Tropika Island of Treasure is a South African reality competition television series created by Samantha Moon and produced by KAP Productions and Stimulii in which celebrities and ordinary people compete in remote, exotic locations in a variety of daily challenges to win a R1-million prize.
The series began as a below-the-line promotion in 2008 with an insert on e.tv and two webisodes and became a full-fledged show for its second season, which premiered on e.tv on Sunday 18 October 2009, at 18h30. The show moved to SABC1 for Season 5.

Season 5 premiered on SABC1 on Saturday 16 February 2013, at 18h30. New episodes broadcast weekly. There are 10 episodes in the fifth season.
Season 1
Tropika selected 10 fans to pair up with 10 South African celebrities for the Tropika Island of Treasure challenge, which took place on the island paradise of Mauritius at the end of May 2008.
Celebrities and their fans participated as teams of two in the Amazing Race-style challenge and the winning duo shared R1-million.
The celebrities include Idols star Gift Gwe, Rhythm City actress and songstress, Pam Andrews, champion surfer and sports model Roxy Louw, R&B singer Loyiso Bala, vocalists Kelly Khumalo and Nadine, and comedians Kagiso Lediga and Joey Rasdien as well as Heino Schmitt, better known as Altus de Bruyn on 7de Laan.
Winners and celebrities flew to Mauritius in the last week of May and spent a week enjoying Mauritian-style hospitality at the Tamassa Hotel. South African fans were able to log on to the website to read up on the progress the teams made on their daily blog updates.
Fans needed to purchase a drink to choose from a list of celebrities they could be competing with and follow the on-pack guidelines by smsing their favourite celeb's name, their name, age and cellphone number to 34115.
The competition ran from 1 March to 30 April, 2008.
The contestants in the first season were (celebrity first):

The first season was won by Pam Andrews and her partner, Owen Madondo. Each received R500,000.
Season 2
Tropika Island of Treasure 2: Zanzibar became a half-hour show following on from the success of Tropika Island of Treasure: Mauritius. It was hosted by DJ Fresh and Natalie Becker.
Another 10 South African celebrities and 10 consumers jetted off to the exotic spice island of Zanzibar in October 2009 to compete in various challenges and activities, with the winning duo once again sharing in the grand prize of R1-million.
The 2009 Tropika celebrities included multiple award winning RnB singer Loyiso Bala; afro-pop singer, actress and model Kelly Khumalo; 7de Laan star Hendrik Cronje (who replaced original contestant Roland Schoeman); comedian Trevor Noah; singer, actress and presenter Bianca Le Grange; MTV Base VJ and YFM DJ Sizwe Dhlomo; SAMA award winning singer and songwriter Lira; SAMA award winning singer and songwriter Tasha Baxter; TV presenter and model Shashi Naidoo and afro-pop singer and actor, Speedy.
Potential contestants could find competition details on the label of their favourite Tropika flavour and enter for the opportunity to partner with their favourite celebrity and stand a chance at winning their half share of R1-million.
The competition ran from 1 July to 30 September, 2009.

The second season was won by Shashi Naidoo and her partner, Cuan Bergman. Each received R500,000.
Season 3
Based on the success of the past two years, Tropika Island of Treasure 3 called for entries to participate in the challenge, where seven winners and seven celebrities compete to win the grand prize of R1 million rand, and the opportunity of becoming a reality TV star.
The exotic island of Phuket, Thailand played host to this year's show.
In the previous competitions on the islands of Mauritius and Zanzibar, it was about contestants pairing with celebrities and sharing the R1-million rand. This year, all of the 14 contestants have an equal chance of walking away with the R1 million.
Each day, contestants participate in a range of fun, exciting, whacky, different and random challenges on the beautiful island of Phuket, Thailand. At the end of each day, the winner has the power to vote out another contestant, who leaves the island to return home.
This year's line up of celebrities include a mix of music, comedy, TV and radio personalities from rock star JR; diva and TV host Bonang Matheba; beauty queen Tatum Keshwar; funnyman Loyiso Gola; (in)famous drama queen Khanyi Mbau; actress Dionne Song, who portrayed Beyonce in the sitcom The Coconuts; to new pop-rock sensation, Snotkop.
Tropika Island of Treasure 3 launched on 1 August 2010 and called for all South Africans to purchase a Tropika drink, see the pack and enter the competition via sms or online. Deadline for entries was 31 October, 2010.
To allow viewers to get to know all the contestants, the show reduced the number of contestants and celebrities this year from 20 to 14 (seven each).
In previous years, contestants had a 1 in 10 chance of winning half a million rand; this year there is a one in 14 chance of winning the R1-million.

Season 4
Once again celebrities and everyday South Africans go head to head for a chance at winning R1-million in Mexico when Season 4 of Tropika Island of Treasure launches.
The seven celebrities are models Tracy McGregor and Joelle Kayembe; club and radio personality DJ Zinhle; hip hop artist Slikour; 5FM DJ Poppy Ntshongwana; presenter Phila Mazibuko and comedian Tshepo Mogale.
They will be joined by seven contestants from all corners of the country:
Aspiring musician Nolan Jonathan from Pietermaritzburg Nursery school teacher Stacey Swanepoel from Joburg Project administrator Roxana Swanlow from Eldorado Park Self-employed Ajive Suknandan from Cape Town Production manager Lucinda Human from Joburg Clerk Kgabo Mpati from Thembisa Financial consultant Ross Jordaan from Port Elizabeth
The 14 contestants will be living it up in a city known for being the playground of the rich and famous - the coastal city of Cancun in Mexico - to experience the glorious lifestyle offered by the famed destination whilst competing for the R1-million.
The 14 contestants battle it out each week in exciting yet challenging games such as the Yucatan Stocking tug-of-war and the Mayan soccer sacrifice, with the losing contestant being eliminated in every show.
In the finale, the final four will go head-to-head in a series of challenges with the ultimate goal of winning the R1-million.

Season 5
Once again celebrities and everyday South Africans go head to head for a chance at winning R1-million in Jamaica when Season 5 of Tropika Island of Treasure launches - now on new channel SABC1.
The seven celebrities are hip hop artists AKA and Da L.E.S., urban pop artist Mario Ogle, actresses Jay Anstey, Pearl Thusi and Phuti Khomo and the late model Reeva Steenkamp.
They will be joined by seven contestants from all corners of the country:

Note: the first edition of the show was not a proper show - it was comprised of one insert on e.tv and two webisodes. It only became a full show from Season 2, airing on e.tv It moved to SABC1 for Season 5, and episodes were increased to an hour in length.
