Jaw Dropped By Izikhothane - Reloaded

First it was SABC1's Cutting Edge that zoomed into the controversial township trend known as Skhothanes. Now etv's 3rd Degree dissected the controversial Skothane trend...

3rd Degree on etv

Clearly this ridiculous trend of iziKhothane or Skothane's is huge, that's why it made a come back on etv's 3rd Degree.

This time the spotlight was in Katlehong, where the Skhothane groups called the Born Agains and Over Spenders were more that pleased to invite cameras to their bling lifestyle.

The Born Again members divulged the cost of their expensive clothes with:

A Belt costing around - R500
A Shirt - R500
A pair of Jeans - R1500
A pair of Shoes - R2700

One of the members mentioned that a complete outfit cost a total of between R8500 and R9000.

These boys believe that being iSikhothane makes you stand out amongst crowds and their status is confirmed when the spectators call into radio stations and shout them out on-air.

One arrogant but very silly Skhothane gloated that, " You gotta afford to be a Skhothane. If you can't afford then you can't be called a Skhothane." SMH

Once the Skhothane groups meet for a face off, things turn ugly. They exchange insults, disses and curses, all in the name of coming out as the top Skhothane. One even said the other Skhothane's clothes had faded and that they were probably "fong-kong" and he would buy him new clothes and even buy his mother.

Clearly, they needed to leave a lasting impression, so they kicked each other so their shoe soles on left "a stamp" of their expensive brands on their rivals' clothes. Some took off their clothes and trampled all over them to show that they are "rich."

The madness continued with the spilling of Ultramel custard on the ground, spashing expensive booze namely Johnny Walker Black and comparing gold teeth.

The saddest scene was when one Skhothane tore his parents' hard earned money in front of onlookers, mostly young kids who could use the money for food.

Of course they are not wealthy either. These Skhothane's come from struggling homes but they couldn't care less. As one of the Skhothanes, SK said "People hate us because Skhothane's live a stress free life, we just spend. It doesn't matter if the family is struggling, we are doing what we love and that's all that matters. Even the girls go crazy when they see us and scream 'SK! SK.' As long as we do what we love then it's not a problem."

SK's uncle agreed with the statement mentioned by his nephew. He said he was more than happy to spend on the nephew because they never had such opportunities during the apartheid era.

The Skhothane's made a synonymous declaration that their role models were the likes of Kenny Kunene, Khanyi Mbau and the bling politicians... They believe that educated people with degrees are not doing well because they struggle like everyone else, so why should they consider them as role models.

Unfortunately this bling life has its' consequences as one Gogo related the story of her grandson's suicide. She spoiled the grandson rotten after his father passed on. She bought him all the latest Nike sneakers, RMs for R2000 but unfortunately that wasn't enough for Thando who was part of the Skhothane group called the Psychos. Thando later hanged himself because the Skhothane's standards were just too high.

The Psychos group members believe this trend needs to come to an end because they can see how it's putting too much pressure on their parents and grandparents.

I can't emphasise enough the madness of this silly trend.

Where you watching? What are your thoughts on Skhothanes?

Cutting Edge on SABC1

"There's nothing much I can do with R2000. I just buy a pair of Carvellas which cost R1800, then the rest is used for taxi fare and maybe a pizza."

These are words from a "Skhothane", that doesn't even have a casual job.

It all went down on Cutting Edge on SABC1, where cameras followed the lives of what is known as "Izikhothane". To put it in a politically correct manner, "Skhothanes" are young boys with expensive taste, who trash their pricy gear (clothes, shoes, booze, etc) all in the name of showing off. Most Skhothanes are part of a group. These groups go head-to-head or rather label-to-label to showoff who's got more swag. More like, who's more dumb

KhanyiLangie_pic

The episode focused on these Skhotane's from a group called the 18 Boys and the other, Stressed what what, wearing designer labels with shoes ranging from R800 to R2500, and some boys having spent R5000 on a entire outfit from head to toe. Mind you, these are school-going teens.

Dressed in these expensive clothes, they are transported in "combis" better known as Quantams, to the once exquisite but now dodgy "park" called Little Falls.

En route to the venue they buy loads of expensive booze at a local bottle store. (Pause... None of those boys looked a day older than 18 years, how were they permitted to buy booze in abundance?) The rival groups kicked off the competition by hurling insults at each other about how much money they have.

Simply Palesa

Once they get to the venue, where many Skhothane groups have assembled, it becomes a jamboree as various Skhothane's show off their expensive garments, some still had price tags to prove that they are genuine. Amen. One was even talking about signing cheques and said he left his cheque book at home. Like really, can he even spell CHEQUE?

You'd assume with all the money spent this would be a glam affair. It couldn't be further from glam. The rival groups pour and spit booze on each other, clearly wasting it. They also take off their tops and dump them on the muddy ground "to show just how rich they are."

Although it was not screened, these boys throw costly foods like pizza, meat and Ultramel custard at each other, much to the delight of all in attendance. *SMH*

Lady Teekay pic

This wasteful behaviour has become a norm in many neighbourhoods in the townships, particularly Soweto. The saddest and craziest thing is that these kids are not from well-off families. One mother (a single parent by the looks of it) mentioned that she's unemployed but the boy's father was providing money for the "Skhothane gear."

She seemed intoxicated as she kept on contracting herself, saying she pays for her son's expensive clothes because he does well in school, then immediately saying she can't afford to pay for those clothes and she doesn't care how the boy gets the money because she's prepared to bury him whatever happens to him. Those are a mother's words ne! Tjo!

Kenny Sushiking, the King of showing off, advised the boys to know theirs and their parents limitations and shouldn't be influenced by friends. He mentioned that wearing expensive labels is a Darkie thing, as it dates back to the Sophiatown days.

KhanyiMbali_1

All I can say is that the Skhothane's are dripping with IGNORANT swagg. These boys spend R25 000 a year on clothes alone whilst reading books such as Benny and Betty Lost and Found. How much are they contributing to a University fund?

Sure enough, If these boys are not big on education and would rather focus on looking good, then they should have ensured their homes looked just as good first. They even hinted that they'd do crime to keep up this rubbish trend. Sies!

As much as we can be hard on these boys, they are afterall just that - Boys. I blame the parents more for condoning such behaviour.

Chatlas pic

Now, for that moment of **death**. Some of the gibberish coming out of those boys mouths:

*One silly Skhothane said:
"You don't even have money because your mom works at Caltex and she doesn't pay tax.'

*From the Stress what what group:
"We Are Stress Providers..We Provide Stress to a Night Dress Cause we Dress to Impress the Mistresses"

*The Skhothane from Little Falls
"Bebethi ngi useless kodwa awuboni ngifake u"U" weSiliva ezinyweni no "full" weGolide bang'biza ngo UseFull"

DEAD...

Those boys need a prayer, a very serious one. The devil is at work there ka nnete, after matric they will be sitting at home doing nothing with no money to further their education and that's if they finish school.

When I grow up I'also going to be  a S'khotane.LOL, seriously though those kinds are wasteful, hey!

I can't believe they are actually proud of themselves, and the mother condoning such Bull S*#@ behavour, unbelieveable.

I actually feel sorry for that boy, because in essence that kind does not have a parent, no one to guide him.One day he will blame his mother for allowing him to act like that and show him the right way of doing things. i wounder if that family has a education policy or some saving for the kid to further his education, I doubt it.

I am more worried by their taste in clothes.
Very poor taste.
maybe it is the pics or something, the clothes look fake.
On a more serious note, the dysfunctionality of the family system in our country is at the root of most of our problems.
Until this is addressed, we remain doomed.

I hate those colours, No taste at all. They look very cheap, will never go out with someone that looks like a butterfly. Parents please put money aside for your kids education and not on expensive clothes and alcohol. She said "ba ya phasa shame" - A pass to the poor woman is maybe 40 or 50%. These kids will not make it in the future most of them will spend most of their life in jail. Already you can see its like they are always on drugs.

Living in a not well furnished 4 room house and spending so much money on nothing, really please Soweto wakeup. I felt so low. What are we saying to other nations?? That we can be paid little because we don't know how to use money??

Where did these producers get the word "skhothane" which literary means "lick each other"....As a zulu speaker I know thugs/gangsters mostly who dont go to school, and back then they never used to bath coz they would hide from the communities, they were called "oSKHOTHENI", which literary means "the one who lives/stays in the bushes", ...now without trying to be a purist,  I DO get annoyed especialy by Joburg folks -turning the Zulu language into something else..I can understand a few slang here and there but this word could have easily been researched.....neeways interesting show....

I watched the show it was entertaining and shocking at the same time. Seeing how those kids behave and the way they were bragging about their apparently expensive clothes that are so ugly and look cheap was shocking. And the mother of that took the cake. She kept on contradicting herself saying she's not working then again daying she has to provide for her son so she buys whatever he wants my question is with what if she's not working? Hayi saka siskhothane naye loya mama. And the way she was bragging about that carvella hayi! She has a strong phuza face too........................................................................................ And her son even said he does not feel sorry for coz she has to provide for him whatever je wants. She has to make him happy. Those boys don't even think about their backgrounds and all that. All they care about is the expensive clothes that they must wear to show to others. I don't know abantu base kasie like pretending and being seen like they're rich really........................................................................ And the spitting of beer on each other was just plain disgusting. They never said anything about where they got that much money they were carrying around saying spend about R4000 on alcohol. I don't think those boys even go to school................................................ About the the clothes why floral clothes though? Are those supposed to be expensive? Really? Hayi shem a guy who bought his clothes at Mr Price would look like he wore expensive clothes than them................................ I just hope now that the thing has been shown on TV it doesn't spread to other cities/townships coz you never know it might soon be a national thing, this thing yezi Khothane.

I had the honour (or rather disgust) of watching this show. I picked up the phone and sent a text to my mom thanking her for ensuring we had the best! What pains me is that these are the kids that probably will end up in a life of crime trying to lead this glamourous lifestyle. As for the floral shirts! I had no idea SALES HOUSE was still operating. ?? What's sad is that's the image many ppl will have of the "township life" dumb wasteful kids. As for Kenny kunenes comment on white ppl buying from pep....... I'm all for designer gear but if it means living beyond ur means no thanks. I'd rather wear an Ackermans top while driving my BMW to my house in Fourways. Its this sense of entitlement that these boys had, "kids in the suburb do this so can we" I grew up in the (affluent) suburbs of Johannesburg and can guarantee that this aint the case....if anything they watched this episode saying "look at those baboons"

This is all guilt parenting. Parents buy small children expensive shoes, if you thought wearing Spitz was a status wait till you see a Primary School learner wearing a carvella. I asked one child who looked no older than 10 years who cut out a picture of a carvella from a magazine what he was doing with it and he told me he wanted his mother to buy it for him, Okay. His friend contested that, "but you've already got one similar to this one", I was shocked. I asked him about his performance at school to which he replied that he does very well. Maybe according to his standards he does but I do not believe it. someone once told me that she did well in Afrikaans in matric when she got an "F" on that subject, so that's someone else standard and who am I to judge. These children go to no fee schools and their parents fail to buy them uniforms. There's kids in those schools who are poor during the week and poor during weekends as well but these so called "rich ones" are glamorous on weekends. I put the large part of the blame on parents who teach their children skewed prioritization.

To say that i was shocked is an understatement.  I was lost for words.  I blame poverty mentality and lack of recreation.  Success does not equate to materialistic things.  My then 2 year old son was in a pre-dominately black creche and he would come crying for Ben 10, Spider Man and all those labels.  I don't buy labels and i saw how much pressure he was in to fit in.  I took him out to a pre-dominately Afrkiaans creche and there is peace at home.

Black people we are doomed. As long as such behaviour gets the thumbs-up from our youth, we are not really going anywhere. I totally blame the parents for this because they are supporting the habit. The arguement is that if they do it then the kid will steal or will kill themselves, yet if you do it then you kill your own child mentally. I am not that old, I am only 25, but at home I knew gore what my mom and gogo says, goes! Since when did the kid call the shots at home? This competition amongst ourselves is sooooooo stupid, and the parents are the main source for all of this, if your child comes home crying because everyone has a timberland and he doesnt, tell him gore "ga alle madi, o lla metsi". Just to show how narrow-minded these kids are, you come out of an RDP house with no gate and 20 year old furniture handed down to your parents, but you are wearing R5000 on you???? bokae botlhale moo? The parents should be ashamed for what they are doing, killing their own cildren's future by empowering them with nonsense! mxm

Eish if one could zoom in into the surburbs we would laso be shocked to find a person driving the latest Beemer with no food in the cupboard or ephila nge overdraft just so people can see what he is driving, asking for loans in order to pay for their kids school fees. worse ke when they ask for petrol money. sisaya kude mzi ontsundu.

Love what you said @boredhousewife. We hate ourselves as Black people and we always put a blame of misbehaving on Blackness. It's all about the values we instill in the kids. Mina I don't want to lie, I mingle with a lot of them down there e loction. I speak to them telling them how important education is. If I give them something they must take with both hands. I'm so strict like that. They may be not my kids, most of them call me sister (in Afrikaans), I simply want the best for them. I encourage them to look for work, finish school and to change their life styles if needs be. They change their attitudes and I have a feeling that if we treat them as kids that they are and show them direction instead of always pointing out that if it's done in a white way it would be right, we can all make a difference. I don't beat about the bush but I tell them directly if I don't like the way they talk to me and I assure you they back down something they won't do in their own homes.

We Provide Stress to a Night Dress Cause we Dress to Impress the Mistresses"

Didn't see that one last time ... Still wiping me tears from me eyes, ROFLMAO !!
Yah .. self love & appreciation is very remote for some of our dark skinned kin !
Some people .....
Cannot be saved from themselves ...
It take will that is beyond these particular people's ability

some causes, cannot be one, only natural attrition will sort this dilemma

This is a sad affair indeed on many levels. (1) These kids are the future of this country. In the next 10-20 years we will still be needing Doctors, Nurses, Teachers, Engineers, Accountants and even Politicians. I bet you none of those kids will ever get there. So where will they come from? Again, we will be forced to import from Southern Africa and Cuba. Who are the first people to complain that they are unemployed? The very same people who could not be bothered with their own future and the future of this county.

(2) To the working, middle and upper classes out there, you should be afraid. These are the same people who easily fall in to the life of crime. Trying to do whatever it takes to make their living and sustail their so called "lavish" lifestyle. And, they are coming for what you have. Your car, you Rolex watch, your houshold items, etc. And when they are done and arrested, you will still feed them and clothe them through the taxes you pay to the government.

So, instead of us all sitting on the fence and pointing fingers, twitting and blogging about their silly ways, we must think of a solution. For they are not going down alone they are taking all of us (or at list our next genetaion) with them.

These children are not our future.

They have no future.

Thixo ngicel' ungisize
ungangithathi ngisese mncinci
yho kumnand' ukuphila (Thebe)

Ja fiddling while Rome is burning. These may not be your kids but the fact remains THEY ARE KIDS. (Full stop)

Hey lady, you lady, cursing at your life
You’re a discontented mother and a regimented wife
I’ve no doubt you dream about the things you’ll never do
But I wish someone ever talked to me like I wanna talk to you

I’ve been to Georgia and California and anywhere I could run
I took the hand of a preacher man and we made love in the sun
But I ran out of places and friendly faces because I had to be free
Though I’ve been to paradise but I’ve never been to me (Randy Crawford)

We are busy complaining about Khanyi Mbau and Kenny Kunene exacerbating this phenomenon but we fail to look within. How noble of us.

As I turned up the collar on
A favorite winter coat
This wind is blowin' my mind
I see the kids in the street
With not enough to eat
Who am I to be blind
Pretending not to see their needs

A summer's disregard
A broken bottle top
And a one man's soul
They follow each other
On the wind ya' know
'Cause they got nowhere to go
That's why I want you to know

I'm starting with the man in the mirror
I'm asking him to change his ways
And no message could have been any clearer
If you wanna make the world a better place
Take a look at yourself and then make a change, yey
Na na na, na na na, na na na na oh ho (Michael Jackson)

In such dire situations where do these kids go. Will they die, not all. Will I sleep at night and say I've done enough because me and mine is almost safe and content? I don't think so tin man.

There are locks on the doors
And chains stretched across all the entries to the inside
There's a gate and a fence
And bars to protect from only God knows what lurks outside
Who stole your heart left you with a space
That no one and nothing can fill
Who stole your heart who took it away
Knowing that without it you can't live
Who took away the part so essential to the whole
Left you a hollow bodySkin and bone
What robber what thief who stole your heart and the key
Who stole your heart
The smile from your face
The innocence the light from your eyes
Who stole your heart or did you give it away
And if so then when and why
Who took away the part so essential to the whole
Left you a hollow bodySkin and boneWhat robber what thief
Who stole your heart and the key
Now all sentiment is goneNow you have no trust in no one (Tracy Chapman)

Go to your old age knowing you've stoped someone unknowingly that particular day they spoke to you and you inspired them. Know you bought a child a reading book for the first time in his or her life. Know you've assisted a star to reach it's own dreams. Know you've done as much as you could. Know that when one child gets arrested or dies violently, you've saved one which was not biologically yours. Know that the more their future gets bleak, You were part of the people that failed them.

At this point in my life
I've done so many things wrong I don't know if I can do right
If you put your trust in me I hope I won't let you down
If you give me a chance I'll try

You see it's been a hard road the road I'm traveling on
And if I take your hand I might lead you down the path to ruin
I've had a hard life I'm just saying it so you'll understand
That right now, right now, I'm doing the best I can
At this point in my life (Tracy Chapman)

If you went through all this, Thank You for singing along with me.

Fools of these days

I dont blame this children at all n certainly not their parents. Whatever U saw U'll reap someday. Parents caused this n now we blame the kids? What do U expect when U give a child 2much money n2 less responsibility? Did they give this kids financial lectures b4 oveloading them with money?

R they there 2 advice their kids or go shopping with them? Do they empower their kids how 2 deal with peer pressure? Absolutely NO.

Leave this kids alone. Kenny Kunene is their role model n no 1 blames him 4 the way he lives his life. If he can advertise his life style on TV, so can this kids.
