M-Net's proudly local channel Mzansi Magic will be producing a new music reality show called Clash of the Choirs South Africa, presented by the popular radio DJ, Social Media Queen B, Bonang Matheba. The series will bring ordinary people with a common passion for singing together and it all kick-starts with auditions in seven provinces from November 2012.
The format for Clash of the Choirs is a cut above the rest and is set to unleash new and exciting South African choral talent – sopranos, tenors and bass singers who can blend in harmony to make the best of the best choir.
Seven musical celebrities will travel to a designated province to audition up-and-coming amateur choirs. The successful choirs return to Johannesburg with their celebrity choir master to compete against other celebrity headed choirs in a nine week musical bonanza where R250 000 is up for grabs for the charity of their choice. Winner takes all!
A panel of three judges will monitor every note sung by the choirs in the running looking for the most polished and nurtured voices. Seven celebrity Choir Masters will coach the choirs and prepare them for their battle to secure a spot in the top 3 to go into the final spectacular live show - where South Africa votes for their favourite amateur choir.
“As Mzansi Magic, we are excited to introduce Clash of the Choirs South Africa. We felt that it was the right time to celebrate choral music given that this type of music is heavily rooted in SA culture,” says Director of Special Interest Channels Yolisa Phahle.
Clash of the Choirs South Africa follows up on the great success of Idols South Africa Season 8 which was a co-production between Mzansi Magic and M-Net.
“This is a bold step for Mzansi Magic and we would like to encourage people to make their way to the auditions. This particular format will allow viewers to experience great choral music with a twist. The show is guaranteed to be entertaining and packed with all elements of a great reality show”, adds Phahle.
