Vacancy: Stage Managers


The Market Theatre Foundation is looking for Stage Managers and/or Assistant Stage Managers to join our Production Team.

Skills Required:

  • Previous experience in theatrical stage management
  • Good basic knowledge of theatrical sound and lighting technology
  • Computer literate
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Driving licence and preferably own transport
  • Able to work flexible hours
  • Ability to work under pressure with tight deadlines
  • Education requirements: Tertiary education or equilivant training and/or proven experience.
  • Two contactable referees

Job Description
Stage Manager

A Stage Manager will, under the direction of the Senior Stage Manager and/or the Production Manager (as applicable) fulfill the following duties.

  1. Prepare prop, furniture and costume lists in consultation with both director and designer and ensure that suitable substitutes are available from the beginning of the rehearsal period.

  2. Prepare the rehearsal and ensure that the rehearsal space is correctly marked out in terms of the design.

  3. Draw up a rehearsal schedule in consultation with the director and ensure that details are communicated to all members of cast on an ongoing basis and that punctuality is encouraged.

  4. Draw up and distribute a contact list for everyone involved of the production.

  5. Ensure that the rehearsal space is kept clean and tidy at all times.

  6. Prepare a properly annotated prompt book through the rehearsal period. The prompt book must have all moves, unscripted pauses and technical cues clearly marked up.

  7. Maintain ongoing liaison between the directors and designers and production manager as well as between cast and management / publicity in absence of a company manager.

  8. Assist the production department with sourcing of props, furniture and costumes as needed.

  9. Ensure that he/she is familiar with all lighting/sound equipment that he/she will be required to operate once in the theatre and arrange training with the senior stage manager in advance if needed.

  10. Supervise the move-in to the theatre in collaboration with the production manager /senior stage manager and take responsibility for the venue keys, the opening/locking of the venue and the security of any tools used in the venue during the set-up and for the duration of the run.

  11. Allocate dressing rooms and ensure that they are clean and usable before the first call.

  12. Assist at the plotting session by walking as required by the lighting designer.

  13. Ensure that all technical and dress rehearsals are started promptly and that the director is kept aware of break and finish times.

  14. Ensure that all technical notes from the director and designers are communicated to the production manager and dealt with as expediently as possible.

  15. Ensure that the stage and back stage areas are properly cleaned prior to the final dress rehearsal and kept that way for the entire run of the production.

  16. Assume responsibility for the running of the production, ongoing maintenance and the acquisition of the running props as necessary.

  17. Ensure that all calls are given timeously and that cast is informed of correct performance times daily in advance.

  18. Assume responsibility for ensuring that costumes are delivered to and collected from the laundry/dry cleaners as needed.

  19. Communicate any problems in respect of either show or venue to the appropriate day staff through the performance report.

  20. Ensure that all borrowed/hired props, furniture and equipment are returned in good order at the end of the production run.

  21. When not engaged on a production, assist the production department in terms of pre-production for other shows and the general maintenance/organization of the production department as determined by the production manager. This may include driving company vehicles providing you hold a driver's license.

i guess shortlisted people will be told at the interviews...there's nothing as boring as a job being advertised without indicating its level (okay pay)....you get worked up n ge o fihla ko negotiating table motho o go botja ka R10K mncim...
