Religions Of South Africa
Premiere date: Tuesday, 15 July 2010 at 21h00

A new six-episode series which looks at the religious landscape in South Africa.

When the South African Constitution was adopted, the religious landscape in South Africa changed irrevocably. Religion and state were separated and it was no longer possible to grant a specific religion or denomination preferential treatment as was the case under the previous apartheid dispensation. All religions are now being treated as equal.

This changed the way in which many religious traditions are viewed and the way in which they function.

In the previous dispensation many religions were viewed as ‘primitive’ and less advanced - particularly traditional religions. Others were not recognized at all, or were seen as deviant forms of acceptable religions.

The new Constitution changed all of that and it gave many religious traditions a new lease on life and a freedom to explore not much that which makes religions different, but what they have in common.

The series introduces the religious landscape of South Africa and explores the origins of a variety of traditions. It also considers the role of religion in society as a whole.
