Survivor is an American version of the Survivor reality television game show based on the Swedish television series Expedition Robinson, originally created in 1992 by Charlie Parsons.
The show is based on stranding a group of strangers as one or more tribes in a remote location, where they must fend for food, water, fire, and shelter for themselves, while competing in challenges to earn rewards and immunity from being voted off by the tribe in progressive eliminations.
The last challenger remaining at the end of the competition wins the $1-million prize and title of Sole Survivor.
Survivor premiered in the USA on CBS on 31 May, 2000. Host/producer Jeff Probst has signed a contract to host the show until its 20th season.
Survivor premiered in South Africa on SABC3 on Tuesday 3 October 2000, at 19h00. See "Seasons" below for seasonal broadcast dates and times.
Season 11
Season 11 of Survivor is said to be the toughest yet and this has been borne out by the first episode which sees the contestants hiking 11 miles through the jungle.
This time around the Survivors have been given very little food and no water. There are no beaches either - the only water source is a river full of crocodiles that does not allow for sunbathing.
The location for this season is among ancient Mayan ruins in the middle of the Guatemalan jungle.
As always, the challenges will be based on the tribal life of the location's inhabitants, in this case, the ancient civilisation of the Maya.

Yaxha is named after the Yaxha National Park in which the season is filmed while the name Nakum comes from name of the ruins among which the contestants are living.
Former NFL football player Gary Hogeboom played quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys, a fact which he believes will ruin his chances at winning. According to him, the others will target him because they believe that football players make big money. To avoid this, he has decided to adopt the false identity of "Gary Hawkins: landscaper".
This is not the first time a contestant has downplayed how much they earn or lied about their background - Season Two's Rodger Bingham claimed to be a farmer but neglected to mention he also owned a bank for example - but Gary has taken it further than any contestant ever has.
Jamie Newton has appeared on an episode of the American soap All My Children as a participant in a contest to find the sexiest man in America. He placed a surprisingly high third.
Danni Boatwright was a runner-up in the Miss Teen USA pageant. Her friends call her Redneck Barbie because she shoots guns, loves sports and loves Ultimate Fighting. It is unknown whether she incorporated sharp-shooting into the talent portion of her pageants.
This season's big twist is the return of two of last season's most popular contestants. Bobby Jon and Stephenie were both placed in Ulong, a tribe which has the notorious distinction of having lost every Immunity Challenge in which it participated.
Bobby Jon and Stephenie were the last two members of Ulong and were forced to face off in a fire-starting challenge. Bobby Jon could not start his fast enough and was eliminated without receiving any votes. Stephenie went on to be 'conquered' by the rival tribe in lieu of the usual merge and was voted out two episodes later.
Mark Burnett decided to bring Bobby Jon and Stephenie back, partly due to their massive viewer popularity and partly because he felt they had been given a raw deal having been placed in the incompetent Ulong tribe. |
