Ted has to adjust to being just friends with ex-girlfriend Robin while newlyweds Marshall and Lily search for the perfect first home but can’t afford it because of Lily’s bad credit.
Barney, the ever suave Casanova, finds himself at the centre of a hilarious Fatal Attraction crisis with special guest star Britney Spears.
We also get one step closer to finding out the identity of the Mother of the title.
In the first episode: when Robin shows up with a new boyfriend Gael (Enrique Iglesias), Ted decides he is ready to hit the town with Barney. He meets Amy, (Mandy Moore), a tattooed party girl with whom he hooks up.
Ted wakes up the next morning with a butterfly tattoo - a "tramp stamp" - on his lower back. Marshall also calls Barney and shows him he has 55 days until his next slap.
