The scourge of SA reality TV prizes

Reality Scourge Pic

When Britain's Got Talent airs in the UK viewers get to win a snack pack of enviable prizes. Here's an example of one of their prize packages:

- A flat screen TV,
- A Blu-ray home theatre system,
- An iPad,
- An iPod with a docking station,
- A Nintendo Wii with a selection of games,
- A Sony PSP2 with a game,
- 7 inch portable DVD player,
- Tickets to the Britain’s Got Talent semi-finals,
- Automatic entry into a competition to win £50 000 at the end of the season (R652, 251)

All that for one lucky viewer. A similar prize every episode.

What happens in reality shows in South Africa? Not even the winner or finalists of a show win such a generous pack. No, no, instead they get to suffer borrowed cars, restaurants on loan and vouchers that can only get them bottom-of-the-range goods.

The scourge of South African reality TV prizes first hit with the fashion design show The Cut: South Africa in 2006 when the series offered the winner a borrowed car from Woolworths.

If you didn't see the horror - believe it, it happened.  The winner won a job at Woolworths for a year (fair enough), cash on a Woolworths card (cool) and the use of a car for the year of their job.

Thankfully Woolworths saw the light and graciously changed the prize after a rant about it on TVSA. The prize changed to the winner winning a Tata car of their own.

Reality winners haven't been as lucky recently though because shows have been increasingly embracing their inner Scrooge. This year we've seen an avalanche of them with three shows grabbing top spot as Most Stingy.

Recipe for heartburn

The first is MasterChef SA obviously. As you may know, there's been a controversy surrounding the winner Deena Naidoo's prize with allegations that M-Net misled contestants about what the prize was exactly. The question at the centre of it all: was the prize to own the MondoVido restaurant at Monte Casino or to be in charge of it?

My take on it is that it's a crap prize either way. Just because someone loves cooking and wants to win the title of MasterChef doesn't mean that they want to uproot their lives and move into the world of management.

Organising staff, bossing people around etc - these are a large part of running or owning a restaurant and isn't something that the majority of contestants seemed interested in. The prize should simply have been a more substantial cash haul. Even R500,000 would have been a better prize.

“Give the dream back!”

My Top Billing Dream Presenter Search also delivered a whammy of Cheap when Jonathan Boynton-Lee won the recent reality search. Winning the presenting gig was cool but car prize sucked.

Both Jonathan and a viewer won the use of a Mercedes for six months - not even a year as in The Cut. It's much worse than not winning anything because now they're going to have it taken away from them. Picturing the day that it happens fills me with a sense of dread for them - not the way a prize should make you feel.

That’s all you can afford?

And don't get me started on the prizes that the Idols Top 10 got ... the package included R5000 from Yamaha for a guitar or keyboard. What sort of guitar or keyboard can you get for that? Not top of the range that's for sure. Even if it wasn't tops but somewhere in between, that would be okay. Just don't give the very least that you can possibly give.

The thing I don't understand is why any company would do it. You'd think that they'd want their brand to come across as looking successful.

Generous and bold prizes suggest that they're affluent, popular and successful whereas stingy prizes suggest the complete opposite. Why would a company want that as part of their marketing message? If you ask me they’d be much better served to stay out of the competition game if they can’t afford a prize.

THIS IS THE REALITY OF REALITY TV, WHY BOTHER TORTURING YOURSELF WITH IT. TUTH IS WE ARE ADOPTING THESE KIND OF SHOWS FROM COUNTRIES THAT HAVE MONEY, THAT HAVE BUYING POWER. MERCEDES WILL NOT GIVE ITS CAR TO A WINNER FOR A YEAR OR FOR FREE AS A PRIZE IF THERE WON'T BE ANY RETURN IN REVENUE. IN AMERICA AND UK, ESPECIALLY AMERICA THEY WOULD GIVE ANYONE WHO APPEARS ON TV SOMETHING BECAUSE THEY KNOW THE REVENUE WILL BE HUGE. IT WILL QUADRUPLE WHAT THEY'VE ACTUALLY GIVEN. THE KARDASHIANS FOR THAT MATTER... THEY MAKE THEIR MONEY LIKE THIS IN THEIR REALITY SHOWS. THEN WE DO THESE SHOWS IN SA - FOR WHAT? YOU LOSE MONEY INSTEAD OF GAINING. AND WE FAKE IT, CREATE THE HYPE, WHEN WE KNOW THERE IS NO MONEY. TRUTH IS: WE ARE FAKE. WE KEEP SAYING AMERICANS ARE FAKE - WE ARE THE BIGGEST FAKES.

You've said it all Tashi. It realy is all pitiful. Perhaps we need to ask, how much do the show creators/producers and the stations get from the shows (advertisers etc), and how much does the price take away from what they get, their profits etc.

@GA ... slippery slide you are entertaining.
One should NEVER look at another person's earnings ... regardless of comparitives or other tempting factors that suggest it.
NEVER look over the fence , and NEVER look in anyone's pocketbook.

But its not all bad cos I was watching Its Gospel Time on Sunday and there were winners from I want to sing gospel I think they got R250k if I remember correctly and a recording deal.
Cash is king just give them cash and stop all these nonsense prizes.

Well Vuss, I don't even expect the answer to be true if I were to ever get one:D. But knowing what the rough figures are would shed more light on the issue. Are they ripping us/our contestants off when they are raking in millions, or are thry giving what they can afford?. I'm Simon Cowell, Mark Burnett make 100s of millions of dollars hence they can afford a million dollar prices and viewer prices, and yes relatively also ripping off...but what are our figures. Where is Tha-bang? I know he will be honest, unless he is part of the "inner circle" now.

Thanks Tashi for raising this issue. I didn’t know about the TB Merc thing. I thought TB was big!!! Tjo! I’m disappointed shame.
Yes some prices are fair but some are not fair.

Good thing I didn't make it to the top 100, imagine all the unpaid leave at work, my bills?Eish you can say that agian waitse!!!

It's really pathetic if u think about it. I mean where are these R150 sms going? Sending a sms to MTN is 60cents so I always wonder where it is going. It’s like lotto. I mean how many people play lotto in each province?

@GA ... I completely disagree with everything in your last statement.

how much a person makes is of no relevance to the actions they take iin spending it.
The biggesst mistake most of black humanity makes ... ys black ... is run comparitives .... make your own, then decide how to spend it.

your position is like complaining to Tashi that the X million she might be earning from owning TVSA entitles you to influence her spending choices ... just because you participate in her website... and that is wrong.

The quality of prizes might need improving ... but looking over at what other make is projecting one's own frustrations at one's lack of (or perceived lack of) personal development.

Leave those who earn more to do so ...

If one wishes to earn more .... make a plan to do so. ... just don't criticise those who have more for sharing less ... it is their prerrogative ... not shared space.

My point Vuss is that, if we had an idea... then we'd complain about the prices from an objective informed point. I'm not interested in the exact figures. I was inspired by the first commenters point that; VW will gladly give a car in USA because they will get more from it than they will in SA, its those specifics I'd realy like to know. Is the first commenters's view factual? Just how much to advertisers make fron giving away their products? how much do show creators and channels make from the companies for whom they advertise in SA? How much do the cellular networks make from the smses and how is it distributed?. I know in other countries they make millions, is it the case in SA. That's what I'm curious about. I have for a long time been curious about the quality of SA special effects in movies and I asked and asked untill I got the answer and I'm quite sympathetic to our filmmakers now because I get the bigger picture. I need more information about this as well, I don't care much bout the exact figures.

11 Sep 2012 11:40

Then when I'm informed, I can confidently say, the quality of prices is crappy or its what they can indeed afford. This isn't about dictating how they should spend their revenue, I need information so I can participate objectively in the dialogue... That Tashi and tvsa example is just out...

Top Billing is such a reputable brand to can fail to negotiate one car for a winner in return for mileage for the company. If Oprah could negotiate a car for every single member of her audience what was this compared to that really!!

Poor country or no poor country, someone is failing to do their job, finish and klaar.

We have set the price for our participation so low throughout the existence of popular media for so long ... it is the applicable status.

It matters not whether one is discussing beauty or children's contests ... the prizes in our environment are never worth their value in other costs.

It is our fault because we support the organizers.

Stop supporting the shows and make it a point the owners are aware why ... they will step up the quality of the prize and gifts.

It happens to be truly that simple.

That Tashi and tvsa example is just out...

I do not think so ...

Tashi raised a very important matter.

I don't see the contestants complaining about the prizes or moneys ...

They are the ones who should be complaining ...
not the audience, lol

We tend to have a wonderful talent at re-evaluating contracts AFTER signing them ... Read the fine print before you sign, and nobody will be sitting saying ... "I got the short end of the stick" ... truth is nobody gets the short end ...

People enter these shows to try their luck.

The real talent does not need reaiity shows to exploit their talent ... that is the record execs job!

It probably has a lot to do with why the world is always screwing us over ..

And will continue to do so.

In my mostly jaded opinion ...

ALL reality shows are about and for chancers and taking that shot at the chance ....
The reality show circuit is all a giant Zama Zama to / for me.

Why should the producers be laying it all out for chance?

Someone must win ... at least something... a peanut at least to diplay accomplishment.

It happens to be that the producers / owners win more than anyone else ...

So be it ...
Kudos for them pulling all the pieces together and everyone else considering it entertaining ...

That is what the industry of entertainment is all about ...

@VusiK: I agree with you 100%

TVSA, like any other website, is generating income. Content is the A in ABC of SEO for generating that income. Bloggers, acting as freelance writers, provide a great majority of the content for TVSA. And they are doing for it free.

As an African freelance writer who is earning quite a bit of money on WP2 sites (American sites ) and Constant Content, it boggles my mind why someone would spend 1-3 hours (sometimes even longer) to create an article and then hand it over to someone else’s site for them to benefit from it in terms of traffic and ultimately earn revenue from it.

That same article, with the application of some very basic SEO tips, can earn you continuous revenue on your own site or a WP2 site. Or you can sell it. For instant cash.

So, what are the benefits of writing for TVSA? Except for providing content, for free, for a site that is obviously doing very well.

@Name here is that cash from KFC or meal vouchers that's hilarious lmao

VusiK
12 Sep 2012 09:25

@Whitesockgirl ...

My point is ... I don't count anyone's money relative to the product I see.

We provide TVSA free content & contribution... it will generate income ... how & why such revenue is spent is irelevant ... should never be raised in debate.

BMW or KFC, or Pep stores provide free content to these shows as prizes and gifts ... it is the producer's / owner's prerrogative ... how the free content is used.

And THAT decision has NOTHING TO DO WITH HOW MUCH MONEY THE PLATFORM OWNERS ARE EARNING and making.

Hey Tash ! .... did not mean to drag you in as subject matter ... but it is difficult for people to relate sometime without having a "near home" example.

You are very well on your way to your 2nd billion Whitesockgirl !!!!

You see entertainment and the many businesses in it for what they truly are ...

... and that has very little to do with entertainment.

WhiteSockGirl
12 Sep 2012 11:14

@VusiK

Tashi opened that door when she wrote this article.

She questioned the prices, ie rewards that participants on reality/entertainments receive. So, why shouldn’t I question the ‘rewards’ that bloggers receive from participating/contributing on TVSA?

What are the rewards for writers on TVSA exactly?

The exploitation of freelance writers, by website owners, is a hot topic on several online platforms.

The majority of writers are blaming us, writers from developing countries for the exceptionally low fees on offer. The general consensus is that we happily accept the low fees, and will bend backwards for a contract to the value of $1 for a 500 word article. Little do they know that some of us actually will happily write for free on sites like TVSA!

<<You are very well on your way to your 2nd billion Whitesockgirl !!!!>>
Really, that was necessary?  OK,...

I will never be a millionaire, billionaire, but at least the earnings from my content on WP2 sites and Constant Content is money in my account and not someone else’s. And I am being able to make a difference because I am donating 50% of all my earnings to charity.

VusiK

@Whitesockgirl

What are the rewards for writers on TVSA exactly?

None ... unless you are salaried, contracted, or a shareholder.
Everyone is a passenger blissfully bouncing through their various somewhat disconnected escapist/ entertainment-gasms

It is never easy to step back and see the world for what it truly is ... it takes massive, highly trained effort.

<<You are very well on your way to your 2nd billion Whitesockgirl !!!!>>
Really, that was necessary?
You know the various pieces that separate the achievers (financially) , and the passengers (The rest of the planet) ...
It happens to be the difference between someone working on their 2nd billion vs someone still figuring the angle to getting their first ...
The pieces are already there and in place ....
as the players in electronics say ... all you lack is a killer-eye & a killer-App at the killer-time.

I will never be a millionaire, billionaire, but at least the earnings from my content on WP2 sites and Constant Content is money in my account and not someone else’s. And I am being able to make a difference because I am donating 50% of all my earnings to charity

My business partner is awesome consistent, conservative talent.
It took me 5 or so years grooming him for what I saw in him ....
On Sunday ... he was chilling with me ... in the time we spent that evening ... he created 4 businesses, which will be killer businesses ....
He is a 100% worthy successor to my desk ...

If you are not working on your 2nd billion ...
Who & what is in your way (Besides your self confidence?)
