On Special Assignment this Tuesday:

Episode Title: Hambani Makwere - Kwere (Go Away Foreigners)
Date: Tuesday, 20 May, 2008
Time: 21h30
Channel: SABC 3

The official toll of the violence in Alexandra is bleak. At the time of this release (Wednesday, 14 May) 61 people had been arrested, 4 cases of rape were reported , 3  people were dead and 1000 people were sheltered in the police station. Since then the figures have gone up.

It paints a horrifying picture of a breakdown in tolerance for especially African immigrants amongst South Africans.

The attacks against foreigners in Alexandra are the latest in outbreaks of xenophobia that have wreaked havoc in townships across South Africa . Two years ago Somalis traders were burnt and their shops looted in the Eastern and Western Cape . Informal businesses owned by Mozambicans in Witbank were also targeted. Recently residents of Atteridgeville burnt the homes of foreigners.

The events in Alexandra are part of a rising trend in violence against refugees or illegal immigrants.

It is hard to separate a community within a community, so ordinary South Africans have been caught in the cross-fire. Attacked and destitute, they have been mistaken as foreigners, or else put under fire for being sympathisers.

This week’s in a Special Report, Special Assignment goes to the heart of the problem. On both sides we see people trying to make a better life for themselves, thrown into conflict by poverty and frustrated dreams.

The idea that foreigners are taking resources that rightfully belong to South Africans is deeply entrenched. Angry mobs armed with pangas, sticks and golf clubs are determined to drive foreigners out. “Hambani Makwerekwere” (Go away foreigners) is their war cry.

The report is written and produced by: Sasha Wales-Smith.

Never did I imagine there'd come a time when I'd be embarrassed to be a South African. People are dying, children are suffering, for what?

20 May 2008 01:10

U can say that again Rene and when i think of it  cant find any solution coz this is spreading rapidly and what we are going to hear now is that all provinces in South Africa are attacking the foreigners.

Isnt this similar to what Mugabe (the African leader) did to the white farmers in Zimbabwe, i aint ashamed to be a South african bcoz i do realize that what goes around comes around. When Mugabe did that, did anyone ask mbeki to intervene

Hlehle
20 May 2008 01:18

Andi01 why these people are'nt attacking white foreigners coz they r foreigners too. What Mogabe did was his problem these people have no right to do what they are doing even though Mogabe did that.We ae all black after all why are we doing this, its not going to take us anywhere why?

Never did I imagine there'd come a time when I'd be embarrassed to be a South African.

It is indeed very embarassing Rene.  seeing those women carrying their crying infants on the news everyday breaks my heart . How can humans treat each others so ruthless mara?  How will we ever Nkosi sikelel'iAfrika with pride again(what is there to be blessed?)when black people can't be civil to each other.

I'm not sure I understand what you are saying here. How does this relate to what is happening?  please explain(i'm slow sometimes)

For me, wether or not its the same, doesnt really matter, the fact is, its wrong and inhuman. I have now seen that ignorance, and not money, is the root of all evil.

What hurts the most is that people are also attacked because of their skin colour. A man from Venda was attacked bcoz he's black in colour and speaking Tshivenda so the attackers attack him becos they don't even know the language but they claim to be South Africans. What is happening is embarrassing.

20 May 2008 01:27

why these people are'nt attacking white foreigners coz they r foreigners too?

Hlehle that's the one thing i keep asking myself, u'll neva hear white people saying " when are those damn germanians going home, they are taking our jobs" it's the black people who have a problem with their own kind. Why are black people so uncomfortable with their colour, with their own people. Is it jealousy, bitterness or what.

20 May 2008 01:28

The only solution I can think of is for these illegal (most of them are) immigrants from Zim to go back home and vote in the next election n make peace in their country... most of these pple are criminals, they came here illegally which makes them criminals...

The killings n the violence is unjustifiable but them staying here illegally is unjustifiable either.

20 May 2008 01:37

Its inhuman indeed. How do you expect us to raise our children in this cruelity. We have been through this why again. Does'nt the colour of the skin matter now & we are all Africans no matter what. That will never change, i cant even sing 'Nkosi Sikelel'iAfrika' Proudly becoz of this. Where is the unity black people?

20 May 2008 01:37

i dont understand how anyone could be so heartless...how is killing and beating them up gonna slove anything?...these people are humans and they need our love and support....s.a is not the only country with foreigners,we in Botswana have a lot of Zimbabweans,we are all Africans and we need to support each other.

Renegade
20 May 2008 01:38

why these people are'nt attacking white foreigners coz they r foreigners too?

China city and dragon city are full of foreign chinese people, but none of these atttacker say anything. And as Zozozo said, it really is black people who have issues with their own kind. These borders that seperate us, that divide SA and Zim and Mozambique, are they not just walls? Then we speak of how white people are racist, but we turn around and do this. We expect European nations to take us seriously as a developing nation, but we do this. Eish, I hate this, i feel like i'm preaching to the converted, because perpetrators of such voilence are out in the streets doing nothing to further themselves, but waiting for government to help.

Guys, I have a friend I work with here who is from Zim. She went home recently to visit her family, and she tells me that the situation there really is horrible, although people are just living each day to get by. MDC supporters are getting killed in Zim, and for Mugabe, if you left the country, you are an enemy.

@KITCO: What hurts the most is that people are also attacked because of their skin colour
I was afraid this would happen. Somone warned that a civil war is on the cards.
God bless Africa.

Criminal rate was high b4 the Zimbabweans came here. Let us learn to sort out problems without blaming forreigners. THOUSANDS  of youth were without jobs b4 the Zimbabweans came here. What is new now? Who got fired and in her/his place they hire a forreigner? Who r we to criticize ?    I THINK THIS  has something to do with jealousy becoz these people are hardworkers, they don't always say GOVERNMENT this, GOVERNMENT that, INSTEAD OF COPY  a gud thing from them, siyababulala. After all this is nobody's land, it is God's land. They have a right 2 b here.

Illiteracy makes people do unexplainable things.

I was at SPAR last night, just as the shop was about to close and the Cashiers  (South Africans) were talking to their driver asking if he would be able to go into their area (Ramaphosa) peacefully...they were all so worried and it's really bad coz I could see how scared that driver was...telling them that he has just come from there and it was hectic, he didn't know if it was safe enough to go back but he had to take them. "As'hambeni sizobona khona."
Wish these hooligans would know that this is not only affecting the so called "kwere kwere's" It's affecting South Africans too!

I was planning an article on this but I might as well comment here. I really believe these aren't just xenophobic attacks but there is indeed a third force involved here as well. I mean there is now a systematic shift in these attacks from one township to another. Someone's trying to prove some point at the expense of people’s lives and livelihoods. What the prize is anyone's guess I have my theories which I will not divulge as yet or maybe never.

At the root of all this is how lawless our country has become. A lot of people come in through our porous borders illegally and the worst case is being deported only to come back again. I’m sure they didn’t count on the madness ever happening though. Then some dumb heartless South Africans torture and kill other human beings with the attitude "who's gonna do what" to us. If the government fails to do it’s duties of enforcing the law at all levels then it becomes their responsibility to protect all these people whether they are here illegally or not. But they’ve proven over and over that they can’t protect anyone or anything not even the president’s residence… *sigh*

This situation really makes me understand why Thabo Mbeki said it's not HIV that causes AIDS, it's poverty.

...treating people equally and with respect goes even beyond education.
but that is the only explanation i could come up with...considering the fact that the reasons given include "they take our jobs"  How pathetic!

I do feel sad of whats happening, after all, we are all humans, i do however feel that many black peopel are racist???, now that black foreigners are being attacked we cry, ubuntu, why are we attacking africans, as if to say white person born in zimbabwe is not an african. Zim people were with mugabe when he threw out farmers out of their farms and evicted them, did any1 cry ubuntu then NOOO, but now its South Africans trying to fight for whats legally theirs all of a sudden we monsters. I am against people being killed, but I beleieve that we shud look at both sides of the coin. And also I beleieve that Africans should stay in their countries and try to resolve matters there, rather than voting for leaders, who at the end mistreat them and they come to SA and coz influx, i bliv dat people shud stand on their own 2 feet. What zim's dont realise is that by leaving home, they r givin Mugabe more power to crucify the remaining few.
Being too nice is not good sometimes, coz people take advantage.

<<<Did Sbu have to comment or he could have given other people a chance to say sumthing coz he is always talking, Tumisho cud have done that>>> It was his initiative, his idea, he was punting it on his show so it made sense that he should say something.

The foreign countries should learn from us, we have overcome the worst, teh apartheid goverment, we stood up and eventually we succedded, yes some of us ran, and some of us went to the foreign countries to be trained as soldiers and some went overseas to get better eductaion to improve our chances of getting rid of that goverment. the rest that stayed behind fought, hence June 16, hence the death of Chris Hani and others, when we had our struggle, there was blood even then, but I am proud to say the blood lost was worth it, coz our soldiers died while battling, but sadly this couldnt be said about our foreign brothers who choose to run from their problems. If in the number of students that were killed in June 16, there was a fraction of foreign student, helping us fight, in the spirit of UBUNTU AND AFRICANISM, i would be saying somethiong else now, but they werent, we fought for the liberation of this country and they just wanna come and reap without ploughing, thats unfair, not even a little bit.

most unfortunately there is the Bad and the worst: in the deep Eastern Cape, foreigners are killing women and teenagers, no i put that soo midly..women are being raped ..have their wombs taken out while they are still alive and being left to die.. a cousin of mine watched as his gran, his mom, and his older sister were being raped and watched their wombs being harvested...yep!

now the biggest problem is this is a big scam which is being pulled by foreigners..and the worst is the responce which came from one of these guys when he got caught as he said "you will never get to all of us as we are spread all over SA.." AND HE SAID THAT SMILING...

MAGENGE anger is filling SA hearts..we are losing women all in the name of muti

Don't get me wrong i don't condone what is happening in Alex but bafethu people are tired(even though innocent lives are being uprooted..)

what solution can we give?? i know mass killings are not the solution...but where do we go from here as  brothers and sisters??

For me there is a third force behind the attacks, someone out there is giving us proof that indeed Thabo Mbeki has failed as a leader and negotiator.

The criminal element: He blatantly denied that war on crime has been lost, hence the murders and rape.

Civil War: In 2006, many Somalians were brutally attacked in Cape Town and Research analysts compiled a report warning government to address the issue of civil war and xenophobic attacks, but like the warning from Eskom, he turned a blind eye.

The issue on Zimbabwe: He told the world that there was no crisis in Zim and he stood in parliament and reassured 4 billion people that Zimbabwe will never affect South Africa; well I guess the neighbors’ dog has come to roost in your house Mr. President.

The truth and reconciliation Commission: many people called for the establishment of a rehabilitation fund to be able to facilitate the healing of many South Africans who were affected by the apartheid regime. Rehabilitation of the thousands of MK’s who were trained to be kill and suddenly left on the field to fend for themselves whilst their masters enjoy the fruits of their labour.

I think this so true the reason is to create and cause havoc in the country to take the media focus away from the real devil in the country.. I think? Zuma needs to keep the focus off him and provoke the country into chaos bring the our president down and then step into office making false promises..

He wont let them open the files they found in Mauritius because they will find a lot of bad things going on.. they want to disband the Scorpions why then what's going to happen next.

Our country is in a national state of emergency right now and if we born SA can plead with the United Nations world focus is on us at the moment.. What a shame??

I heard one zim girl saying she did not in to vote because it would not have helped anyway and i wondered how many were thinking like her. morning all

i think you guys have said it all. i'm not ashamed to be a south african because i'm not hte one who's guilty of these horrific crimes. govt nayo always take their time with serious issues and look how things have completely gotten out of hand. i have a friend who's dark dark dark, looks kwerekwerish (sorry but can't find any other word to describe)...she's been arrested i don't know how many times because she didn't have an id and they thot she was kwerekwere. and the woman's a 100% south african. problem is she doesn't even speak any of our languages cos her step father's white and she was raised by him and her mother but her mother's one of those that didn't bother teaching her her own mother tongue. so everytime the cops come and ask her q's and she can't answer (cos she doesn't understand) she always finds herself in a jail cell. ths started happening when she was just 18. you can only imagine her state of mind with all of this going on.

what diff does it make if u r kwere kwere anyway? these people forget for yrs they were in the same situation and were welcomed with open arms by these same people, given homes, an education, jobs...and this is how we say thak you? that completely sucks. it's immoral. pity we're all preaching to people who don't even understand, who don't care to understand. yerr!!!

Last yr my Company has suffered because of them. There was this Foreigner Security Guy.Everyday when we lock off work,he started his own phone busines with the expense of the company. The managers we all over us saying that the rates of the phone are so hight. Only to find out one day that after six there is a long Queu (spelling) of the other foreigner who came here to make international calls. Now the Company who hired the security is paying all the phone bill for last year and guy was sentenced only six month...

Hlehle;I don't think it matters who catches the spot light right now,as long as the massage is being spread and something is being done.If these so called ''makwere kwere'' are the ones doing most crimes then I guess the mobs are just ''innocently sweeping the streets with human brooms then''.We are the guilty ones,us and our guavament.A lot of our fellow brothers kill, rape and rob whites but you don't see the whites killing every black person infront of them because they know that not all blacks are bad. When will we stop blaming others for our lack of intelligence, pride and our stupidity.I pray that God forgives us for doing what we don't want done to us and that he ends this horrifying horror and punishes those that are guilty.

i  really  feel  for  those   foreigners, and  where  is UBUNTU    SOUTH  AFRICANS,
those  are  our fellow  brothers  and sisters,  we  should  accomodate  them as  there  is crisis  in  their countries, lets  put  our selfs  in their  shoes,  imagine  if there  will  be war  in S.A  don't you  think  we will run  to  neighbours countries?

as for  jobs   i don't belive  they  are  taking  our jobs,SOUTH AFRICANS  are  lazy, we  sit @  home  and  complain  with  jobs,  those  people come  here  and sell tomatoes, basket's   flowers, blankets  etc ,they go   house  to house and we buy  those things. They  are  creating  jobs   for themselves  unlike  us especially  woman  ,we  depend  on  our  bodies   to  make  money.South  Africans  lets  use  our mind  and  think  ahead.remember  WHAT  COMES  AROUND  GOES  AROUND next time  it will be  us seeking  accomodation   in their countries.

Eish, Shai, cell phones are unblocked for only R100 in Durban, so now the latest trend is that people claim to have their phones stolen, then they get a new one and the old one gets blocked, but all they do is go to a KK cell phone shop and it's unblocked and they resell it........*nc nc shaking my head*........but still innocent lives shouldn't suffer for a few *ok ok more than a few* bad people!!!!

The problem is not only with Zim people there are other foreign nationals here who came solely to do crime. They are drug lords, they are prostituting and they take young girls to sell them to slavery in their countrys. Our borders and foreign affairs are not helping either because they do not do enough to curb this. I also heard on tv yesterday that they are fighting back,The foreigners and i think this could be a start of full on war. This cant be good for our economy at all

I am with Andio1 100%...if the Zimbabweans don't think for themselves nobody will. Its high time they go back home and help Tsingarai to get Robert Mugube out and stop blaming South Africans on their problems. Yes the legal professional ones should stay as they are adding value to our country ...but the illegal ones who raom around causing crime into our country should be deported A.S.A.P .

most unfortunately there is the Bad and the worst: in the deep Eastern Cape, foreigners are killing women and teenagers, no i put that soo midly..women are being raped ..have their wombs taken out while they are still alive and being left to die.. a cousin of mine watched as his gran, his mom, and his older sister were being raped and watched their wombs being harvested...yep!

Could be some sense of truth in what you are saying...some of them have been accused for witchcraf in the townships and brutal crime.\  Why all of a sudden after 1994..there is high crime rate in the country. Yes some of our brothers are responsible for crime but not the hardcore crime that sells drugs, hijack people.

For those who are blaming JZ....why, is he responsible for chaos in this country???

The sad ish is that the criminals and jobs snatchers they are trying to get rid of they will never catch them and they will keep targeting vulnerable women &children who dont  even know how to hold a gun and rob a person. The makwere-kwere criminals are way too smart for some sagila carrying person. You will find out that 99% of the people they have attacked already have never commited a single crime in their lives and the big masterminds are walking down Rockey street in Yeoville still taking our phones with force.

@Onna, the foreigners you are referring to (drug lords & fraudsters) are not really feeling the hardships experienced by the poor foreigners in the township as they are way too smart/sophisticated for that *bleep!*. Its really freaky for some of us who stay in and around Hillbrown/JHB CBD & Yeoville, wonder how's Awelani?

I have mixed feelings now about the situation. Especally after reading your replies. But my greatest feeling is ANGER. Anger torwards the goverment, anger towards Sout Africans. If we ever had a reliable goverment we would never have had the influx of illigal immigrants. It all starts with the blue collar workers salaries. It starts at the borders:Bribery monies. Then the Home Affairs and then SAPS. Police who have nothing to do(and there is so much to do) would feel up their vans with our African brothers. Once they reach their target they make them pay between R150 and R250 and let them go back to where they found them illegally. If you don't have the money you are deported and you will come back tomorrow.

It sucks. I wish South Africans had another way of dealing with the situation instead of burning up and killing these people. Yes they have turned Yeoville into Nigeria. They are making the offramps uncormfortable with those fongkongs(well atleast they are working)They have brought in those ugly plastic shoes that go with bags(Market street). They don't mind to work for R50 a day. They sit at the robots with babies or their blind relatives(This one irritates me like hell).
The ones with money(especially the N) think they own places like Moloko and Sankai(whatever spelling) .

I just had to break that reply cos I was going on and on. The N people are here to make money in everyway possible. They have studied South Africans. They know South African women love money and would give their bodies for money. They have no respect for SA women. Thanks to our foolish material driven sisters we are regarded as prostitutes by these people. Our SA people claim that these people know how to treat women. By what? Buying them stuff, keeping them under 24hour surveillance and beating them up? Haibo! We have lost it. They treat their women better. We can never get close to what their women do. Their women can shake it better and umuthi is king gubo. These are the kingpins of corruption. AboMr I own a computer shop but I drive an X5 and an SLK?

Some of you will hate/grill me for this but its my opinion and I'm stickin to it
I was talking to one guy (who's also a friend in the township) he's from Mozambique (he cant speak proper zulu but he can carry a conversation...anyways we were watching the Alex news and he was talking about how some of the Mozambiquan (sp) Zimbabweans and Angolans in our township deliberately chose to stay in one area and so much so  that the locals have given that street some kewre-kwereish name...and I think thats what triggers the local anger/jelousy where locals are feeling that they (foreginers)are taking over their own territitory, and what makes it worse is when locals see these guys in groups going to work when they are jobless....even this friend of mines agrees that its a matter of timing and considering that you're in a country thats better than yours but it also has its societal issues, unemployment ect  (he even tried telling them to "blend in" and not try to isolate themselves.. and they said they are not afraid (well my township is not as volotile or even as "poor" as Alex..so we dont mind them (YET...LOL)and the minute locals think you're doin better or you're more comfy than they are...the chances are they'll get nasty....i think its just human nature to protect its environment (not sayin its right but...it just happens...and maybe thats why the white foreigners are not attacked because you wont see them galavanting all over our townships (or surbubs)like they own it, or maybe I'm wrong. Anywyas my friend says he's happy with mixing with the locals instead of following his "brothers" clique all the time  -and you cant miss them espesh when they are unkept and dirty like when they've just arrived   and y'all know whats the story about ll of them being brothers somehow...LOL..He even told me how they cross the boarder  -and not all of them are from War-torn countries, its just poverty mostly  (acording to my friend)  so they risk -crocodiles in rivers and being eaten alive by the wild animals and they travel at night blending in tarvens an clubs till the morning where they take a taxi and "voila" they are your neigbhour in the morngin and you dont know where they came from...and your other foreign neibha will just say "its my brother".....and NOnny...dont get me started on the Durban Point story...the street kids (and some township girls who are lookin for jobs )are being used like nobody's buisness by the same nigerians and whatnot....
INASMUCHAS i hate the Alex violence I think our government is very relaxed about the home affairs, refugees and illegal immigrants situation....and this is what their blase attitude has resulted in...people are angry...-LETS THINK FOR A SECOND WHY...ARE PEOPLE ANGRY..i just dont believe the attacks are by only criminals  I think some locals share the same feelings but have been tolerant all along....I'm just not convinced that all these people chacing after hundreds of kwerkwere's are criminals......eh eh..we have to look at both sides of the story  but our emotions have taken over and the violonce iscertainly not a pleasant experience.....but still

While they are hiding at the police stations, they should provide the police with their IDs and the illegal ones should be sent home.
Not that we are being insensitive but the way you enter a person's private place should clarify a lot.I mean how can I enter my neighbours' residence through the fence, destroy his fence and burst water pipes and leave that for him to repair and enter his yard and litter around like I own the place?

That is wrong. The illegal ones should be sent back home.

20 May 2008 04:37

As a South African living in West Africa, I am embarassed by the fact that my people are killing their fellow Africans. What is worse is that I am also a "kwere"/foreigner here so how can I expect my fellow African brothers and sisters to be welcoming towards me when my countrymen are killing theirs? The problem with us black/African people is that we have an inbred hatred of ourselves and a seriouse inferiority complex. Why else would we attack our fellow human beings and more so, africans? Other countries are laughing at our arrogance of thinking we can lead this Continent when we can't even tolerate other Africans in our country. What happened to putting our money where our mouth is?

Yes, some foreigners are criminals (as is the case in any prosperous country which is surrounded by poor countries) but many just want to make an honest living. Let's admit that our people are ignorant and are givento knee-jerk reactions. It doesn't help that our leaders have a terrible tendency of burying their heads in the sand (e.g. Crime, AIDS, energy crisis, economy, Zim, xenophobia etc.) probably hoping that the problems will just disappear on their own.

Let's also explore the possibility that there is a 3rd force involved. After all, the Africans won't be the only ones reluctant to come to Mzansi for 2010. Pretty soon we'll hear that Australia or New Zealand have once again offered to  host the WC due to the violence in South Africa.

Guys, let's not look for simplistic answers and try and blame every problem in South Africa on Zuma and his so-called camp. The movement is co-hesive and the failure of Mbeki is the failure of the ANC and with the elections coming next year, I think Zuma sabotaging Mbeki would be tantamount to shooting the ANC in the foot.

South Africa has many enemies, but Jacob Zuma is not one of those enemies.

I THINK THIS has something to do with jealousy becoz these people are hardworkers, they don't always say GOVERNMENT this, GOVERNMENT that,
KITCO those were exactly my words yesterday. You know I was discussing this issue with a one of the passengers. I asked him what is it that the foreigners have done wrong. he counldn't answer then to my surprise he said no man these guys are taking our women. And that a women has an affair with them they never want an South African men. That is when I realised that this is just out of jealousy.

Cnglemothr----You will find out that 99% of the people they have attacked already have never commited a single crime in their lives and the big masterminds are walking down Rockey street in Yeoville still taking our phones with force

true so true..especially with the Nigerians in Point Durban and Hillbrow.....when interviewed by the media they'll act innocent, yet some of their brothers who are in twonships are trying to make a decent leaving while the city nigerians are skeeming plotting and planning all sorts of organised crime ...dang it just makes you angry though.....

HERE'S  MY SCARY TRUTH.....WE HAVE A POSSIBILITY OF HAVING A NUMBER OF ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS EQUALLING A NUMBER OF ONE SOUTH AFRICAN RACE/TRIBE  .....BY 2015...so this means more power to them...and ventually the'll be in parliament...(i'm ussually optimistic but now.....haayini man..DONT WE HAVE AN OBLIGATION TO PROTECT OUR COUNTRY...not thru VIOLENCE BUT PROPER GOVERNTEMNT REGULATIONS AND POLICING.....PHEW!!!!

Hi guys

I feel sad ,when i was still at Varsity, i was an exchange student in zimbabwe,
i was treated so nicely ,that even when i gratuated, the principaal of that school came to South africa for my gratuation party,

there were times when i was sick, i was treated by Zim doctors, most of our polititians, went to Exile, they stayed with these people,

its a pity that  i have to be the one experiencing this brutal killings and raping of innocent people that is happening in my location, and by the way i was born and bred in Alexandra ,the same street where these killings started, i can still here the screams of those human beings being kicked ,shot at because of being there so called makwerekwere

ivila liyajika, lemini iyeza ,sizolidinga usizo lwabo ngelinye ilanga.

I get ur point Sponono, but for me killing has never been an option no matter how angry I am so that's where my problem lies, so does the communities anger justify the lives that have been taken away?????

"and NOnny...dont get me started on the Durban Point story...the street kids (and some township girls who are lookin for jobs )are being used like nobody's buisness by the same nigerians and whatnot...."

@ Sponono - As much as it's all good to blame Nigerians for the women that are being used, but some of them bayathanda, coz at the age of 18 and above I am sure u have a clear picture of what is right and wrong and when. So I blame the women being "used" or rather allowing themselves to be used as much as the corrupt as the foreigners. I know a gal, that we resides in Point Road, we were at tertiary wit her and she dated a Nigerian coz she was exposed to them allot coz we have a Res at Point, so she fell for their showing u with gifts and patience before baku davaze nswepu tactic……….LOL. Then suddenly she dropped out and she said she is making money now coz drugs are kept in her apartment because she has an angelic image and her place is the last place policemen would search. Now Spopo, do u blame the foreigners for all of that??? This lady has certainly allowed herself to be used coz she had an opportunity to say no, finish her studies and earn a decent living, kodwa akakwenzanga lokho, now I think it’s really sad and short-sighted of people to blame the Nigerians for everything.

You just take a walk down in Rockey street in Yeoville and ngabo bodwa and they shredded the place into pieces, there is clean up campaign but i dont see how its gonna work. I miss the days when yeoville was still yeoville all the celebs staying there and all the jol places going strong but now its just bamb'inkunzi all the way, uphuma eclubbini ungene kwimaxi taxi coz wesaba amazimbabwe. They own almost all the shops on Rockey Street and have turned them into fugly roadside shops like the one's you see on CNN when they depict bad Africa, when ever i am looking at BS's blog about Nigeria it reminds me of my own hood (yeoville) .

I STILL BLAME THEM to some extent....its easy to say one shud say no to this and that..but when you are raised by your parents they try to protect you from being exposed to certain things in life...e.g drugs, too much money ect..when you are not ready.. adn different people react diffrenetly to temptations  and because of diffrent reasons, e.g I also know a LOT of township (espesh umlazi)girls who were hooked (some almost) on drugs and prostitution thru nigerians -when they intiially were enticed by the Nigerians suposed TC and love and money...and theri backgroudns being what it is ...made it easy for their will to be weakened by these drug loads.. and NOnni THEY know who to go for....my point is THEIR PRESENCE IS LIKE THE DEVIL'S APPLE...just because YOU were not easiyl seduced to the easy life  doesnt mean every other girl will say no..YES it just depends on who you are and how strong willed you are....BUT REMOVE THE APPLE  and you wont have girls underage (some are as young as fourteen...now where's the reasoning capability at that age) being enticed to sell their bodies for money...(my cousin sister worked for them in one of their cellphone and jeans and luckly she can speak swahili and she could hear them plotting about some girls who came in looking for jobs  she only worked there for six months till her conscience got the better of her...coz she could see the excitement in these girls eyes when being told that they wil get a job and to bring id's and they would be given a pair of nice (fake) jeans and even a cell phone.....NOW COME on..and look even some local guys do these things...but to a large extent its nigerians becasue most are  really  here to make the quick buck (some even admit it and they cant be bothered by local girls..coz none could be their long lost sister/child   so there's no conscience .....eish my experience hasnt been too good with them guys so ....*sigh*

Anyway let me share a story: his other Nigerian guy was telling me a story 8 years ago: Ei my friendo, you know my girlfriend Nomsa. You see I was giving her sukalo from the backo(doggydo) and she starts wailing o saying "Ai khatele, ai khatele" You see me I am a man o I said: " No no my baby. Me I wont buy you Alcatel. Guys lets be real here, what is happening is degrading. Everytime i think of it i get sick to my stomach.

We should stop blaming foreigners for every wrong that happens here....most of these people do the most difficult jobs we wouldn't do just so they can feed their families.
@ ThinLine, your loved one was killed by Zimbabeans for a car, it's sad YES but NOT all of them are killers.
What do we say about innocent women and children that are raped and killed by our own brothers??? do we condone that because it's their own country so they can do whatever they like??? If you check the stats South Africans are NOT innocent . I was hijacked by some guys in June last yr and i am sure they were from ekasi coz of the language.....................my car was found @ a scrap yard in Tembisa that belonged to a well known thug called Thwala and he is 120% SA, no foreigner was involved.
What Bob did to the white farmers was indeed wrong BUT that was done by HIM, innocent people are now suffering coz of his actions, so why don't people attack hm when he comes down here and live the others alone.....

Some of us have relatives in European countries , now the thought of seeing them being abused the way these people are treated here scares the hell out of me....To be burnt to death in front of your children just bcoz you apparently took some1 else's job is disgusting.
WE NEED TO GROW UP BECAUSE THIS SHOWS HOW VERY MUCH BEHIND WE ARE AS A COUNTRY!!!!  Respect ourselves so we can respect others RESPECT RESPECT RESPECT, this is what Lucky Dube asked for... and South Africas were also involved in his shooting .

The foreigners are quick to say we lazy, but remember we were not lazy enough to fight and liberate this country, so that they can come here freely and start pointing fingers at us saying "we are lazy", we are xenophic" bhla bhla, talking about biting the hand that feeds you. if they are not lazy, why dont they start toy-toying day and night for mugabe (we used to), why dont the youth risk their ilives to bring mugabe down (1976, we did), why dont they do like the women did in Pretoria, fight agianst the pass. They also forget that it was the black president who allowed them in, bcoz P.W. Botha, would never have allowed that. Now they have the nerve to call us subhumans, just bcoz we are telling them that they need to go back to fight, yes some of tehm will die in the struggle, like some of us did, but ultimately, they will be free.

And whats worse now is that they suspect it could become a case of ethnic cleansing. Over the radio they were saying that A few Shangaan ppls shacks were burnt down in Ratanda or something. Where's the prosperity in that? SA has tha highest GDP in all of Africa and is by far the most technologically advance But even that can't help us if we as black people refuse to emancipate ourselves from the shackles of self-pity, laziness and downright stupidity. This is really unbecoming of a nation that has so much going for it, hopefully there really is no political agenda because the people who are suffering the most are those who ghold the least political power

you are sooo ungrateful to South Africa, remember you were given an opportunity to use those "brains" of yours.

I so disagree Andi01. Farai has done South Africa a big favour by creating employment for those 18-22 people he employs. It is no secret that the majority of South Africans are a lazy bunch of people that sit on their arses and expect hand-outs. Had he not come here and had he not created the opportunity he did for himself (and he did create this opportunity for himself-hence the name entrepreneur) none of the people he employed would have grabbed that same chance. Any person that is a not a South African national that is creating job opportunities is doing South Africa a BIG SERVICE!

Also remember that had you stayed in Zim that dream of ur could have been a nightmare and you know that, i think rathere than boasting about how many South Africans you employ, you should be grateful of the opportunity given to you, not every one had that opportunity.

He could have taken this elsewhere..Botswana, Zambia, Tanzania even overseas and i bet you he (or the likes of him) would not be subjected to the blatant ignorance and prejudice you display here.

Guys, am a Swazi and what's happening to those pple at Alex reminds me that I become a foreigner as soon as I cross the Ngwenya border. It's not just barbaric, its pathetic, and I think someone should stop it...pity the damage hs been done.
For the first time in my life, I've lost respect for a country I once loved. There goes Madiba's 27 years struggle, there goes Chris Hani's efforts, there goes everything SA has ever fought for....it's a shame, a disgrace and it brings tears to my eyes.
Indeed, cry the beloved country...lafa elihle kakhulu.

Whether foreigners are criminals is neither here nor there...they are human beings, they fled a difficult situation in their countries and they deserve to live. The whole world is watching and probably asking why you should be hosting the 2010 World Cup if you can't even love fellow Africans.

And the funny part is that we (foreigners) took care of the freedom fighters when they fled to our countries. Most were illegal immigrants, some even decided to settle here and when the time was right, they went back to SA. If anyone was killed, am sure it wasn't us....I never thought South Africans could be such SAVAGES!

20 May 2008 22:37

fascinating...there's been talk about how education, or lack thereof is part of what creates peoples responses - and how the xenophobic attacks are fuelled by those who are less innocent.

allow me to educate a few of you on how fellow African nations did their bit for S.A.- i've seen a lot of statements that only the South African political elite took cover in other African countries - this simply isn't true - there were HUGE communities of South Africans in various African countries - and i mean, HUGE. ordinary people who don't work in govt today, but were part of the liberation struggle from outside. they were the ANC and PAC's foot soldiers, they made up entire armies in different African countries - and news flash - they were financially supported by these governments... if you don't believe me, do your research....

politically - Mugabe (before the lunacy set in) and Samora Machel of Mozambique, Augustinho Neto of Angola all made the decision to support the liberation warriors. that made them a target for the American C.I.A. who were fighting communism, and South Africa's S.A.D.F. -

do you know that in the early 1980's, Mozambique , Zimbabwe and Angola were flourishing post-independent economies - but when they decided to support us, the Americans and apartheid government  gave tiny rebel factions a sh!tload of arms, military support and said 'go fight, destabilize these governments supporting S.A. liberators, wreak havoc throughout the country, so that the government cannot support the ANC, PAC etc...'

so - instead of a tiny little rebel faction that they could have easily dealt with, and gotten on with the business of building their countries, Mozambique and Angola had to deal with a HUGE rebel army supported by Pretoria and America,  that devastated their countries and dragged them into civil war for the next two centuries - all because they supported US!  AND THOSE ARE THE FACTS, FOLKS....

we know so little about our own history, it's frightening.  do your homework, find out what this country has REALLY been through, and how our history has affected the history of our neighbouring countries -
anybody remember or even KNOW ABOUT the cross-border raids of the 1980's? I do - i was a little girl in Gaborone in '85 when they came in and killed a bunch of Batswana and South Africans,  my 6 year old cousin was one of them. this happened on a regular, in Swaziland, Lesotho, Zimbabwe...please do not think that South Africans living in South Africa conquered apartheid alone - that's simply not true - yes, the ones who felt the most heat were obviously the ones living here. but to imply that soldiers, exiles, freedom fighters were chilling in Lusaka smoking cigars is just sad....

what goes around, surely comes around.... and it's very very scary what we can anticipate coming around....

sorry for long response, eish....

I am with you 100%. SA saw what Mugabe did to the white farmers and it worked, so they decided to try it to see if it will work. It worked, now everyone is crying foul. I am against violence wholeheartedly.

Remember this violence is mostly in the informal settlement and the level of poverty in those areas is high. For them this thing of trying to educate them about foreigners is a waste of time. This administration must own up and accept that they failed the SA citizen.

@ Simmone
Well said and well put. That is exactly why SA is in this mess.

@ sweetie my baby
Try and educate those people in the informal settlement and see if they will comprehend what you are saying. How do you explain what you are saying to someone who is angry and hungry? Do you think they will care to listen?

This thing of saying that other African counties helped SA during the apartheid era does not hold water for me. Those guys were refugees, they could not move freely in those countries. Their presence was well documented. Why did most of them return to SA?

The problem I have with this administration is the dropping of standards. Is it okay for illegal’s to stay here in SA? If not, then this administration should make sure they do everything possible to ensure that they do not stay here. If they cannot do that then I am sorry those that feel the pressure of illegals will resort to violence. After all they have learned this from Mugabe.

Only legal foreigners should stay.

I am dissappointed that some SA's call themselves lazy!!!!!, people please, we are not lazy, we just know how 2 stand up for our selves, we fought years of struggle and ill treatment and we have decided no more, we are just assertive and value ourselves, we dont take second best, we ask questions, why pay the white boy R20 and pay me R5, we dont accept slavery. For example a south african domestic will not work for less than R100, she'll tell the russian or whatever boss to shove it,and leave. but the foreignere lady comes after her lookign for a job.The russian lady will be like: The lady that left here wont work for R100 a day. The foreigner lady: what boss I would work for you for R30 a day. There slavery begins and 1 South african losses a priviledge. and the foreigners stab us in the back and sell us to the white community. They are perpetuating slavery in Africa. Yes we dont like selling in the streets, we demand the goverment to build malls for us, so tha we can have safe stores, btu the foreign people come ans say I'll take the streets, hell I ll even take teh pavement, so the goverment is like if people can sell on teh streets wjat are the malls for, and where does that money go,"into some MP's account".

You know who your biggest enemy is Andi? It;s all those people sitting in cushy jobs because they know the minister, mec, head of department, director or whoever else that makes the decisions that happens to be their blood relative.
The people without any skill that have slept their way to good jobs. The people that receive countless CVs for advertised positions, thrown them in the trash cans and send through their friend's CVs for consideration.

Any South African that has secured a good job for any reasons other than having the right education or the relevant experience or the potential to learn is taking away all those jobs South Africans are complaining about.

YES, YES, YES South Africans are a lazy lot and want handouts! There are countless shopping malls built throughout the country and you will not see a single South African looking for a cleaning job. No, they want to be managin a store when they know they have nothing to back up their expectations with.

South Africans take education for granted and faced with an applicant from Zimbabwe or any other African country that has impeccible qualifications, what is any one hiring to do? Take the South African for patriotic reasons? Uh uh, not gonna happen.

It's ironic how the people that FOUGHT for this liberation probably don't have a xenophobic problem-i'm talking about the people that were actually out there in the line of fire LITERALLY taking bullets for the end of apartheid.

Thank you very much TOXIC i couldn't have said it better myself. THIS IS SOOOOOOOOOO TRUE IT'S SCARY.

What most SAs do especially the ones in the townships is roam around the streets the whole day, go to a tavern and hangout with friends, DRINK DRINK DRINK, EAT , SH*T & SLEEP...................this is the story of most of our brothers & sisters. They blame the Government for everything that goes wrong in their lives including dropping out of school hence failing matric, it's all the Government's fault.....I MEAN REALLY NOW, WAT KIND OF THINKING IS THAT???
Who is the Government??? because WE ALL make the Government.

This is blatant cruelty wc is inhuman, barbaric & degrading & a gross violation of Fundamental Human Rights as entrenched in the Bill of Rights! For instance; Right to life, Human Dignity, Security & Freedom (to be free frm all forms of violance) Even such gruelling acts are strongly condemned by the Scriptures: "THOU SHALL NOT KILL''

Where is the "SPIRIT OF UBUNTU?'' The bottom line here is ''YOUR RIGHT ENDS WHERE MINE BEGINS, YOU DON'T HAVE A RIGHT OVER MY PERSON''. I HAVE AS MUCH RIGHT TO LIVE AS YOU SURELY DO!

We are responsible for our actions, those who perpetrated the merciless killings are downright criminals who lack humanity & understanding of meaning of Brother/Sisterhood! We shd take cognisance of the fact that our fellow African brothers are  the ones who aided & assisted us(SA Refugees who fled to Northern parts of Africa in fear of their lives) during the apartheid era!!!

THE KILLINGS SHD STOP, PERIOD..........!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i c da topic is a day old bt its never 2late 2 reply.

now these killings a way 2 senseless people should knw better than this especially black south africans seing as they've been through a lot with the apartheid system mara they a the 1s doing the senseless n inconcidarete killings.why kill someone who is trying 2 earn a living to support their families(claiming that foreigners take their jods)a these people so stupid 2 da extent dat they expect companies to come to their homes and offer them jobs.

during da years of apartheid black south africans would go hide in neibouring african countries and i never heard of stories dat they were killed for occupying the land or for seeking jobs.

when we go to countries lyk america we want to be ecepted bt we are failling to except our neighbours ag....man sis.

i dnt understand how canthese people set a person alight and watch them burn then on sunday they go 2 church cause believe me these a mahlalela's who go 2 church on sundays.

im ashamed to call myself a BLACK SOUTH AFRICAN

@ REALIST
Try and educate those people in the informal settlement and see if they will comprehend what you are saying. How do you explain what you are saying to someone who is angry and hungry? Do you think they will care to listen? - no, but if this was common knowledge, then their reactions just might be a little different. my issue is that there is total ignorance. like maybe marching on a government whose policies are totally wack, and creating massive crime, unemployment and hunger.... not the next door zimbabwean neighbour who happens to own a tv and dvd that you want.

This thing of saying that other African counties helped SA during the apartheid era does not hold water for me. Those guys were refugees, they could not move freely in those countries. Their presence was well documented. Why did most of them return to SA? - fair and fine, but the fact is a lot of countries literally sacrificed for us, and people returned because they were coming back to a FREE  and DEMOCRATIC south africa, surely that's obvious?

sorry,  but you're not looking at the larger political involvement of almost every african state in south africa's fight for freedom.- anyway, even so, let's say NO ONE helped us during apartheid - does  it really justify this blatant and wanton bloodshed? does it, REALLY???, realist?  and what d'you say about the fact that shangaans and venda's are also being targetted - last i checked, they were as South African as you and I. this whole thing makes me sick sick sick.

@ Tox  - spot on, girl - as usual. we're so used to blaming the easy victim, we dont' take a step back to REALLY assess the situation. so we loot, we rape, we kill... sies man, it's ridiculous.

Just got this on email and had to share... Where is EXILE?

I might not be a South African
But I'm black, my skin is the same as yours
My colour is the same as yours
My genes are African, nothing but African

When your leaders were beaten by whites
I was there to shelter them
I was patient with them
I offered them food, shelter,
Most of all, I offered them protection

I might be a South African
I can't speak Zulu, cause I'm Vhenda
I can't speak Zulu, cause I'm Shangaan
I don't know what an elbow is in Zulu
As much as you don't know it in my language
Since when was Zulu the only South African language?

Yes...............I'm not from Gauteng
I was not born here, but I'm South African
Where should I go if you beat me
I'm not beating your father, mother, brother or sister who works at my area in the mines
I'm not calling them makwerekwere though they can't speak my language.

I might be dark in complexion
I might have the foreigners looks
I might have the foreigners body structure
Now I am scared to go to the only place that I call home

I'm scared of walking down the street without my ID
Whites wanted me to do that centuries ago
Now you, my black brother is acting white
Why should you Black South Africans do this?
What makes you think that you better than me?

Who told you that I'm responsible for your unemployment?
Who told you that I'm less human

If I need to go back to Vhenda........let all the Zulus go back to KZN
Let all the Tswana's go back to Botswana
Let all the Sotho's go back to Lesotho
Let all the Ndebele's go back to Kwandebele
Let all the Xhosa's go back to Eastern Cape
Yes............let all the Swati's go back to Swaziland

Is this not ignorance?
Your unemployment is your responsibility
Use your intellect
Get up and work
Let education empower you
Seek humanity

Before 1994 you blamed whites
Now you are blaming me
Who are you going to blame after chasing me away?
Who are you going to blame after killing me?

For what it's worth.......................
I'm sorry I was not born here
I'm sorry I can't speak Zulu
I'm sorry for being too dark for your Joburg
I'm sorry for cleaning the toilets you don't want to clean
I'm sorry for doing your garden
I'm sorry for repairing your shoes
I'm sorry for protecting your leaders while they were in Exile

Yes.....................what you call Exile...........is my country

And most of all.......I'm sorry for building South African infrastructure

Please my brothers let there be peace and prosperity amongst black African people.
