Egoli Wraps Into A Movie

After 18-years on-air, the cast and crew of Egoli are in the process of wrapping filming on the show today (28 August).

The episodes being filmed are for the shows very last episodes ever.

The soapie, which first premiered on M-Net on 6 April 1992, was bumped from it's Prime slot of 18h00 to 18h30 earlier this year, when it was replaced with Binnelanders.

At the time of the decision to swap the two shows it was also announced that the soapie would keep running for one final year before retiring. The Finale episode will be broadcast on Wednesday 31 March, 2010 and will be episode number 4,689.

In between then and now, the never-say-die show will be working on a sequel to the series in the form of an Egoli movie - set for release at Nu Metro next year.

The movie will star series favourites and will serve as a catch-up of who's getting up to what and the current drama in their lives. In essence it will be a continuation of the series as a film.

Producers at Franz Marx films are hinting that it could be the first of more. No title has been confirmed for the film, nor release date - this will happen over the next couple of months.

Our take on it: with all the gold at the centre of the show and after 18-years we just don't understand why the cast and crew wouldn't rather want to go on an extended holiday - forever.

It's similar to what happened with Jennifer Aniston after Friends ended and she suddenly decided work herself to the bone in movies - why?

Filming on the movie starts next month.

Why on earth would they want to turn a SOAPIE into a movie? I really understand if M-Net Cancelled Egoli, and the movie was Franz Marx way of tying up the loose storylines and concluding it in a series finale event or something. But it's rather stupid to end a soap - and then to pick up on their lives again for the movie and then do what? Leave viewers hanging?

Also lets not talk about the limited viewership this movie could only appeal to - only the handful of M-Net subscribers who watched the soap, maybe even the die hard fans - I doubt any new viewers whove never watched Egoli will be heading to the theatres to watch the movie?

Anyways sad day for the minimal remaining Egoli cast members still with the show filming their final scenes - must be emotional!
