Top 20 Shows And Actors For 2009

It was a busy year for TVSA in 2009, as the site continued to grow.

Thousands of new actors and shows were added to our database this year, strengthening our position as the world's biggest provider of South African shows and actors, and one of the biggest for their international counterparts.

Although the heated debates, fights and laughter emanate primarily from the blogs, the information provided by TVSA's actor profiles and show pages is still one of the site's biggest drawcards.

We thought you might like to know which show pages and actor profiles were the most-visited this year - it gives a great perspective on their popularity.

Without further ado, these were the Top 20 most-visited show pages for 2009:

1. Generations (SABC1)
2. 7de Laan (SABC2)
3. Isidingo (SABC3)
4. Boer Soek 'n Vrou (kykNET)
5. Binnelanders (M-Net)
6. 3rd Degree (e.tv)
7. Special Assignment (SABC3)
8. Muvhango (SABC2)
9. Miss South Africa (SABC2)
10. Pasella (SABC2)

11. Jacob's Cross (M-Net Series, M-Net, SABC2)
12. Khumbul'ekhaya (SABC1)
13. Scandal! (e.tv)
14. Days of Our Lives (SABC3)
15. Zola 7 (SABC1)
16. Backstage (e.tv)
17. Big Brother Africa (DStv 198)
18. The Real Goboza (SABC1)
19. Egoli: Place of Gold (M-Net)
20. Erfsondes (SABC2)

Despite having well over a thousand international shows in our database, not one of them showed up in the Top 20. Proof that local is lekker - if you've got it.

These were the Top 20 most-visited actor profiles for 2009:

Connie Ferguson

1. Connie Ferguson
2. Trevor Noah
3. Sophie Ndaba
4. Shaun Arnolds
5. Bajabulile Masombuka
6. Patricia Lewis
7. Sonia Sedibe
8. Jeannie D
9. HHP
10. Bonang Matheba

11. Khanyisile Mbau
12. Az Abrahams
13. Harold van Buuren
14. Katlego Danke
15. Hlomla Dandala
16. CC Ravele
17. DJ Sbu
18. Emo Adams
19. Mmabatho Montsho
20. Lauren Graham

Once again South African actors and celebs are the top of the list, although Gilmore Girls star Lauren Graham just squeaked in, edging out Nicholis Louw. It's probably no coincidence that Generations was the top show while its biggest star - Connie Ferguson - topped the actor list.

Two of the actors in that list - Shaun Arnolds and Az Abrahams - passed away in 2009.

Any surprises? The stats don't lie.

Lol at Connie's pose in the above pic, i can just imagine what the camera man was saying to end up with that shot...hai.

Anyway, its crazy to see how Generations is such a big part of the South African household.

I'm also dissappointed that RC is not on the list, although I don't watch it much myself these days.

Any suprise? stats dont lie

well, that statement is misleading... no its a lie!!!

Having 1mil hits on a webpage does not mean 1mil ppl actually visited that webpage. Every time a person opens a page it's a hit. One person can visit that page numerous time. If a celeb checked his or her profile every day a number of times (for whatever reason eg check if fans have posted something) that would increase their page hits.

Of course one can not prove this either way without actually checking the ISPs of every hits BUT to say stats dont lie in this case is debatable if not totally false

makisto; I always say people deny to be watching and reading about Generations and I always tell them to stop lying about it. We can't help ourselves but watch Generubish

I dnt watch Generations except on occassions when someone is in my house and the watching it. U can measure Generations' popularity based on web hits (read post above)

I hv sometime opened the Generations' page to read the comments there esp when there is a heated debate abt a storyline like during the Jason/Senzo thing. Not everyone who visits a page is a fan. No doubt the show is popular and there is a very simple logic to that, NUMBERS

FACT: Most of SA's population live in rural areas. Most (emphasis on most.. not all) of its viewers couldnt care less if Generations was hogging storylines from other shows or reharshing them. Im not saying rural ppl r dumb. However, the world Generations offers them is the world they dont know so to them they couldnt know if its messing up!

Some time back so called analysts (more like SABC employees) tried to push the facts under the rug by saying that Generations still gets viewership on dstv even though critics said ppl watch it because their choices r limited. Their argument was that ppl with dstv have more tv channel choices but still watch Generations. What they neglected to say was the fact that majority of those dstv viewers came from other countries. Lets face it compared to what most of this countries have on their television Generations is heaven. As for SA viewers with DSTV who still watch, well SABC will never admit it but its a very small number

PS: By the way with DSTV compact u still dnt have that much choice whn it comes to variety of channels :)

... u cant measure.... (sorry abt tht)

BIllionare

@blaqueboi  on DSTV issue, even viewers with full bouquet still watch Generations, especially the youth....it's amazing how people always go back to SABC shows despite having DSTV.....

blaqueboi
05 Jan 2010 11:55

Billionaire, I was not disputing the fact that there are people with full bouquet dstv who still watch SABC. I watch Survivor, Special Assignment, Law & Order, Top Billing and occasionaly Home Affairs on SABC. My point was on Generations popularity. Even with dstv full bouquet  there r still ppl who r loyal viewers of Gen but I doubt the numbers are what Gen-fans would like us to believe

Yes the show is popular and its no.1 in the rating but that popularity can be grossly exagerated at time

Yeepy i made to the TOP 31!!!!!!!!!! Isn't Rythm City supposed to be at the TOP 20 and uphi uHome Affairs? Jammie Bartlet deserves to be in that Top 20, ha-a guyz ndinukuselwa ngumkhonyovu mna. Khanyi Mbaula naye  i don't believe this, Brenda Ngxoli also deserves to be in that TOP20.

MakaB
15 Feb 2010 12:13

i completely agree with you Blaqueboi, i think ppl watch Generations becoz that's what they are used to, i dont Have DSTV at ma flat, and i dont watch it, there are lots of things one can watch, SABC 3 always offers the best programmes, and when i go home, where we do have DSTV, we dont watch Generations, and there are teenagers and mom but they dont watch it, again they watch other programmes, but i say it depends on a person, but ke to say that it is the most watched, hai cha angvumi shame.
