Dexter is an American television drama series based on the novel Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay and adapted for television by James Manos, Jr., which centres on Dexter Morgan, a serial killer who works for the Miami Metro Police Department as a blood pattern analyst.
The show originally premiered in the USA on Showtime on 1 October, 2006.
Dexter premiered in South Africa on M-Net on Sunday 4 February, 2007 after the 20h00 movie (roughly 22h00). It later aired on DStv's M-Net Holiday, M-Net Action and M-Net HD channels, and on TopTV's Top One channel. It also began airing on M-Net Series from Season 7. See "Seasons" below for seasonal broadcast dates and times.
Season 7 premiered on M-Net Series on Sunday 7 April 2013, at 21h30. New episodes broadcast weekly. There are 12 episodes in the seventh season.
Season 1
Dexter is a crime/thriller drama series about a likeable forensics expert for the Miami Metro Police Department who moonlights as a serial killer with his own brand of justice - he kills people he believes deserve it.
Orphaned at the age of four and harboring a traumatic secret, Dexter was adopted by a police officer who recognized Dexter’s homicidal tendencies and guided his son to channel his gruesome passion for human vivisection in a constructive way - by killing perpetrators that are above the law or who have slipped through the cracks of justice.
A respected member of the police force, a perfect gentleman and a man with a soft spot for children, Dexter's world reveals an unusual exploration into the mind of a sociopathic killer.
With an unflinching drive to kill, Dexter struggles to emulate normal emotions he doesn’t feel so that he can keep up his appearance as a caring, socially responsible human being.
Season 2
Thirty-eight days have passed since the previous season's finale, when Dexter killed his own brother, The Ice Truck Killer, and Rita's incarcerated ex-husband Paul told her about his missing shoe.
Doakes is making it difficult for Dexter to resume his killing ways, but his first opportunity is ruined by something much more unexpected.
Deb returns to work and finds herself under scrutiny from the public, as the freaks of Miami attempt to tap into her newfound celebrity status.
Paul continues to ask for Rita's help, and she begins to look at Dexter through new eyes.
In the meanwhile, the new season opens as treasure hunters make a gruesome discovery on the ocean floor...
Season 3
For Dexter, life seems to be going well.
His relationship with Rita and her kids is back on track. He’s no longer under scrutiny at his day job as a blood spatter analyst for Miami Metro Homicide. And his night job as a serial killer is operating on all cylinders.
So when he sets his sights on Freebo, a dope dealer and killer, it looks to be just another night of Dexter's dark justice. But things don’t go as planned and Dexter must find a way to extract himself from a pair of problems that he created, both in his home and night life.
Dexter also finds himself inexorably drawn to Miguel Prado, an Assistant District Attorney, who has a very personal reason to bring Freebo to justice.
Meanwhile, Debra is put in a difficult situation when someone from Internal Affairs wants her to inform on her new partner, Quinn.
Season 4
Six months after the season finale, Dexter is now living with three kids and a wife in a new home.
Along with his new son Harrison, the complexities of being a suburban father of three is making it difficult for Dexter to concentrate on his work.
His lack of sleep leads him to let a murderer walk by bringing the wrong documents to court and puts a strain on his life outside of the office.
Also, a now retired Agent Lundy has returned to finally capture the "Trinity Killer" who has arrived in Miami.
John Lithgow plays Arthur Mitchell, an unassuming, mild-mannered suburbanite who has been living a duel life as one of America's most prolific and deadliest serial killers.
Dubbed the Trinity Killer because of his proclivity to kill in threes, he relocates to Miami after being tracked by Special Agent Frank Lundy (Keith Carradine).
Brought on to assist in the investigation of Miami's latest serial killer, Dexter becomes fascinated with Trinity's unique killing methods and his ability to evade capture for almost three decades.
Season 5
In the aftermath of last season's chilling finale, Rita's death has left Dexter feeling responsible, possibly even... guilty.
Unable to deal with the trauma, Dexter makes a drastic decision that will impact everyone around him.
Quinn stirs up trouble at the station when he notes that Rita's murder, which is being pinned on the Trinity Killer, doesn't fit his normal murder profile.
Things get even more heated when Quinn suggests to LaGuerta that they look at the husband: Dexter Morgan.
Meanwhile, Quinn offers Debra much needed support, causing her to see Quinn in a new light.
Season 6
Dexter is back with a vengeance for a sixth season of startling suspense and unexpected twists.
It's been a year since last season's shocking and heartbreaking conclusion, and mild mannered criminologist-cum-grisly serial killer Dexter Morgan has come to terms with who he is.
But his existence is shattered when he crosses paths with an enemy unlike any he's faced before. A delusional religious zealot with unflinching convictions, this new adversary soon draws Dexter into a dangerous game that could well end in disaster.
Season 7
Season 7 returns in dramatic fashion, as Dexter is finally forced to confront his greatest fear, as Debra witnesses his insatiable, ritualistic slaying of a killer.
Now Deb knows the secret of his Dark Passenger, as she tries to reconcile the unfathomable idea that her beloved, mild-mannered brother is Miami's most notorious serial killer.
Dexter is still pulled by his natural impulses to seek out the guilty and exact his brand of vigilante justice, leading him on the trail of a brutal Ukrainian mobster (Ray Stevenson).
Along the way, Dexter meets Hannah McKay (Yvonne Strahovski), a strong, independent woman with a past that she's struggled to put behind her.
Produced by Showtime, Dexter is executive produced by John Goldwyn, Sara Colleton, Scott Buck, Manny Coto, Tim Schlattmann, Wendy West and Michael C. Hall.
