What should Mam' Yvonne do?

Mama Yvonne Chakachaka has a dilemma. The 26th December 2008 was the happiest day of her life, she received an email from an organisation in the US inviting her to the inauguration of Barack Obama on the 20th of this month. This was an unexpected invite and she was over the moon - i mean who wouldn't be? She has secured herself a ticket to the US (bought by FNB) and is ready to go.

Yesterday (08/01/09) Mama received an email from an organisation she has been doing charity work with in Africa (Rwanda, Ethiopia and another country), informing her that she is required to resume her work with them as of 18/01/09 until the 26th of the month. Mama had signed a contract with this organisation in October last year confirming that she’d continue working with them this year.

Now Mama (like anyone) wants to attend the inauguration of Obama but she has a contractual obligation to do work in Africa. In her interview this morning, she said, she’s happy, sad and angry all at the same time. She tried to negotiate with the African organisation to postpone the start of the project so she can attend the inauguration, don’t know if the organisation can do that.

She’s really in catch 22, what should she do?

the inauguration is only for a day.....so she must do the africa job....on the 20th fly to the white house....the next day fly back to Africa. i am sure they can survive without her for two days

No I don't think she should go and do the africa job, there will be plenty of charities around. Inauguration of Obama is part of history, I think she should put herself first just once. Or she could take 4 days off the cahrity event to attend.

Where did you hear this??

D why are you calling her Mama, she's not that old..... Eish Yvonne is a real celebrity and a star, getting an invite to Obama's party....... She can do both if all fails she must do the Africa event, after all she can always sing for Obama when he visits the country this year or next year....

Hai! Go thata!

I think she should take leave for 2 days for the Org - she mos must have leave days, or yang? then go to the Inaugaration - come back and sign another contract until the end of March or she

GIVE ME THE TICKETS TO OBAMA'S INAUGARATION!!! I'll represent!

Lekese
09 Jan 2009 09:56

It's a no brainer really! She has a contract and honoring it should be paramount. After all, with the inauguration she will simply be one of the many people seated a km away from the main event.

Unless of course she has a couple of mills to spare because if she does not honor the African obligation, the org could sue her pants off her!

GIVE ME THE TICKETS TO OBAMA'S INAUGARATION!!! I'll represent!...My exact sentiments
She should just work for the Charity Org and on the 20th, she should just be excused to listen to that 'Obama, Obama...' song all day...

She's the Princess of Africa and in line to being called the next Mama Africa. There really isn't much of a choice here. If she abandons her African obligations, she loses favour with the rest of Africa. Don't forget this is her target market-the people who buy her music.

America and OBAMA can and SHOULD wait.

Dimago
09 Jan 2009 10:04

The interviewer kept saying to her "do the right thing", which is obviously staying in Africa, but she could not commit to it. She kept saying she's in talks with her advisor about how she should handle things.

BigMama
09 Jan 2009 10:39

She must do what she thinks its best for her, Africa may be her motherland or home country but does not have to force her to work for it if she had already made plans for her day, month or year.

Obama is another African child who is just abroad, so l don´t see a problem if she can go there first and finish her project in Africa later, why must she cancel her plans because Africans buy her music, support her career and its her home.

Visiting Obama doesn´t mean that she has rejected or abandoned the African nation, the Obama thing (maybe) is just a once off. She still has a lot of time to work for Africa its not like its an emergency work she will be doing in Africa, she won´t adding breath to a dying person, so everything can wait.

So l think she must go to Obama and the Africans must understand her problem, its not like she will be gone for the whole year.

tshepiso
09 Jan 2009 10:43

I think Yvonne should delegate one of her subbordinates to act during her absence, and all the emergencies to be dealt with telephoniocally. She cant go to OBAMA, thAT IS A LIFE TIME OPPOTUNITY.

Lekese
09 Jan 2009 10:44

Somehow i don't think she would have this dilemma had the contract been with an organisation in England, for example.

she won´t adding breath to a dying person,

@ Bigmama,
that's what I meant. Africa has been having problems since kudala and they won't end anytime soon. She will keep on working for Africa until the day she dies. Obama is once in a lifetime and not verybody gets an invite especially if you 1000's of km's away. Ask Khanyi to fill her shoes since she doesn't have a job!!!

BigMama
09 Jan 2009 10:53

@cleve..........thats true, she must go to Obama, the first Black man to live in the White house she can add something to her cv and she has worked for many charities here in Africa.

@Dimago.........how will she know that we want her to go and visit Obama?

09 Jan 2009 10:54

IF it were a dilemma, she would have handled her internal affairs privately. She's just excited about the whole prospect of being invited to Obama's, hence she's making the emails that she's getting public.
Crises? There's no crises here. Don't crack your skulls, she already knew what she's gonna do before she even went for that interview, but pretended like she was in a dilemma. I'd do the same if i wanted the world to know

Obama is also from Africa right Kenya to be precise, so what's the big deal.

Yvonne just want the whole world to know that she's been invited to Obama's inauguration, seriously. Charity work will never end, so are Africa's problems.

No he is not, if you are born in South Africa you are regarded as a South African and same for all the other states.  I cant wait to see what this Barak Obama guy is going to do for Africa. (Wow.. got the name right this time).  As I was saying about this guy what is the fuss anyway? FIRST BLACK AMERICAN PRESIDENT. Do we undermine ourselves that much. Is this something that we feel we dont deserve or worth off? why cant we just add him on as another American president?

Maybe Im wrong about this , if I am forgive me...it just that when you start classifying yourself it gives an impression that you are not worth it

Amza.........FIRST BLACK AMERICAN PRESIDENT, l think that should answer you if you have light ngehistory yasemelika. Obama´s father is from Kenya, so that makes him an African. You can go to America now till forever but you will always be a African, so l am proud that today a black brother is sitting on a chair that was consider for whites only (although they never said it public, l assume thats what was in their minds). We are not undermining ourselves but we are proud of a brother achieving that much so if it means celebrating with him why not.
Today Martin Luther King´s dream about America has been achieved, with praise and l just guess he is happy where ever he is.

Pastor Benjamin Dube rocks, l am having a great time.
