole conscience hype.
Never been called a Kaffir before,
Can’t imagine seeing 10 cops and dogs trashing through my front door,
Cant say what teargas smelled like,
Can’t imagine what a rubber bullet on your back felt like,
Can’t imagine holding guns on my palms, can’t imagine kegobona carrying Hector Peterson in your arms,
But it’s because of you that I don’t speak Afrikaans today,
I have a chance today, because of you joe I can dance today, without having to show you my pass,
because of you I don’t call no one a bas,
because of you I’m a star now,
black man going far now,
I’m a type of brotha who can drink at any bar now,
Because of you I’m educated,
because of you the black youth is emancipated..

Our grandparents and parents speak fluent Afrikaans, we laugh at our fellow black people when they speak broken English. But we are impressed when John greets in IsiZulu. Since I failed a term in Standard 7 because I failed a language that’s not my mother tongue, do you think schools should introduce an African language into the curriculum?? If we can learn English and Afrikaans – why cant non-African people learn to speak our languages? So guys leave Mandoza’s English alone!!

What do you think???

You know what you gotta do!!!
